For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?

Tinker:

For a high school football player to sign a contract to play football at the college of his choice. Is a big step into becoming a grown up with responsibility. Their word and signature, will be their bond from here on out. No more kid stuff. Because it will be too late for tears after they sign the dotted line. All of the 2013 high school football player will sign on the dotted line today. The National Letter of Intent.

Then the reality of working hard to achieve their goal will of course close in on the dreams of so many. The reality of the real world. Where people can and do fail. And commit crimes, mayhem of all sort. And were some poor souls even go stark raving crazy. Really?

What college football program will sign the right football player. To start training the young talent football players of their choice. To one day become the future # 1 college football team in America. Is even more of a burden because the big bucks people trying to coach and train these high school football players. Are very grown up, with no excuses.

Not only are the college football fans, and coaches, looking for size, strength, speed. But also the hidden intangibles of common sense, intelligence, and learning ability.

"Character."

The hopes and dreams of becoming a champion is a lot more involved. Then what meets the eye of some people. Who just mostly look at the superficial image of what they want. Against the reality of how in fact do we get there?

On a 100 yard college football field. You work hard, and play smart. Or you lose for sure. There is no other way to win. You must work for it. And of course be smart about what you do.

Also it is not very nice for people to use their neighbors. And very unsightly in fact for people to use their friends. That even becomes a more serious dastardly trick. To act out the low down trait of a true louse, that uses their own family members. And it would be simply a disaster, to try and use your god.  Betrayal is not a virtue.

So they should step into their new grown up boots to get ready to really work hard for a living. They should give it their very best shot. Because of our reality, they will only be young once. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?

National Signing Day 2013 Primer

Chris Jones
Chris Jones

National Recruiting Analyst
Posted Feb 5, 2013

A look at some of the top questions that will have answers come Signing Day on Wednesday.

Which team will be No. 1?

On the field, Ohio State got the last laugh on Michigan back in November.  On the recruiting charts, the Buckeyes are hoping for much the same, but they'll need to close strong to catch the Wolverines.

Currently, Michigan sits at the top of the Scout.com team recruiting rankings, just ahead of the Buckeyes.  Notre Dame is sitting there at No. 3, but they could close with a couple of big fish themselves, most notably the No. 9 overall prospect, Eddie Vanderdoes.  It may not be enough to catch either Ohio State or Michigan, but they'd gladly take Vanderdoes over the top spot.

Alabama is sitting there at No. 8, but a typical Signing Day flurry is expected for the Tide, including potential signings of Vanderdoes, A'Shawn Robinson and Vonn Bell (who Ohio State is also hoping for).  The Tide already have five five-star prospects, and could see that number grow even more.

UCLA probably won't be making it to the top, but the Bruins' are poised for a strong close themselves that could legitimately put them in the top three.

And a couple more Signing Day grabs, like Robert Nkemdiche, could put Ole Miss higher than they've ever been.

Where does Nkemdiche go?

The general consensus is that the No. 1 player in the country, Robert Nkemdiche, will end up at Ole Miss.

Robert Nkemdiche's decision will be the headliner of National Signing Day.
His older brother Denzel is a linebacker with the Rebels, and it has been felt for a while that Robert would follow his big brother.

He'll not waste any time on Signing Day, announcing at 7:45 a.m. ET.

What will Foster do?

Reuben Foster committed to Alabama once, when he was living in Georgia. Then he moved to the city of Auburn in Alabama and committed to the Tigers, complete with a tattoo.

On Monday night on FOX Sports South, the No. 2 overall prospect committed again to the Tide.

But where will he sign on Wednesday?  All signs point to the Tide holding on to him for the 36 hours they need following his announcement.  But this is one that no one can feel comfortable about until a fax is sitting in an office somewhere.

Which way for Chris Jones?

Thankfully, this will be answered on Signing Day.

The under-the-radar Jones committed to Mississippi State in the fall. At the time, he was a relative unknown, and the Bulldogs were content to keep it that way.

