Is LSU recruiting better horses?

Tinker Town Tiger: Well, ha ha ha. The thing about recruiting is that you need to get better football players then your opponents. What the chances are that you recruit the best football players in America. Multiplied by thousand of college football program across our country. And you begin to get a realistic picture of just what your favorite college football team is up against. The better winning football programs are rolling along on top of the recruiting game because that is their history of doing just that.

Now the SEC has a dynasty going on in the presents of Alabama. Les Miles help put Nick Saban into that rare reality by not being a good college football coach. If Les Miles was worth his salt, LSU would have beat Nick Saban high ambitions back. And simply put the shoe on the other guys foot. Namely Nick Saban. But the truth won out and Saban is flying high and LSU at best is treading water.

The LSU people with all the excuses to the contrary are quoting Les Miles win loss record. ECT. Wow, are you kidding yourself on purpose?

The offseason is real. The offseason, unfortunately, is here.
As depressing as this all is, it’s never too early to look ahead. Yes, there are odds already out there when it comes to the 2014 BCS National Championship—it doesn’t take long—and we’ve gone ahead and assessed what we can expect for next season.
I mean, why wait?

Recruiting and spring football will still shape and mold these odds as we make it through winter, spring and summer, but the foundations for many of these teams is in place. Here is a very early top five when it comes to 2014 BCS Championship odds now that we’ve officially turned the page.

Dandy Don's LSU Sports Report

Good morning, Tiger Fans,

Yesterday Priest Willis and his good friend Tahaan Goodman announced their school of choice, and, as expected, it was UCLA. I suspect that LSU will continue to pursue Willis while at the same pushing a little harder for another safety target, Jamal Carter. Carter is currently committed to Miami but the staff likes where they stand with him. Other prospects who will probably be getting a lot of attention from LSU in the next 13 days are defensive end Tashawn Bower (DE, 6'5", 235, Somerville, NJ) and Eddie Jackson (WR/DB, 6'0", 180, Lauderdale Lakes, FL), both of whom are reported to be visiting LSU this weekend.

A lot of Tiger Fans who were concerned about LSU taking a commitment from unranked wide receiver Kevin Spears of Holy Cross are now feeling much better since Rivals and ESPN have both given him a 4-star rating. According to my source at Holy Cross High School, Coaches Adam Henry and Corey Raymond went to Holy Cross yesterday to watch Spears at basketball practice and then followed up with an in-home visit. While at the school, they also checked out another big-time prospect at Holy Cross – class of 2015 wide receiver Michael Chigbu (6'2", 210). Chigbu is a freak of an athlete who just begun playing football this year as a sophomore and will be very highly recruited by the time he’s a senior.

Speaking of top prospects for the future, today I’ve continued revealing my list of Top Louisiana Prospects for the Class of 2014 by posting numbers 11-15.
11. Malachi Dupre (WR, 6'3", 180, John Curtis)
12. Davon Godchaux (DL, 6'4", 250, Plaquemines)
13. Garrett Brumfield (OG, 6'4", 260, University High)
14. Gerrald McDowell (DT/LB, 6'3", 250, Covington)
15. Donovan Isom (QB, 6'5", 225, Destrehan)
Click here to view the entire list-in-progress, which now contains numbers 11-50.

Season report card: Texas A&M

January, 24, 2013

By Edward Aschoff | ESPN.com

It's time to grade Texas A&M's first season in the SEC:

OFFENSE: Remember how the Aggies' offense was supposed to struggle without Ryan Tannehill running things and a redshirt freshman replacing him at quarterback? Yeah, that really worked out. Thanks to the minds of Kevin Sumlin, offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and a Heisman Trophy winner in Johnny Manziel, the Aggies ran over most of their new opponents in 2012 with the SEC's top offense. Texas A&M averaged a league-high 558.5 yards per game (third nationally). The Aggies also led the SEC in rushing (242.1), passing (316.5) and scoring offense (44.5). A&M registered more than 400 yards in 12 games and more than 600 yards in seven games. Johnny Football became the first freshman to ever win the Heisman and broke the SEC record for total offense with 5,116 yards (3,706 passing and 1,410 rushing). He also totaled 47 touchdowns and led the SEC in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns (21). Manziel had a special year, but he also got help from a dynamic receiving duo in freshman Mike Evans and senior Ryan Swope, who combined to catch 154 passes for 2,018 yards and 13 touchdowns. Uzoma Nwachukwu only caught 26 passes, but he added seven more receiving touchdowns. When Manziel wasn't darting past or slipping by defenders, A&M's running game mostly went through running back Ben Malena, who finished the year with 808 yards and eight touchdowns. Christine Michael added 12 more rushing touchdowns. A&M was also equipped with one of the top offensive lines in the country led by Luke Joeckel and Jake Matthews. Grade: A+

DEFENSE: The Aggies ranked seventh or lower in the SEC in the four major defensive categories, including ranking 12th in pass defense (250.7 yards per game). Teams scored 36 touchdowns on the Aggies and averaged 21.8 points per game. The Aggies surrendered 20-plus points in seven games, including allowing 57 points in a back-and-forth win over Louisiana Tech. A&M might have had some issues when it came to slowing down the yardage and points, but in its two losses, the Aggies allowed just 20 and 24 points. The Aggies gave up 390.2 yards per game and grabbed just 16 takeaways. Defensive end Damontre Moore became a real star. He was one of the top defenders in the country, tying for eighth nationally with 12.5 sacks and seventh with 21 tackles for loss. He also led the Aggies with 85 total tackles and nine quarterback hurries. The defense, which was relatively young in the back end, might have had a little more bend than the coaches would like, but it rarely broke down and held an Oklahoma offense to just 13 points in the AT&T Cotton Bowl. Grade: B-

