Cameron new LSU OC

By Bruce Feldman | Senior College Football Columnist
February 8, 2013 3:02 pm ET
Cam Cameron was fired by the Ravens before the NFL playoffs. (US Presswire)
Cam Cameron is LSU's new offensive coordinator, a source confirmed to CBS on Friday. Cameron and Tigers head coach Les Miles have been tight for years, dating back to their days on Bo Schembechler's staff at University of Michigan in the '80s.

The 52-year-old Cameron had been the Baltimore Ravens OC but was fired during the regular season, before the team went on its Super Bowl run. Cameron replaces Greg Studrawa, who ran a Tiger team that finished No. 85 in the nation in total offense in 2012. LSU, which finished 10-3, did have to overcome an assortment of injuries on its O-line.

Cameron's first project will be trying to help develop Zach Mettenberger, the team's strong-armed QB. The program has been plagued by suspect quarterback play for years and seemingly has been able to win in spite of its QBs. Last season, LSU ranked No. 92 in passing and Mettenberger only had a 12-7 TD-INT ratio.

Cameron does have a good reputation for developing talent. He deserves credit for the evolution of Ravens QB Joe Flacco, who Cameron mentored for five seasons (2008-12). While in San Diego with the Chargers (2002-07), Cameron played a key role in the development of Pro Bowl QBs Drew Brees and Philip Rivers, RB LaDainian Tomlinson and TE Antonio Gates.

As head coach at Indiana from 1997-2001 -- his most recent collegiate stop -- Cameron helped QB Antwaan Randle El blossom into one of the most dynamic talents in college football. Cameron went 18-37 in five seasons with the Hoosiers before an 11-year run in the NFL, which included 10 seasons as a coordinator and a disastrous 1-15 year as head coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2007.

Report: LSU hires Cam Cameron as offensive coordinator

Story Highlights

  • Cameron, 52, was fired by the Ravens after a Week 14 loss to the Washington Redskins
  • LSU ranked 10th out of 14 SEC teams in total offense last season
  • LSU head coach Les Miles was an assistant at Michigan with Cameron from 1987-1993

BATON ROUGE -- Fired Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, an old friend of LSU coach Les Miles, has been rumored to be joining the Tigers' staff as offensive coordinator for more than a week, and it may be coming true.

Cameron will become LSU's new offensive coordinator, according to a report Friday afternoon by CBS Sports.com's Bruce Feldman that attributed it to an anonymous source.

Miles nor LSU sports information director Michael Bonnette had any immediate comment. When asked about possible staff changes on Wednesday, Miles did leave it open, saying, "I haven't given much thought to changes on this staff at this point." Bonnette said at the time he doubted anything would happen on Friday or early next week because the coaches were off.

KNUCKLEBALLS: Former LSU QBs on baseball reality show

Cameron, 52, was fired by Ravens' head coach John Harbaugh late in Baltimore's regular season partly for an overly vanilla offense and for not accepting much intake from other coaches. Baltimore went on to win the Super Bowl with quarterback Joe Flacco taking the most valuable player honor.

PAY DAY: Flacco wants long-term deal

Greg Studrawa, who has been LSU's offensive coordinator and offensive line coach the last two seasons, is expected to remain as offensive line coach. Studrawa became offensive coordinator in August of 2011 only after offensive coordinator Steve Kragthorpe was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, which is a condition that can be aggravated by stress.

Miles had hired Kragthorpe in January of 2011 after letting struggling offensive coordinator Gary Crowton go following the 2010 season. Kragthorpe stayed on staff as quarterbacks coach for the last two seasons. Kragthorpe still wants to coach, but he may be moved to a non-coaching position in the football program or athletic department with the addition of Cameron, who is known as a quarterback guru on the college and NFL level.

Flacco praised Cameron during Super Bowl week in New Orleans, and Harbaugh plans on giving Cameron a Super Bowl ring.

Cameron is also a former head coach at Indiana and at the Miami Dolphins, where he went 1-15 in 2007 after replacing former LSU head coach Nick Saban. Former LSU head coach Gerry DiNardo, whom Saban replaced at LSU, replaced Cameron as Indiana's coach in 2002.

