On any given Saturday

Tinker Town: "The parity in college football is much greater than it has ever been in college football. On any given Saturday one team can beat the other. Remember Appalachian State shocking 2007 victory over the high and mighty Michigan maize and blue, in the Big house?"

The most amazing thing was Appalachian State did it with 27 players. Twenty-two starters. Five backups. A few more on special teams. But essentially, that's all it took to beat Michigan almost five years ago.
Twenty-seven players.
What, you've forgotten? Big House, big shock, biggest upset ever. Sept. 1, 2007 came and went, depositing a layer of hope and shame and embarrassment and change. The top-heavy college game that grudgingly allows Cinderellas, chewed up and spat out Goliath that day, lovingly embracing the Mountaineers. In 2003, the Michigan Wolverines – then BCS National Championship contenders – fell at Autzen Stadium, ending their title dreams. Four years later, the location was different but the script remained the same.
As in Eugene, Michigan was led by a high powered trio on offense with Heisman-contender Mike Hart at the forefront. The Wolverines started the year ranked number five in the country – the same position they held in 2003 – but tumbled from the polls after a shocking loss to Division II foe Appalachian State. Oregon came into the Big House (Michigan’s football stadium) with a solid returning core of players but unsure of how good they really were, but there was no doubt about the talented Ducks after handing the Wolverines a 39-7 dusting – their worst loss since 1968.
Michigan took an early 7-3 lead on their only scoring drive of the day, but the Ducks responded quickly as quarterback Dennis Dixon hooked up with Brian Paysinger for 85 of his 292 yards through the air. Unbeknownst to the crowd in Ann Arbor, Oregon was just getting started.See video and read more...http://dailyemerald.com/2012/08/20/video-defining-moments-in-oregon-football-history12-2007-michigan-game/

How Saban Turned the Tide

The Alabama Coach's Meticulous Recruiting Process Has Spawned an All-Powerful Program

By RACHEL BACHMAN and BEN COHEN

Getty Images The allure of Alabama isn't just Southern charm. It's that Nick Saban has mastered the art of preparing players for the NFL.
With all due respect to the 123 other schools that play major-college football, the sport's foreseeable future boils down to one question: Can anyone stop Alabama?
The Alabama Crimson Tide, college football's defending national champion, has become the game's "it" team, an all-powerful and impervious Death Star of a program. Alabama has won two of the last three national titles. Its coach, Nick Saban, won another one while he was at Louisiana State—meaning he has won the title in three of the past seven college seasons he has coached. Without electric power the world as we have been living it is empty of the action we live in with people talking to each other online, and in the modern media. I felt like I slipped back into another time and place. underwater, dated and lost in time, struggling to breathe again. Wow without electric power I felt almost dead. A world where football is not so important.

Wow! Why is ther few peopl posting i the SEC? I really do missed the Big 12 people postingthere. A lot more people get involve in the conference than in the SEC. I am not sure why? Maybe people just o nt like talking in the SEC blog?

It's a Friday night showcase between one of the Big Ten's favorites and the program that has made a habit of playing giant-killer in openers. All Josh Nunes has to do is replace Andrew Luck. No pressure, right? After back-to-back appearances in BCS bowl games, the Cardinal begin life anew without Luck. But running back Stepfan Taylor is a back-to-back 1,000-yard rusher and the front seven are solid on defense. San Jose State is excited about its own new quarterback, juco transfer David Fales.

It’s finally here.

After a long, hot, dry summer with lots of talk, a few noteworthy suspensions and the official welcome of two new members, the 2012 college football season kickoff is just days away.

Fans can’t wait, especially those in the SEC. The conference has five of the top-10 teams in nation, according to the Associated Press preseason Top 25 poll, before the first points of the year have been scored. And while that makes for an awfully big target on the uniforms of every SEC team, those players, coaches and fans from outside the league look forward to the 2012 season the same way they’ve anticipated the last six falls: with a high sense of anxiety.

The countdown to kickoff might as well be the clicking of a rollercoaster chain -- for some, it will be a thrill; for others, it’s going to be a long and scary ride.

But the benchmarks are different in the SEC -- playing for the national championship is an expected rite of passage.Read more...

Player of the Week
Three Best Games of the Week

The SEC might want a four-team playoff system to be put in place as soon as possible, and for the legitimacy of college football, a playoff needs to be put in place immediately.

The best part of winning six straight national championships is that no one is going to take the BCS championship seriously if there isn’t an SEC team playing in it. The problem, though, is that it might be asking for the impossible without a little luck.