Then he blew up at the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic and again at the Under Armour All-America Game.

Now, Ole Miss is trying to stick it to their rivals and take Jones, the No. 2 defensive end in Scout.com's rankings, while the Bulldogs are doing what they can to hold on to their one-time diamond in the rough.

It has been a "Did He or Didn't He" recruitment on whether he was visiting each school.

As if there isn't bad enough blood between the two Magnolia State rivals, this recruitment can only add to it.

West Coast or national for Vanderdoes?

RECRUIT PROFILES

Check out our entire series of top recruit profiles as we count down to Signing Day:
Jan. 24: No. 12 Thomas Tyner
Jan. 25: No. 11 Montravius Adams
Jan. 26: No. 10 Ricky Seals-Jones
Jan. 27: No. 9 Eddie Vanderdoes
Jan. 28: No. 8 Max Browne
Jan. 29: No. 7 Laremy Tunsil
Jan. 30: No. 6 Derrick Green
Jan. 31: No. 5 A'Shawn Robinson
Feb. 1: No. 4 Su'a Cravens
Feb. 2: No. 3 Jaylon Smith
Feb. 3: No. 2 Reuben Foster
Feb. 4: No. 1 Robert Nkemdiche
The most intriguing recruiting battle out West is that of Eddie Vanderdoes, the five-star defensive tackle from Northern California.

Vanderdoes committed to USC in July, but then opened things up in December.

He visited UCLA in November and Washington in December, before a three-week blitz of trips to USC, Notre Dame and Alabama to wind down the recruiting cycle.

Vanderdoes will make his decision public on Wednesday at 5 p.m. PT, choosing between the five schools, but it's thought to be down to Alabama, Notre Dame and UCLA, with the latter two being the most commonly expected to get him.

If he picks UCLA, he's the crown jewel in Jim Mora's first full class.  If he chooses Notre Dame, he joins Jaylon Smith as another top 10 overall prospect headed to South Bend.  If it's Alabama? Well, he becomes yet another of those elite defensive prospects that Nick Saban seems to snag every year.

Any Signing Day drama?

In years past, you've had Cyrus Kouandjio -- 2011's No. 2 overall prospect -- announce for Auburn on Signing Day, only to not fax in his letter-of-intent and choose Alabama a couple days later.

You've had DeAnthony Thomas -- 2011's No. 3 overall prospect -- be a USC commit for a long, long time, only to take an 11th-hour trip to Oregon that was almost completely off his recruiting radar, then emerge late on Signing Day night in all Oregon gear to announce he would be signing with the Ducks.

You've had longtime Notre Dame commit Deontay Greenberry -- a 2012 five-star recruit -- out of the blue send his letter-of-intent to Houston (Houston!?), one of the biggest five-star surprises ever.

Or Jordan Payton -- a four-star wide receiver in 2012 -- signing with UCLA the day after he committed to Washington on television, three weeks after he committed to Cal during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.  And that was a year and a half after he committed to USC.
Then there was Isaiah Crowell -- 2011's No. 5 overall prospect -- using a live bulldog to announce his decision to attend Georgia.

Suffice to say, if there is one thing that you can expect on Signing Day, it's drama.

Dandy Don's LSU Sports Report
Good morning, Tiger Fans,
First of all, it was really nice hearing from many of you yesterday about the interview with Mike Detillier that I posted. If you missed it, you can check it out here. Mike is very well respected by the Tiger Nation, and rightfully so. I appreciate his expert insight and hope to include more of it from time to time.

I also received email from many of you who were very concerned about Frank Herron possibly slipping away from LSU, but the good news is his commitment appears to be solid. According to reports that surfaced yesterday afternoon, the defensive coordinator at Memphis-Central said that Herron is 100 percent committed to being a Tiger and will sign with LSU tomorrow. As Detillier stated in our interview, Herron is one of the signature players in this year’s class and has a chance to be very special. Detillier compared him to Sam Montgomery and called him a better technician than Montgomery was out of high school, and that's saying a lot.

