The republicans Tweedledee, to the democrats Tweedledum?

Tinker:

Can the American citizens trust
House Speaker John A. Boehner not to give illegal border crossing people into the United States amnesty, "American citizenship."

Making legal border crossing for honest people nothing more but a fools trip, and disrespecting the written laws of the United States government.

Is John Boehner the republicans Tweedledee, to the democrats Tweedledum?

Conservatives Fear 'Conference' May Transform House Immigration Bills to Senate's Amnesty

While House Speaker John Boehner is keeping a tight lid on his personal position on immigration reform, conservative activists and lawmakers fear the Republican leader may rubber-stamp Democrats' controversial legislation in a backroom deal with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Boehner declined to answer whether he supports what many on the left have come to term a “pathway to citizenship” for illegal immigrants during his appearance on CBS News’ Face The Nation on Sunday morning. For conservative lawmakers, that does not assuage fears that he and his deputies House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, Whip Kevin McCarthy, and Budget Committee chairman Rep. Paul Ryan could be working behind the scenes cut a deal with Reid and President Barack Obama to achieve amnesty for illegal immigrants in America.

“We are scared to death of what we figure is already Boehner’s end game,” a senior congressional GOP aide told Breitbart News. “There are so many forces within the GOP establishment pushing for their interests that it’s hard to conceive that Boehner will not cave to them.”

Boehner could “conference” any bill or group of bills the House passes related to immigration with the Senate's controversial immigration bill. In conference, representatives for House GOP leadership would negotiate with Senate Democratic leadership, and potentially the White House, on what they would call a “compromise” on immigration reform.

Conservatives do not trust Boehner and his team to stand up to Senate Democrats in conference, so they are advocating the House refuse to pass any legislation for fear it could be molded into a “compromise” that looks just like or is identical language to the Senate bill.

Many conservatives fear that such a compromise would only get a short amount of time for actual review, and votes would be whipped up and sold using talking points just like how the Senate bill passed. They point to comments from Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN), whose amendment with Sen. John Hoeven (R-ND) made a series of massive changes to the bill, where he argued that it is acceptable for senators to work with because they “will have more than 72 hours to read and review the proposal before any votes.”

Big 12 football coaches meet media in Dallas

TCU head football coach Gary Patterson meets with members of the media during Big 12 media days in Dallas. Patterson was among five coaches to appear Monday.

DALLAS – There aren’t too many places where you can find a horned frog, a bear, a mountaineer and a wildcat with human arms.

All of these creatures and several more were on hand Monday morning at the Omni Hotel in downtown Dallas for the first day of Big 12 Football Media Days.

The league’s 10 members: TCU, Texas Tech, Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Kansas State, Baylor, West Virginia and Iowa State, are taking over one of the biggest hotels in Dallas this week as they prepare for the 2013 football season.

TCU, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Kansas and Texas Tech were on hand Monday’s first day. The other five schools’ media sessions will be Tuesday.

The media members voted Oklahoma State as this year’s favorite to win the conference. It is the first time the Cowboys have been picked to win the conference and it’s also the first time in 15 years that Oklahoma nor Texas were picked to win.

“I think it’s a tribute to the players that have been before this group, the young men that are on our team now, and the ones in the future. They’ve got a lot to look forward to,” Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said about his team’s predicted first place finish. “I know that it won’t have any effect on our season, but I do think it means a lot to Oklahoma State that people feel comfortable in saying that we’re good enough to have the opportunity to win a conference championship.”

Kansas State won the Big 12 last season, but is only picked to finish sixth this season after graduating its quarterback and seven defensive starters. But this is a familiar position because the Wildcats were picked to be sixth last year before winning 11 games.

I think I said last year that, if I were given the opportunity, I would have picked us 99th,” Kansas State coach Bill Snyder said. “As I look at it this year right now where we stand, I’d probably echo the same thought. Our program is no different than any other in that the dynamics of the program change year in and year out regardless of how many you do or do not have returning.”

TCU is preparing for its second season in the Big 12 and is picked to finish third in the conference. The Horned Frogs did receive the second-most number of first place votes, nine.

The Horned Frogs were successful in 2012 despite playing 16 true freshmen and TCU had the best defense in the typically-offensive dominated Big 12.

“Whether it’s at TCU or anywhere else, you can score points, but you’ve  got to be able to play defense,” TCU head coach Gary Patterson said. “So all of us as a league, we’ve got to learn how we keep making ourselves better to do that. There’s a couple of ways, scheme‑wise, and keep recruiting better players.  The better players we have, the better we’ll be able to do that.”

Texas Tech turned heads this offseason by hiring alum Kliff Kingsbury as its new head coach. Kingsbury was the starting quarterback for the Red Raiders from 2000-2002.

“The heights coach (Mike) Leach took that program when I played there, is hard to repeat. That’s something that had never been done out there,” Kingsbury said. “But we’re excited about our group.  Last year they were 8‑5 and definitely have lots of room for improvement. It’s not like we’re coming to a program that’s broken. We’re just coming in trying to put our spin on it.”

Tech is picked to finish seventh in the 10-team conference.

Kansas didn’t win a conference game last year and is picked to finish last in the Big 12 again this year.

Texas Tech and TCU face off Sept. 12 in Lubbock at 6 p.m. on ESPN.

Dandy Don's LSU Sports Report

I hope all of you had a safe and enjoyable weekend. My family and I arrived safely in SanDestin yesterday afternoon and are having a great time.