Cameron and Miles coached together at Michigan from 1987 through 1993 on the offensive side of the ball. On June 5, 1993, Cameron was a groomsmen in Miles' wedding along with DiNardo.

Cameron was a quarterback coach with the Washington Redskins in the NFL from 1994-96 before serving as head coach from 1997-2001 at Indiana, where he went 18-37 at a program that has struggled historically. He had some of his most successful years as San Diego's offensive coordinator from 2002-06. After leaving Miami after the 2007 season, he was the Ravens offensive coordinator from 2008 through most of 2012.

Talk about it in Tiger Penthouse

Speaking at his signing day press conference last Wednesday, LSU coach Les Miles simply said that he has not given any thought to changes in his coaching staff.
Getty images
Cam Cameron and Les Miles' close friendship goes back many decades
That statement did not close the door on shifts among the Tigers assistants. Speculation in recent days has centered on former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron coming to LSU, possibly in the same role.

One website, which concentrates on coaching movement, published that Cameron is heading to LSU. There has been no comment from LSU. With school closed for Mardi Gras until midday Wednesday, one would not expect any announcement forthcoming for a few days.

Cameron, who has been a close friend of Miles for years, was fired as Ravens offensive coordinator with three weeks remaining in the regular season. Baltimore had a 9-4 record at the time of Cameron's dismissal.

Quarterbacks coach Joe Caldwell took over for Cameron. The Ravens lost two of their final three regular-season games before winning four consecutive playoff contests en route to the Super Bowl championship.

Cameron became Baltimore's offensive coordinator in 2008 - the same year in which John Harbaugh was named its head coach. Joe Flacco became the Ravens starting quarterback at the same time Cameron was named offensive coordinator.

Flacco is the Ravens' all-time leader in passing yards. In five regular seasons, Flacco has completed 61 percent of his passes for more than 17,600 yards and 102 touchdowns with 56 interceptions. Baltimore has won at least one playoff game in each of Flacco's five seasons.

According to published reports, Cameron was dismissed due to the lack of use of No. 1 tailback Ray Rice. The Ravens did feature the running game more with Caldwell calling the plays.

Cameron, who was a football and basketball player at Indiana, began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Michigan in 1983. Cameron became a full-time assistant for the Wolverines in 1985 and spent nine years there.

Cameron coached both wide receivers and quarterbacks during his time at Michigan. Miles was also a member of the Wolverines coaching staff from 1987 through 1994. So, Cameron and Miles worked together for seven seasons under Bo Schembechler and Gary Moeller.

The only other college experience for Cameron occurred from 1997-2001 when he was the head coach at Indiana. The Hoosiers had an 18-37 record in Cameron's five seasons. During that time, Antwaan Randle El became the first player in Division I history to both pass and run for 40 touchdowns.

Following his dismissal at Indiana, Cameron returned to the NFL as offensive coordinator of the San Diego Chargers. In five years with San Diego, Cameron worked with New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees and Philip Rivers, whose brother Stephen is Zach Mettenberger's backup at LSU.

Cameron's success at San Diego led to his hiring as the head coach with the Miami Dolphins. In his one year with Miami, Cameron had a 1-15 record. Cameron then moved to Baltimore.

Presently, Greg Studrawa is LSU's offensive line coach/offensive coordinator and Steve Kragthorpe is quarterbacks coach. There has been speculation that Kragthorpe, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2011, would move to an off-the-field position. Again, nothing is official.

LSU hopes to have an official announcement next week, according to The Associated Press, which earlier reported talks were ongoing between Cameron and the school.

Cameron was fired by Ravens coach John Harbaugh after a Week 14 loss to the Washington Redskins. After some late-season struggles, Baltimore went on to win the Super Bowl with former Colts coach Jim Caldwell as offensive coordinator.