With National Signing Day only one day away, I've compiled the following tid-bits for those of you who will be following the action.

• Robert Nkemdiche’s announcement will come early tomorrow (6:30 a.m. CT ESPNU), and at this time it's too close to call between LSU and Ole Miss. Keep your fingers crossed and your browser on DandyDon.com. As soon as the news breaks, I will tweet it to all of you who follow DandyDonLSU, and I'll post it here.

• It doesn't look like there will be any unexpected flips by players currently committed to LSU. As mentioned above, Herron is reportedly solid to LSU, and I've heard that Boutte is too.

• One player I'll be monitoring is Tevin Lawson. Lawson has been committed to LSU for quite some time, but there are some academic issues that make it uncertain whether he’ll qualify, and therefore LSU decided to revert to a greyshirt offer last week. If things are squared away with the clearinghouse in time, Lawson could still be a part of this class, but it's looking doubtful to me.

• Other players to watch for (in addition to the ones mentioned above) include Tashawn Bower and Priest Willis. The chances with Willis are slim (30%), but I'd call Bower 50/50.

• Will there be any other surprises? Who knows? Sometimes a well-kept secret comes out of the blue on Signing Day. I'm not saying this will happen tomorrow, but you never know. That's what makes Signing Day so interesting.

To keep up with the action throughout Signing Day, keep your browser on our page of LSU Football Commitments/Signees Class of 2013, and/or follow DandyDonLSU on Twitter. As soon as a player’s signed LOI is received by LSU and announced at the Bash, we'll indicate it by placing a check next to the player’s name and noting the time that his papers were received. Then we’ll tweet the news as well.

In other news related to football recruiting, today I've posted numbers 81-100 on my list of Top LA Football Prospects for 2014. Tomorrow I will add the “Best of the Rest.” Click here for the list-in-progress, which now includes the full top-100.

With the 2013 football recruiting season in its final stretch, many Tiger Fans will soon turn their attention to LSU baseball, softball and basketball. I can hardly believe that LSU baseball begins in just 10 days, and I can hardly wait. Expectations are high for this team, but I think they’re very realistic considering the starters LSU returns and the addition of several highly touted freshmen from last year's signing class, several of whom have performed very well in LSU's preseason scrimmages. Below are a few stats from Friday, Saturday and Sunday’s scrimmages: Read more...http://www.dandydon.com/

Analyzing the predictive capability of recruiting rankings

SI.com Home

Alabama will look to secure Rivals' top class for the third straight year behind commits like five-star DE Jonathan Allen.
Behind commits like Jonathan Allen, 'Bama hopes to secure its third straight top-ranked recruiting class.
John Albright/Icon SMI

It's easy to become disgruntled with recruiting rankings. Take Johnny Manziel, for example. Rivals.com rated Manziel as a three-star prospect in the class of 2011, and he went on to win the Heisman Trophy during his record-setting redshirt freshman season at Texas A&M. Rivals also listed Le'Veon Bell as a two-star recruit when he came out of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, in 2010. The Michigan State running back rushed for 1,793 yards in 2012 before declaring for the NFL draft as a junior.

The recruiting model misses on some players. That's inevitable given the differences in skill, maturity and level of competition among teenage boys. But with National Signing Day just two days away, a bigger question looms: How accurately do team recruiting rankings predict on-field performance? In the study below, I averaged and analyzed Rivals' team ratings from the previous four years to find out just how telling post-Signing Day rankings are -- and how they stack up to the preseason AP Poll as a predictive measure of success.

How to predict a college football season

To determine how recruiting rankings impact team performance, I ran a regression model on Rivals' recruiting ratings over a four-year period in order to predict each team's performance for the subsequent season. For example, a prediction for the 2012 season is based on recruiting ratings from 2009-12; a prediction for the 2009 season is based on the ratings from 2006-09. This regression technique provides a model that assigns a weight to each of the previous four seasons of recruiting rankings.