Today will be a big media day for the Tigers as Coach Les Miles will make his way through the ESPN “carwash.” Miles will spend close to five hours at the ESPN studios in Bristol, CT appearing on a variety of shows. This has become part of the summer routine for Coach Miles and something that brings great exposure to both LSU and the SEC. Miles will get his day started on the ESPN campus at 10 a.m. CT with an appearance on GameDay Radio followed by a live hit on SportsCenter at 10:20 a.m. He will then appear on First Take with Skip Bayless and Steven A. Smith at 10:40 a.m. You can follow Miles’ journey throughout the day on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and ESPN3. You can also follow some behind the scenes footage of Miles via Twitter by following @LSUBonnette and @LSUfball.

With football season quickly approaching, today we’ll begin breaking down the 2013 LSU football team, unit by unit, starting with the offensive line. What may have been lost in the hoopla of Cam Cameron being hired is that Greg Strudrawa returns to coaching the offensive line full time. Strudrawa has been a fixture on Les Miles’ staff at LSU and spent the last two seasons as offensive coordinator kind of out of necessity. Miles relied on Strudrawa to play a dual role after Steve Kragthorpe was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease before the start of the 2011 season. While Strudrawa has gotten plenty of criticism at times, it should not be forgotten that he is a quality coach and obviously someone that Les Miles has a great deal of confidence in. I look for Strudrawa to use the last two seasons as offensive coordinator to his advantage and have the Tiger offensive line setting the tone for the new Cam Cameron offense this season.

The LSU offensive line brings back a nice core group of veterans and should be one of the more athletic groups we’ve seen at LSU in some time. The biggest change this season will be the move of junior La’El Collins from left guard to the starting left tackle spot. Collins was one of the most highly recruited left tackle prospects in the country coming out of Redemptorist High School in 2011. He has spent all of his time at LSU at the left guard position, but many (including me) are excited to see his athleticism protecting the blind side of Zach Mettenberger. While it may be his first season as a starter at tackle, his experience as a starter last year and his experience at LT in the past should make for a seamless transition.

The only other position on the line that I see as a lock right now is Trai Turner (So.) at right guard. Turner was an absolute stud last year when he came in and assumed the starting position from Josh Williford during the Florida game. Not only is he a powerful force in the running game, he also plays pass protection very well. Turner is a smart player that Miles has complimented in the past as someone that rarely misses an assignment. I expect a possible All-SEC season from the big guard from St. Augustine High.

How the rest of Tiger offensive line shakes out should make for some interesting position battles and possible movement of starters from last year. Vadal Alexander returns at right tackle after playing well last year as a true freshman. In the Chick-Fil-A bowl loss to Clemson, Alexander was not at 100% health and had difficulty protecting the edge, and that performance leaves some fans concerned whether he’s got the feet and quickness to be the best option on the right side. I think he does, although I’ve heard nothing but great things about redshirt freshman Jerald Hawkins from West St. Mary who will give him a run for his money. Hawkins is leaner and more athletic than Alexander and has the prototypical long arms that you like to have in a tackle. If Hawkins were to win that spot in the fall, we could see a battle between Alexander and Josh Williford for the starting left guard spot. This will be one to keep an eye on when fall camp opens.

The departure of P.J. Lonergan at center opens up another spot on the line, and yet another potential battle to focus on before the Tigers take the field against TCU. Elliot Porter (Jr.) is the heir apparent and current starter at this point, but true freshman Ethan Pocic may have something to say about that. Pocic was one of the biggest signees last year for LSU, and the big lineman out of Illinois enrolled early and was a part of the team during the spring. Pocic is probably better suited for the outside, but his ability may not allow for the coaching staff to keep him off the field. I’ve heard nothing but great things about Pocic since he has been here, and you could see a situation similar to La’El Collins where the staff will put the best five on the field even if it means everybody may not be at their presupposed position.

With 40 days remaining until LSU’s season opener against TCU, today we’ll continue our jersey countdown by looking at a special player who wore No. 40 – J.W. Brodnax. Brodnax, or “Red,” as he was commonly known, was a tremendous athlete who lettered at LSU from 1956-58 and was MVP of the Tigers’ 1958 National Championship Team. He played his high school ball at Bastrop High where he was an outstanding all-around athlete who made All-State as a running back in football and as a pitcher in baseball. He was also a member of the state championship mile relay track team. Brodnax arrived at LSU as a fullback, but was moved to the less glamorous fullback position in his sophomore year because Coach Paul Dietzel also had Billy Cannon and Johnny Robinson and wanted to utilize all three backs in the Wing-T formation. Red turned out to be a great fullback and his outstanding blocking was a significant factor in the success of Cannon and Robinson. After his days at LSU, Red went on to play professional football for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Denver Broncos, and in the Canadian Football League. Tragically, Brodnax was fatally struck by a van while riding his bicycle in Morgan City in March of 2006. Here's a great photo from LIFE magazine's series on LSU's 1958 team that I came across online when researching Brodnax.

Speaking of former Tigers, congratulations are in order for Barkevious “KeKe” Mingo, who was drafted 6th overall by the Cleveland Browns and has now signed his first professional contract. Mingo signed a four-year $16m contract with a signing bonus reportedly in the $10m range. I’m pulling for the West Monroe star to make an immediate impact in Cleveland.

In recruiting news of note, WR D’haquille Williams has verbally committed to the Auburn Tigers. Williams is one of the most electrifying players in the country, but off the field issues for the former East St. John standout has provided quite a recruiting journey that has seen him make his way around the JUCO ranks the last few years. Williams initially committed to LSU back in June, but decommitted soon after. Williams is one to continue to keep an eye on up until Signing Day, but the potential crop of wide receivers heading to Baton Rouge does not make this a huge loss. Likely a one and done player, Williams should see immediate playing time wherever he ends up. As of now, that place is Auburn.
