I
saw my close friend walking across the snow that stretched out as far as we could
see and he told me that he was thinking about the warm feeling that made him smile
remembering how his wife felt with him in there close moments together. I could
only hope that he would stays strong enough to walk himself out of the bitter
cold he was in, and indeed one day be with her again. The War that we were in together
was now a short memory of carnage that were leaving the men we were fighting
with, and against, a bloody mess of hurt men in pain from broken body's, mostly dead,
or dyeing. The rocky hills in North Virginia was a harsh place to fight in because
it was something like disappearing behind a bunch of bushes and rocks that kept
feeling like a lonely place to die in for always a pointless reason. Taking a
hill after a fierce fight only to then leave again, making us wonder why we took
it to begin with at such a human cost.
But now the fighting in Civil War seemed far away as the cold was getting worse
from the wind that is blowing a deadly chill. John kept looking for a break out from it when there were none so he just keep walking looking to see if he could
find a place out of this deep freezing chill. And as his footsteps follow one
behind the other making tracks that kept getting very far behind him. The safety of his person depended on
the strength in his lags that kept taking him forward anywhere out of that deep
bitter cold.
I
was riding my horse just another soldier directing traffic as the
Southern Army convoy of men
and cannon moved through the snow that kept falling down on the men
moving forward towards Appomattox, that were just 10 more miles away. Lee was
going to surrender and everyone was going
home. Just 10 more miles to go.
I
saw John again eating breakfast in the dinner house outside of Tampa
Bay, Florida. We
were so happy to see each other that we just picked up where we
left off. We eat and talked until it was time for him to leave and he asking
me
when do I think that I would be released from the sheriffs custody. I
told him I
was only going back inside the big house traveling from the courthouse
because
I killed a guy who I had an argument with, and was given the bone yard,
death by hanging. We smiled at each other just like before and as he was
walking out the door he told me that he will see me at the house Tom,
when I go home.