OVERALL: The Aggies were supposed to struggle in their first year in the SEC, but flourished instead. Johnny Football was a major reason why, but Sumlin instilled an extremely tough personality during spring ball that carried over to the season. Alabama might have been crowned college football's national champion, but after a 41-13 beat down of Oklahoma, the Aggies made a solid case for being the nation's top team -- and A&M was the only team to top the Crimson Tide with a 29-24 win in Tuscaloosa. The defense needed to be bailed out by the offense at times, but even with no bye week during the regular season, the Aggies never seemed to slow down. If not for the opener against Louisiana Tech being postponed, the season might have been even better with a game under the Aggies' belt before taking on Florida. A&M wasn't as sharp against LSU, but was in serious contention for a BCS bowl game late in the year. Grade: A

Miles’ contract amendent to go before Board

Coach’s 4.3M salary over next seven years up for approval next Friday

Tiger Rag News Services
An amendment that would extend the contract of LSU head football coach Les Miles and increase his annual compensation will be presented to the LSU Board of Supervisors on February 1, it was announced Thursday by Joe Alleva, Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics.

“Les Miles is one of the most successful coaches in America and he has the LSU program in position to compete for championships each and every year in the most dominant football conference in the country,” Alleva said.  “He recruits at an elite level, his players graduate and he is a respected member of the community.  We are proud he will lead the LSU football program for the long-term future.”

In the period since 2005 when he became head coach, LSU has the most overall victories of any team in the powerful Southeastern Conference.  Miles’ overall winning percentage of .802 is the fifth best mark in the history of the SEC.

A total of 167 players have received their college degrees under Miles’ watch and LSU has posted the second highest Graduation Success Rate in the SEC, trailing only Vanderbilt, each of the last two years.

Miles will receive annual compensation of $4.3 million per year for seven years under the terms of the new contract amendment, an adjustment to Miles’ existing contract that pays him $3.751 million annually and was due to expire in December of 2017. The new amendment was agreed upon in principle in December.  The amendment would be effective on January 1, 2013 and extend to December 31, 2019.

Miles’ annual compensation includes base salary and other compensation such as Tiger Athletic Foundation, radio, television, internet and public speaking payments.

Additionally in the proposed new amendment, LSU will pay $150,000 each year of the agreement into an account owned and controlled by LSU.  Miles can collect the funds in the account totaling $750,000 after serving the first five years of the contract.  He can collect the final $300,000 in the account if he serves the final two years of the contract.

Since becoming LSU’s head coach in 2005, he has become the second-winningest coach in school history with a record of 85-21, trailing only Hall of Fame coach Charles McClendon in total victories.  He has led the Tigers to three Southeastern Conference Western Division titles, two SEC championships and the 2007 BCS National Championship.  The Tigers have finished in the top five in the nation four times under his leadership and posted the only perfect 13-0 regular season in school history in 2011.

“extend to December 31, 2019.” HOLY SHITBALLS, Batman!
6 more years of total arrogance, pathetic offenses, no offensive scheme, undiscplined teams, unprepared teams, etc.
Les Miles is, undoubtedly, the LUCKIEST MAN in the history on mankind. Average coach = Super human salary for producing consistently bad offenses!

How about refusing to pay these guys that kind of money. And bring some sanity into our LSU business ethics again. Paying Les Miles 4.3 million dollars is insane.
And this guy can’t even coach?

National Signing Day 2013: Schools That Need to Have Good Day

The biggest day in college football recruiting is exactly two weeks away. National signing day is the day that determines whether your school gets that five star standout, or loses him to your bitter rival.

While most prospects are already verbally committed, that doesn't necessarily mean they will sign with the school they are linked to. Every year there are a few last minute switches that send shock-waves throughout college football.

A handful of top prospects remain uncommitted, and here are a few schools that would like to land these guys and finish strong on February 6th, 2013.
Florida State
Having no 5-star commitments in their 2013 recruiting class has to come as a disappointment to Florida State fans. After nabbing two last year, including the nation's No. 1 player Mario Edwards, the 'Noles have struck out on blue chippers so far.

There is still time though, and a couple of uncommitted five stars that have the Noles in their final three. Outside linebacker Matthew Thomas and offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil are the two biggest catches out there for Florida State. If FSU can steal Tunsil from the Crimson Tide that would be a huge lift for an offensive line that just lost Menelik Watson to the NFL. Thomas, on the other hand, seems to be an FSU lean, boosting an already exceptional linebacking class.

Other prospects the 'Noles could sign on February 6 include Stacy Coley and verbal USC commit Jalen Ramsey. Coley is a 4-star wide receiver from Oakland Park, FL who will be choosing between Miami and FSU, but is a lean to the latter. Ramsey would surprise nobody if he continues the max exodus from USC by decommiting and playing somewhere closer to his Tennessee roots, FSU is definitely in play.
