Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -- this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

Whether by the name of historical re-enactors,
living historians or hardcore authentics, the Civil War superfans who
flock to Gettysburg transcend the occasion of the northernmost battle's
150th anniversary. In coverage of the sesquicentennial's opening
weekend, they remain what captivates the attention of the media all over
the world.
"Park
employees already refer to this time of year as the 'high holy days.'
The 150th anniversary has injected just a bit more pomp into the
circumstances. 'This is just the "high holy days" on steroids,' said parks spokeswoman Katie Lawhon, who has worked at Gettysburg for more than 20 years." (L.A. Times)

Demaria, 53, a psychologist from Garden City, said his fascination with
the fervor that drove ordinary citizens to fight for abstract causes
during the Civil War — why, for example, would a white schoolteacher
from Maine fight to abolish slavery in South Carolina? — drew him to
Gettysburg yesterday. 'You
can read about it in histories, but living as they did — sleeping
outside and experiencing how much they sacrificed — makes it much more
emotional,' said Demaria, a member of the 67th New York Volunteers, a re-enactment group in Old Bethpage." (Newsday)

Obama, who arrived in Tanzania on Monday, said his administration has encouraged the Morsi government to “reach out to the opposition and work through these issues in a political process.”
But Obama told reporters, “It’s not the U.S. job to determine what that process is. But what we have said is, ‘Go through processes that are legitimate and observe rule of law.’”

Obama passed up the chance to call on Morsi to step aside, as he did in 2011 when thousands of protesters on the streets of Cairo demanded the resignation of then-President Hosni Mubarak.
The Egyptian military said Monday that it would intervene in the next two days if Morsi and the opposition do not resolve the political crisis, which is threatening the country’s stability and economy.
Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of Cairo over the weekend and marched on the presidential palace, seeking to force out the Islamist leadership. Morsi has made it clear that he doesn't plan to step down, and thousands of Islamists have gathered in support of his 1-year-old government.

Soledad O'Brien has landed at Al Jazeera America, the broadcaster confirmed Monday morning.
O'Brien, who was formerly an anchor at CNN, will become a special correspondent for the new network's flagship primetime show, "America Tonight," and will also produce documentary specials. She is perhaps the highest-profile name to join AJA, which has been on a hiring spree in preparation for its launch in the late summer or early fall.
It's a move that makes sense for O'Brien, who ended her day-to-day job at CNN amidst that network's rebranding. Al Jazeera has promised a less celebrity and politics-focused network, something that jibes with O'Brien's high-brow approach to TV journalism. She has also inked a deal to appear on HBO's "Real Sports," and will continue to produce documentaries for CNN.
In a statement, O'Brien said she looked forward to "beginning a relationship with Al Jazeera America, which has made a commitment to producing quality programming and pursuing underreported stories."