Even if two superpower of superpower programs like, say, USC and Texas go unbeaten, will anyone buy that the winner between the two in Miami is the true national champion if a 12-1 LSU or Alabama rolls in the Sugar Bowl? Of course, the SEC’s hope is that this will all be a moot point soon if a playoff plan is in place, but for now it might need to hope there aren’t two un
beaten BCS teams at the end of the season. Read more...http://cfn.scout.com/2/557658.html

SEC offensive power rankings

Jon @JonSDS

The SEC is known for being a ground-based, power running conference that approaches every game with the intention of punishing the opponent’s defense and boasts the ability to wear the opponents down in the fourth quarter.
As we look into the crystal ball, these offensive power rankings are not merely based on last year’s stats but more of an overall projection of how teams will fare this season. You never know what Missouri and Texas A&M will look like, as both return some playmakers on offense, but questions abound regarding how they will fare coming from a totally different conference. It should be fun to watch the season unfold.

LSU cancels practice due to storm

Updated: August 29, 2012, 12:54 PM ET
By Gary Laney | ESPN GeauxTigerNation

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Until Wednesday, the threat of Hurricane Isaac had done little to disrupt LSU's game preparation for Saturday's season opener against North Texas.
That changed Wednesday as Miles canceled practice, saying his team would "hunker down" in facilities around LSU's campus.

"We recognize the fact that we are going to miss Wednesday's practice and have to try to do what we would normally do today on Thursday," Miles said.
While practice was canceled, there was still no change in plans for Saturday's game, set to start at 6 p.m. ET. Miles, who spoke from LSU's football operations building during the SEC teleconference, said the storm would have to pass before an assessment was made. The worst of Isaac had yet to reach Baton Rouge when Miles was on the call Wednesday morning. 7:15 P.M. Update: Took another walk over to the stadium to find all the construction has about wrapped up! All that is left to do is put up the National Championship commemorative plaques and some other stuff.

For those of you who were worrying earlier about being able to view the player information plaques on the bottom row, I promise you can read them standing up.

Just like this morning, I downsized the pictures because they are very large. To view full resolution images, just click this link!

A tropical storm is not a hurricane, so far this Isaac storm has struggled to become a hurricane. Still after roaming into the Gulf of Mexico it is only a tropical storm. So until that changes, I now feel like that Isaac will stay the way it is. What we see is what we get.

LSU’s Michael Ford, Tahj Jones face academic appeals

Academic issues could keep Ford, Jones out of opener

With clouds from Tropical Storm Isaac on the horizon Monday, academic issues are clouding the playing prospects for two of LSU’s top players.

Amid storm, lineup changes, No. 3 LSU gets ready

By BRETT MARTEL (AP Sports Writer) | The Associated Press

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Les Miles had hoped LSU could have a drama-free August this season.
It hasn't quite worked out that way, but the No. 3 Tigers expressed confidence on Monday that a season full of promise would not be derailed by the loss of their biggest star, the looming possibility of a couple other key players being sidelined by academic issues, or even the potential disruptions that could result from a major storm.
''The good news is we've been through this before,'' Miles said when asked about how Tropical Storm Isaac might affect preparations for Saturday night's season opener against North Texas in Tiger Stadium. ''We know how to do this. We'll figure it out.''
Miles was referring to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which coincidentally postponed a game with North Texas, and Hurricane Gustav in 2008, which also resulted in a postponement.
After reading the rest of this column, http://sports.yahoo.com/news/amid-storm-lineup-changes-no-214155408--ncaaf.html, you will see the rap up by saying quote...
"Then there's new starting quarterback Zach Mettenberger, who coaches say is an exceptional passer that will spread opposing defenses out more than last season.
''We'll throw the football more efficiently, and maybe with some bigger plays,'' Miles said.
Mettenberger joked that this week would probably feel like the longest week of his life because of the anticipation that has been building in him since he transferred to LSU from junior college before last season.
Mettenberger, a former Georgia recruit who left the Bulldogs as a redshirt freshman because of legal trouble stemming from an incident with a woman at a bar, is now entering his fourth season of college football. As much as any Tigers player, he can identify with the idea that the onset of the regular season brings with it a chance to start a new chapter defined by success.
''Everyone's really excited to get the season started and kind of put the past behind us,'' he said.
As of Monday night, the North Texas game was still on for Saturday night, though Athletic Director Joe Alleva said that could change after the storm has passed."
