USC tumbles, Stanford rises in AP poll and East: It’s hard to gauge LSU Tigers

Tinker Town: "The TV news media, with the help of the AP sports writers, are simply using manipulation to make the AP  top 10 college football polls for greater TV viewing, and not for who is the real best college football team. The same scenario is repeated each and every year now ever since the AP has become a tool of the big money TV news media. The big money out West TV market of USC was never a # 2 to begin with this year. USC was coming off a year probation from less scholarships and has not had time to have the depth that is needed in today's big time college football championship run. USC suffered injury at center after two games. They of course lost to Stanford. Now the spots writers are trying to put Notre Dame into the top 10. You can see the writers putting them closer, and closer, to the top group. How can the college football fans get a real picture of who is the best college football team in spite of all this TV news media corruption?"

USC tumbles, Stanford rises in AP poll

September, 16, 2012
By Ted Miller | ESPN.com

Stanford's 21-14 win over USC created a nearly equal and opposite reaction in the AP poll.

USC tumbled 11 spots from No. 2 to No. 13. And Stanford jumped 12 notches from 21st to No. 9.

Oregon moved up to No. 3, meaning reporters believe the Ducks to be the best team to take on the SEC champion for the national title, at least at this point.

Alabama was No. 1 with 58 votes. LSU, at No. 2, got the other two. Those two SEC West teams meet on Nov. 3.

The Pac-12 continued to have five ranked teams, and Oregon State was tops among other teams getting votes, the equivalent of ranking 26th.

Dandy Don's Sports Report

9/17/12 5:50 am CDT

Good morning, Tiger Fans.
After LSU’s big win and USC’s lost to Stanford Saturday night, the Tigers have moved up to No. 2 in the AP poll. LSU will be begin SEC play this Saturday with a road game at Auburn, and the Tigers of LSU have opened as an 18.5-point favorite, which I think is about right.
Last night I was looking through LSU’s stats after three games and decided to compare them to last season’s stats, and what I found was interesting. Last year at this point the Tigers had played better competition and were 3-0 with wins over No. 3 Oregon, Northwestern State and No. 25 Mississippi State, so I realize that a comparison of the team based on the first three games will be a bit skewed, but let’s go there anyway as I think it will help put this team’s strengths and weaknesses in perspective.
Last year’s LSU Football Team (2011) vs. this year’s (2012) team:
                                        2011          2012
Points scored through 3 games .........  108           145
Points allowed through 3 games .........  36            31
LSU total offense ..................... 1034          1417
Opponents total offense ................ 623           615
LSU net yards rushing ...................498           808
LSU net yards passing ...................536           609
LSU average yards per catch ............12.7          12.7
LSU touchdown passes ....................  4             4
LSU rushing to passing ratio ......... 65/35         64/36
LSU average yards per play ..............5.1           6.9
LSU Penalty-Yards ....................21-165        23-156
LSU average yards per punt ............   40          46.5
Sacks by LSU, yards.....................5-28          4-28
Sacks by opponents, yards ..............3-24          5-37
Red-zone scores...................15/15(100%)    14/17(82%)
Red-zone touchdowns ..............12/15 (80%)    11/17(65%)

Bidding adieu a hard thing to do

By BEN LOVE
Outgoing Tiger Rag Editor

Being the editor of Tiger Rag is like being the king of Mardi Gras.
That’s how one close friend of mine reflected recently when I told him I’d no longer be the editor of this fine publication.
It was a head-scratcher for him.
How could anybody in his or her right mind give up the perks, the exposure, the good times and the credibility that come with the territory?
It’s not easy.
After almost three years reveling in the LSU parade, following the main act, the Tigers, and then putting ink to paper about such a continuously grand production, it is indeed difficult to imagine a day would come when I’d relinquish my post.
But that day has come. read more...http://www.tigerrag.com/?p=220612

Around the SEC: Week Three

Auburn narrowly avoids another UL-Monroe SEC upset

With LSU on the horizon, Auburn head coach Gene Chizik can’t feel good about the way his War Eagles earned their first victory in 2012 (Todd Van Emst, AU Athletics).

After pulling off the “Shock in Little Rock” with an overtime victory versus Arkansas last week, the UL-Monroe Warhawks tried to go two-for-two against the SEC West in as many weeks at Auburn Saturday.
UL-Monroe successfully got the game to overtime with a furious 14-point fourth-quarter comeback, but Auburn made their extra-period field goal and the Warhawks didn’t, falling 31-28 on the Plains.
Following another fantastic performance in an SEC cathedral, Warhawk QB Kolton Browning has completed 70-of-113 passes for 649 yards with six touchdowns and one pick versus a pair of SEC defenses. Keep your head up UL-Monroe. You just got yourself on the college football map.
The squad that UL-Monroe knocked off last week, Arkansas, suffered their second-consecutive utterly humiliating loss, 52-0, to Alabama in Fayetteville. Read more...http://www.tigerrag.com/?p=220552

Associated PressLSU defenders Sam Montgomery (99) and Jalen Collins (32) congratulate Lavar Edwards (89) after his pick-six early in the third quarter gave the Tigers a 35-14 lead over Idaho.
TURNING POINT: LSU was never in serious doubt of losing or even falling behind after seizing early command. But right when it looked like Idaho might have a chance to tighten things up again in the third quarter, Tiger defensive end Lavar Edwards snagged an interception in the right flat, shrugged off quarterback Dominique Blackman's tackle attempt and bulled into the end zone for a 23-yard touchdown return and 35-14 lead.
KEY STATS: Idaho carved out as many first downs of its own doing (non-penalty) in the second half as the Vandals had three-and-out possessions in the final 30 minutes. Read more...http://www.nola.com/lsu/index.ssf/2012/09/rewind_lsu_63_idaho_14.html

East: It’s hard to gauge LSU Tigers

By LES EAST
Advocate sportswriter
September 17, 2012
LSU was crossing the Ts and dotting the Is on an agreement to return to the Cowboys Classic to start the 2013 season at the same time the 2012 Tigers were completing one of the weakest preconference schedules in recent memory.
LSU most likely will begin next season against TCU in Cowboys Stadium, where the Tigers opened last season with a 41-20 victory against preseason No. 3 Oregon.
After that game, it was clear the Tigers were more than worthy of their preseason No. 4 ranking, and a game against the consistently talented Horned Frogs will be a good gauge of where the 2013 team stands after Labor Day weekend.
But as this year’s 3-0 team prepares to head to Auburn for its Southeastern Conference opener next Saturday, it’s hard to gauge where it is after three lopsided wins. Read more...http://theadvocate.com/sports/lsu/3913648-123/east-its-hard-to-gauge

Bowl Projections

BCS National Championship Game

BCS #1 vs. BCS #2
ESPN
Comment: The top two teams in the country play which will now be SEC champion LSU against Big 12 winner Oklahoma.-- Jerry Palm
The champions of selected conferences are contractually committed to certain bowls, unless they are No. 1 or No. 2. (ACC: Orange; Big Ten: Rose; Big 12: Fiesta; Pac-12: Rose; SEC: Sugar). If a Bowl loses a host team to the title game, then the bowl gets first choice at a replacement team. The rest of the selection order for 2013 is as follows: Fiesta, Sugar, Orange.
