MSNBC Lands In Fourth Place In May; Maddow Hits Ratings Lows
The Huffington Post
|
By Jack Mirkinson
Posted: 05/30/2013
Another month of big crime and disaster news saw the network struggle to keep up with rivals CNN, HLN and Fox News. MSNBC was presumably expecting some dropoff from its 2012 numbers, since that was an election year, but it still landed in fourth place behind the other channels, a victim of HLN's Jodi Arias-fueled surge and of President Obama's scandal-ridden, defensive month. Overall, MSNBC saw its lowest total day viewer numbers since 2007, and its lowest prime time numbers since 2009.
MSNBC's prime time numbers were down across the board. Rachel Maddow delivered what the Hollywood Reporter said were her lowest total viewing figures in her show's history, and she even fell behind timeslot rival Piers Morgan—a very rare victory for the CNN host. Chris Hayes also delivered sharply lower ratings than the man he replaced, Ed Schultz, did in 2012. Both of them, along with hosts from Chris Matthews to Al Sharpton to Martin Bashir, landed in fourth place in their timeslots—a marked change from their normal second-place status. ("Morning Joe" did manage to come in second in its slot in total viewers.)
CNN, meanwhile, celebrated a big win over MSNBC, touting its status as the second-highest rated network in prime time for the month. It was up a whopping 85 percent in prime time on weekdays, and 61 percent in total day, compared to May 2012, when it experienced its worst ratings in 20 years. HLN did even better, with a 135 percent spike in prime time viewing. Nearly every anchor had something to crow about. Anderson Cooper, for instance, was up 99 percent in total viewers. Erin Burnett posted a 97 percent gain in the same category. There were even bigger increases in the all-important A25-54 demo.
MSNBC will presumably hope for the normal equilibrium of cable news to reassert itself in June. CNN embraced the Arias story nearly as enthusiastically as HLN did, but it has no guarantee of a similarly juicy story rearing its head any time soon.
Fox News, which had a plethora of Obama scandals to choose from, appeared to have bounced back from its relatively dire situation earlier in 2013.

Arizona mom Yanira Maldonado out of Mexico prison; drug allegations dropped
Erika Angulo / NBC News
Media witnessed the release of Yanira Maldonado from prison in Nogales, Mexico, late Thursday.
By Erika Angulo and Gil Aegerter, NBC News
NOGALES,
Mexico -- Yanira Maldonado, the Arizona mother held for more than a
week in a Mexico jail on suspicion of drug smuggling, was released late
Thursday after the case against her was dismissed. The mother-of-seven, from Goodyear, Arizona, would return immediately to the United States, her lawyer Jose Francisco Benitez Paz said.
Maldonado, 42, had been detained since May 22, when she and her husband were returning to the U.S. from a funeral. Soldiers said they had found 12 pounds of marijuana taped under her seat on a bus.
Her release came hours after court officials reviewed security footage - also seen by NBC - that showed the couple boarding a commercial bus traveling from Mexico to Phoenix with only blankets, bottles of water and her purse in hand.
Outside the jail she told reporters she wanted to thank God, her lawyer and the media who who made sure her case was heard.
Her husband, Gary Maldonado, crossed the border at Nogales, Ariz., to pick her up.
Arizona senator Jeff Flake posted on Twitter than the U.S. Consul General had confirmed Maldonado's release, and described it as "good news."
As
Arizona mom of seven Yanira Maldonado's court hearing on drug smuggling
charges begins in Nogales, Mexico, she is speaking out for the first
time, saying her "spirit is good," but she just wants "to go home."
NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.
Maldonado and her family had proclaimed her innocence.“I just want to be back home right now with my family, my kids and my husband,’’ Maldonado told Miguel Almaguer in an interview that aired earlier Thursday on TODAY.
"I wanted to find a way out, and I’m telling them I’m innocent, I’m innocent. I keep saying what happened, and I’m still here, so I just have faith in the Lord.”
Yanira Maldonado was born in Mexico but is a naturalized U.S. citizen, her family said. She and her husband were married a year ago.
A devout Mormon, she believes she may have been set up at the military checkpoint, where soldiers initially accused her husband of smuggling the marijuana before detaining her instead.
Maldonado was transferred from a Hermosillo jail to a women's facility in Nogales on Tuesday.
The family has also been updating a Facebook page in their quest to free Maldonado, which has garnered more than 15,000 supporters.
Matt Salmon of Arizona, who has been in close contact with the family, told TODAY on Thursday.
NBC News' Alastair Jamieson contributed to this report.

Amelia Earhart Plane Found? Sonar Image Of Possible Wreckage May Suggest Earhart Died On Island (VIDEO)
The Huffington Post