To measure team performance for a given season, I used the team rating from The Power Rank algorithm. This method considers margin of victory and accurately adjusts for strength of schedule. Teams are ranked based on a formula that outputs an expected margin of victory against an average FBS team. The team with the higher rating won 62.8 percent of bowl games over the last 11 years (219 out of 349), a higher mark than the 62.2 percent picked by the Vegas line.

Analysis was restricted to the top teams in the FBS, since the Rivals' ratings tend to differentiate between these schools to a much greater extent than they do the lower-ranked teams. For example, in 2012, top-ranked Alabama had 140 more points than second-ranked Texas. Yet the difference between the 84th-ranked team (FIU) and the 122nd-ranked team (Army) was just 141 points. This small margin between so many schools makes it difficult to accurately rank them. Teams from AQ conferences typically occupy the top of Rivals' rankings, but the ratings for Notre Dame, BYU and Boise State were also factored into this study, to better compare the Rivals' model with the preseason AP Poll.

Rivals' model performed as well or better than the preseason AP Poll on 46 of 100 teams

The regression model on recruiting data assigns each team a rating that outputs an expected margin of victory against an average team, as alluded to above. Sorting schools by this rating creates a ranking system that can be compared with the preseason AP Poll. To determine which rankings were more accurate for a given year, I assessed each ranking system against the final AP Poll. For each team in the preseason AP Top 25 from 2009-12, I determined which poll -- the regression Rivals' rating or the preseason AP Poll -- offered a closer approximation of the team's year-end ranking. For example, the Rivals' model ranked Alabama No. 1 in 2012, while the preseason AP Poll listed the Crimson Tide at No. 2. Since 'Bama won the national championship and topped the final AP Poll, the Rivals' model "won" for this particular team. In some circumstances, the two rankings can also tie.

By using the last four seasons in this study, there were 100 teams to analyze. The Rivals' model served as an equally good or more accurate predictor than the preseason AP Poll 46 out of the 100 times; this corresponds to a win-loss-tie record of 42-54-4. The comparison for the 2012 season is charted directly below this section.

Keep in mind: The Rivals' model only considers the talent level of players who signed a National Letter of Intent when they were in high school. The model does not account for coaching, on-field performance, early NFL draft declarations, injuries or any other extenuating circumstance. Considering that the preseason AP Poll does take these factors into consideration, the success of the Rivals' rankings is somewhat remarkable.

Rivals100: Class of 2013 recruiting rankings

A little bit of common sense makes the Rivals' model even more powerful. The site -- much like fellow recruiting sites Scout.com and 247Sports.com -- routinely underestimates the rankings of Boise State and TCU, smaller programs that have repeatedly busted the BCS over the last four years. During that span, Rivals never ranked Boise State higher than 61st or TCU higher than 34th. The preseason AP Poll has been more accurate seven out of eight times on these two schools, with TCU's 2012 season serving as the only exception. Excluding these two teams from the data set, the Rivals' model performed as well or better than the preseason AP Poll 45 of 92 times.

Moreover, the Rivals' model typically ranks Notre Dame very high. The Irish's No. 18 rank before the 2012 season was their lowest recruiting finish from 2009-12. The preseason AP Poll has been more accurate in predicting Notre Dame three of the last four years. The lone exception was this year: Brian Kelly's squad -- unranked in the preseason AP Poll -- went 12-0 before losing the BCS title game against Alabama.

Finally, it's worth noting that Rivals started publishing its team recruiting rankings in 2002 and has gotten more accurate as the years have passed. The Rivals' model for 2012 incorporated more data than the model for 2009; the Rivals' rankings went 8-16-1 against the preseason AP Poll in '09, but 16-9-0 in '12 (below). Rivals slightly changed how it calculates team ratings for the 2013 recruiting season. I expect this model to perform even better next season.

recruiting-graphic

Four teams Rivals got right in 2012

First, let's look at two talent-rich teams that outperformed their preseason AP rank in 2012:

• Ohio State. Despite the Buckeyes' rich tradition and a new coach with the credentials of Urban Meyer, the preseason AP Poll had them listed at No. 18. However, Ohio State's success on the recruiting trail had it at No. 6 in the Rivals' model. The Buckeyes went undefeated and finished No. 3 in the final AP Top 25.