Greg Studrawa has been LSU's offensive coordinator the past two seasons. He is expected to be retained as offensive line coach.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Part Mardi Gras, part tailgate

LSU's Bayou Bash is a festive blend of football, tailgating and Mardi Gras

Updated: February 8, 2013, 11:12 AM ET
By Gary Laney | GeauxTigerNation

BATON ROUGE, La. -- If you walked into an entrance to the exhibition hall of the Baton Rouge River Center on Wednesday, you'd have found everything you'd need to experience the Cajun football lifestyle, morning, noon and night.
There were Krispy Kreme donuts and the local favorite Community Coffee at two booths. There were bowls of jambalaya, beer served in plastic cups, burgers, hot dogs and soda. And they were all lined up, side-by-side.

[+] EnlargeTiger Stadium
Sean Gardner/Getty ImagesNight games at LSU enjoy a special atmosphere. LSU tries to recreate some that on signing day with the

Bayou Bash.
And all of it was free.
That is, if you paid your $45 (unless if you bought ahead) to spend your day with 2,000 other LSU fans at the Bayou Bash, LSU's annual signing day party it claims is the biggest signing day event in college football.

It's hard to argue.

The Bash has begun bright and early every signing day for 18 years, and it ends after head coach Les Miles addresses the crowd around 5 p.m.

In between, fans can watch ESPNU's signing day coverage on a series of large screen TVs around the hall, cheer when a Tashawn Bower flips to the Tigers, jeer when a Robert Nkemdiche picks Ole Miss (which actually happened too early for Bayou Bashers this year) and eat, drink and be merry in between.

"It's actually like we're tailgating," said a Baton Rouge fan who said his name was Steven. He wore the purple-and-gold golf shirt and khaki pants that seemed to be favored by the crowd. He held a beer in one hand and a Styrofoam bowl of jambalaya in the other. "After the season's over, we don't get to tailgate, at least not for football, until September. We need something in between."

For the true LSU football fan, the Bash is it. Mixing the state's love for tailgating and a party -- it's right in the middle of the Mardi Gras season, just a few days after downtown parades passed right in front of the River Center -- with its insatiable appetite for all things LSU football, it's something worth playing hooky from work for on a Wednesday.

Outside the exhibition hall, a handful of radio stations did live broadcasts, a mini-replica of the famous "radio row" at SEC media days. Another did its show from inside the hall, a constant crowd gathered around to listen.

Other fans gathered around the TVs, where ESPNU's all-day coverage was mixed with LSU highlight videos.

"My only complaint," one Tiger fan said, with a laugh, "was paying for an LSU event and looking up to see Gene Chizik and Derek Dooley (ex-coaches of two of LSU's SEC rivals who worked signing on for ESPNU) on TV."

Not to worry, there were plenty of LSU-centric moments to be found, from national television interviews of Les Miles and assistant coach Frank Wilson at LSU's football facility about five minutes south of the River Center, to everything that surrounded the room.

There were silent auctions for memorabilia, posters of famous game covers provided by the Baton Rouge Advocate, college football video games set to pit LSU against SEC rivals (the game's maker, EA Sports, has its North American test center on LSU's south campus) and, of course, food and drink.

Lots of food and drink.

As the beer flowed and the crowd got more, um, enthused by the day's happening, the buildup grew for Miles' arrival shortly after 5 p.m., which in early February meant he got there just before the sun started to go down.

In that way, he was like his team, which takes the field at Tiger Stadium for its traditional evening kickoffs just before the sun goes down.

Miles arrived at the River Center to find himself in front of a crowd that, like at Tiger Stadium on a Saturday night, had been gathered all day, had consumed a generous portion of burgers and beer and was ready for the main event right at dusk.

In September, the team provides the headline act. At the Bayou Bash, it's Miles, who played up to the fervor to the crowd just like his team in September.

Sometimes Miles can play to that enthusiasm, like in 2012, when he gave his infamous "chest" observation on Gunner Kiel.

This year, there was nothing quite so controversial. He broke down the players in the signing class one by one and told LSU's fans the players the Tigers landed that day were "just what we needed."

And with that, the bash ended for another year, having provided LSU's fans, starved for a football experience during the offseason, just what it needed.