By Meredith Bennett-Smith
Posted: 05/30/2013 2:25 pm EDT | Updated: 05/30/2013 2:45 pm EDT
Researchers have discovered what may be the underwater wreckage of Amelia Earhart's missing plane.
Possible theories for the heroine's demise include a devastating crash into the Pacific, as well as capture and execution by the Japanese, according to PBS. However, researchers working with The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) believe they have found evidence that Earhart landed on a remote reef, after which her plane washed into the ocean and sank, according to the group's website.
TIGHAR-funded sonar imaging has revealed a 22-foot long object that represents a true "anomaly" in the group's data, Ric Gillespie, executive director of TIGHAR, told Discovery News. The piece, possibly wreckage from Earhart's Lockheed Electra, is located 600 feet beneath the Pacific Ocean and just west of the remote Nikumaroro Island.
The object came to light during a forensic analysis of data collected during a $2.2 million TIGHAR expedition last July. That trip marked the group's 10th Earhart fact-finding mission, according to ABC News.
The 39-year-old Earhart disappeared without a trace on July 2, 1937, while attempting to become the first woman to fly around the world, with only a navigator as company. Earhart lost radio contact during the journey's most difficult leg, as they headed from Lae, New Guinea, to Howland Island in the Pacific, Time notes.
Past expeditions by TIGHAR have turned up other intriguing, albeit inconclusive, clues, including what appears to be a jar of 30s-era jar of freckle cream found on Nikumaroro, ABC points out.
The jar, along with an American-made woman's compact, buttons and the zipper from a flight jacket, lend credence to TIGHAR's theory that Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, did not die immediately but were able to make an emergency landing on the uninhabited island's reef.
"The better a piece of evidence looks, the harder you have to try to disqualify it," TIGHAR writes. "So far, the harder we’ve looked at this anomaly, the better it looks. ... Maybe it’s pure coincidence that it‘s the right size and shape to be the Electra wreckage – the Electra that so much other evidence suggests should be in that location."
The next step is to raise more money and return for an 11th expedition. However, as a nonprofit, TIGHAR will have to raise the funds for the trip themselves.
"We currently project that it will take nearly $3,000,000 to put together an expedition that can do what needs to be done," Gillespie told Discovery. "It's a lot of money, but it's a small price to pay for finding Amelia."

Video: SEC spring meetings wrap

By ESPN.com staffChris Low and Edward Aschoff wrap up the SEC spring meetings on Thursday.

http://espn.go.com/blog/sec/
DESTIN, Fla. -- SEC coaches might have voted 13-1 to keep an eight-game
conference schedule, but they could be getting more than they bargained
for down the road.
For now, the eight games are safe and so is the 6-1-1 scheduling format, but with the College Football Playoff and the SEC Network looming, it's hard to believe that both of these models will stay after the 2015 season for college football's top conference.
Florida coach Will Muschamp might have said it best on Wednesday. He prefers an eight-game conference schedule -- which certainly benefits the Gators, considering they already have Florida State on the schedule -- but he understands that with all the change coming, nine games appears inevitable, even if it might not be what he thinks is best for the conference.
"There's a lot of question marks out there that are really hard to really answer right now, kind of like the nine-game schedule," Muschamp said. "Is that best for our league? We really don't know right now. At the end of the day, it's going to be great for the fans, it's going to be great for TV, but is that what's best for the Southeastern Conference? I don't know, right now."
Nick Saban began the week with the idea of SEC teams playing 10 BCS games every year -- during the regular season. That could be nine league games and then a bigger nonconference game or it could be eight league games with two bigger nonconference games.
Alabama athletic director Bill Battle echoed those same thoughts Wednesday.
"I don't know if nine (SEC) games is the answer. What I think is that we really need to play at least 10 good games," Battle said. "My personal feeling is we shouldn't be playing three or four games with, I guess, Football Championship (Subdivision) teams. Whether we play more conference games or just more FBS games, I think we need to play 10 (quality) games because our fans are going to get tired (of going to games with lesser opponents)."
He certainly has a point. Fans don't show up for the cupcakes like they show up for the creme brulee or even the carrot cake. Those games don't do well with ratings and they just aren't very exciting to watch in person or otherwise.
SEC commissioner Mike Slive even hinted earlier this week that he'd like to see teams beef up their nonconference schedules, which could be sort of a tradeoff for teams if the league stays at eight conference games. Regardless, he wants to see more meat on teams' schedules going forward.
So while SEC coaches left Destin Wednesday with an almost unanimous vote on keeping eight league games, their votes might not mean too much in the end. This means a more difficult road to the playoff and the national championship for the league that has won seven straight BCS titles.
Think about it, if the the SEC moves to nine conference games the SEC champion will have to play 10 SEC games and another BCS game before even starting the playoff.
Personally, I'm in favor of all the SEC teams beefing up their schedules. It's just a better product to watch. And the league's new network probably won't want a lull during the season with a weekend of, well, weak opponents littering its lineup.
Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin suggests you can spread conference games throughout the season to ensure that an SEC matchup occurs every weekend.
"I know with television and with everything that becomes important there's a way to maintain that and maybe reconstruct the schedule so that it serves the national need of fans and our television needs and still gives us an opportunity to play in the toughest league in America," Sumlin said.
Makes sense, but if there's a chance to bring in more fans and money by toughening up the schedule, the league will do it. And this is a chance for the league to flex its muscles even more. Sure, the old method has worked, but things change. The SEC took a major step with the first conference championship game in 1992, and this would be another one.
Coaches could get more than they asked for, but they should embrace the challenge should it arise.

All
SEC teams SHOULD play 9 SEC teams and 1 very good OOC team. Look what
Florida did last year. They played Bowling Green the very first game
of the season, then started their SEC season and were the first ones
finished with SEC games by 11/3/12 when they played Missouri. Then they
had the easiest schedule playing La-Lafayette, Jacksonville State and
then FSU to finish out their season. There shouldn't be a problem with
playing 9 SEC teams and 1 good OOC team making 10 tough games and 2 cucakes.

I get it. You are confident in your team and you should be. Saban came along and Bama has been rolling since. What happens when Bama cycles back down (and yes it will happen at some point) I wonder if you'll feel the same way. Why in the world would you want to make it more difficult for the teams of your conference to continue to win championships?

Because this playoff system will force teams to do so in order to get into the championship game.....