• Stanford. Given the departure of quarterback Andrew Luck and a pair of offensive linemen in the first two rounds of last year's NFL draft, the preseason AP Poll placed Stanford at No. 21. However, following recent recruiting developments, the Rivals' model ranked the Cardinal at No. 9. Stanford went on to win the Rose Bowl and finish the season No. 7 in the final AP Poll.

The Rivals' model can also identify several overrated teams that might not have the talent to support a lofty preseason ranking:

• West Virginia. The Mountaineers wrapped up the 2011 season with a resounding 70-33 Orange Bowl victory over Clemson, a performance that landed them at No. 11 in the 2012 preseason AP Poll. Yet after a hot start to the year, Dana Holgorsen's group sputtered through Big 12 conference play, eventually registering a 7-6 record. The Rivals' model had West Virginia at No. 39, which more accurately reflected a campaign in which West Virginia finished unranked in the final AP Poll.

• Michigan State. The preseason AP Poll had the Spartans at No. 13. But while their defense was elite again this season, the offense never played up to expectations despite the talents of Bell in the backfield. The Rivals' model ranked Michigan State at No. 32, and the 7-6 Spartans did not receive a single vote in the final AP Poll.

Why the 2013 recruiting rankings matter

The Rivals' model not only predicts future performance, it also provides insight into the dynamics of recruiting and team success. The regression model suggests that the most current recruiting rankings factor most heavily into a team's next-season results, which is slightly unexpected, as one might assume that ratings from two or three years ago should hold greater importance. After all, while freshmen continue to make bigger and bigger impacts, teams primarily rely on players with more experience.

However, teams coming off great seasons tend to land the best recruits. Consider Texas A&M this year, which has seen its pre-Signing Day recruiting ranking rise from No. 15 to No. 8 (as of Feb. 4) on the heels of its breakout 2012 campaign. The other top teams in Rivals' current rankings -- Florida, Alabama and Notre Dame -- all turned in terrific '12 seasons.

MANDEL: Under Sumlin, Texas A&M becoming a recruiting force

In sum: Recruiting rankings are more than a distraction used to pass the time until spring practice. Despite their extremely limited scope, they're nearly as accurate -- and in some cases, more so -- as the preseason AP Poll in predicting future on-field success.

  • For all the talk of can't-miss prospects and recruiting classes, sometimes rankings are wrong
  • In the increasing world of big-time college football, adults high-five when 18-year-olds sign
National Signing Day is Wednesday, and how the college football recruiting gurus love it.

I don't.

At least not the garish side. Boosters and media obsessed with the hourly whims of teenagers. Bright lights and center stage that seem so early. Or the hyper-hype, which is like chocolate. Too much of it can't be good for kids.

This is not to deny the day is often interesting, occasionally fascinating, and invariably necessary. There has to be some way for today's high school algebra student to be on tomorrow's Alabama depth chart.

NO. 1 AGAIN: SEC rules on signing day, too

And it is not new. The public has been living and dying with recruiting forever. But might the entire exercise have grown too big to be healthy, and too important to be rational? First overinflated in print, then websites and talk shows and television, now Twitter. The evolution of excess.

This just in! Defensive end Chris Jones has had to mask his movements and set up secret meetings with schools, so irate have the messages been from Mississippi and Mississippi State fans who are angry he might be leaning the other way.

Good thing Wednesday is near.

They're kids. They haven't even been to their senior proms yet. The fate of an institution should not ride on their signature. But it certainly sounds as if it does.

HUGH FREEZE: Mississippi coach calls out recruiting skeptics

You can only imagine the rainbow of emotions the coaches go through. In this world of short attention spans and disposable loyalty, yesterday's oral commitment can be erased faster than a text message. And often is.

This just in! Linebacker Reuben Foster announces Monday night he's chosen Alabama over Auburn and Georgia.

Wait a minute. Didn't Foster long ago have the Auburn logo tattooed onto his right forearm? Gee, doesn't that seem like a commitment? But then came the coaching change at Auburn, and he started looking again.

TOO FAR: Recruit received "death threats" from rival fans

So, another SEC first. Now playing linebacker for the Crimson Tide, the guy with the Auburn tattoo. Unless he changes his mind again Wednesday.

But so the ordeal goes. Weeks spent zigging and zagging, as the fans fixate, the recruit-niks speculate, the talk shows agitate, and the high school kids act like high school kids, chasing a dream down an uncertain road. The one constant is the smiles on the parents' faces. Wouldn't you be happy, if so many people were begging to pay your son's tuition?

This just in! Defensive end Robert Nkemdiche was able to meet Shaquille O'Neal on his visit to LSU.

Funny, wasn't Nkemdiche going to Clemson? He was. Then he wasn't. His brother goes to Mississippi so maybe that is a clue, but Florida is in the mix, too. And who tells Shaq no?

Anyway, ESPNU has announced its lineup for Wednesday, with various 18-year-olds informing the world who they plan on leading to the BCS championship game. An entire day of decisions made, verdicts read and caps put on, one after another. Nkemdiche starts it off at 7:30 a.m.

This just in! Crisis in Texas. Another decommittment.

Here's the thing. Sometimes what happens on NSD matters, sometimes it doesn't. On Scout.com, Texas' haul was ranked 1-3-3-7 the past four years. On Rivals.com, it was 2-3-3-5. A sure powerhouse. On paper, anyway.

How come the Longhorns were playing in the Alamo Bowl and not Sun Life Stadium on Jan. 7?

Tennessee has been ranked in the top 20 in recruiting by nearly every judge the past four years. The Volunteers just went 5-7. California and Auburn have gotten very high marks. Each just went 3-9.

Meanwhile, if you're talking recruiting rankings, Oregon is never in anyone's top 10. If you're talking the polls, the Ducks finished second, fourth and third the past three years.

But hey, the Weather Channel gets it wrong lots of times, too, and people still watch. The phenomenon only grows more torrid each February, with social media now the booster rocket. It is big-time college football in all its many tones; lively, loud — and sometimes overheated.

The letters of intent and fax machines are ready. Prepare for a wave of 18-year-olds saying yes, while adults high-five. Happy National Signing Day.

Frank Herron to sign with LSU despite a 'moment of weakness'

Frank Herron lsu commitment

Frank Herron's high school coach Brian Williams says the star defensive tackle will sign with LSU on Wednesday.

Central High Coach Brian Williams of Memphis, Tenn., called it "a moment of weakness" when star defensive tackle Frank Herron nearly spurned LSU by committing to Texas during a surprise visit to Austin last weekend. But Monday, Williams ended any speculation, announcing that the 6-foot-5, 280-pound defensive tackle would sign, as expected, with LSU on Wednesday.

"When we talked today, it came up that LSU was the school he wanted in the beginning and it is the school he ended up with," Williams said.

Prior to the Texas visit, Williams had been intimately involved with Herron's recruitment. However, when Longhorns running backs coach Larry Porter approached Herron directly about making a visit, he obliged.

Meanwhile, as news of the trip spread, so did rampant speculation on message boards and social media sites that Herron had already committed to Texas, which Williams denied.

"He just got a little sidetracked," Williams said of the visit.  "After talking to him and his mom today, he got it cleared up."

Herron's family was  supportive when he committed to LSU in June and wasn't happy to see him considering a change.

With LSU's recent exodus along the defensive front (early NFL draft entrants Bennie Logan, Barkevious Mingo, Sam Montgomery and senior Josh Downs), Herron is expected to challenge for playing time as a freshman next season.

Said Williams, "We are on the way to get his suit (for National Signing Day) right now."
