My Candidate For The Best Ex-Boyfriend Of The 1960s and '70s Is Elvis Presley. He Was Well Known To Be Very Thoughtful And Generous Toward Ex-Girlfriends.
As usual, I only read serious and scholarly literature - the latest is a biography of Elvis Presley.
To this day, Presley remains the best selling solo artist, with sales estimates ranging from 600 million to 1 billion, and he also holds the record for most songs charting in Billboard's top 40 — 114.
One of his most popular and iconic movies was Viva Las Vegas which was filmed in 1963 when he was 28 and co-star Ann-Margret was 22.
According to Wikipedia, "The chemistry between the two stars was genuine during filming.
"Presley and Ann-Margret began an affair, and this received considerable attention from movie and music gossip columnists.
"This led to a showdown with Presley's worried girlfriend Priscilla Beaulieu who was back at Graceland.
"In her 1985 book Elvis and Me, Priscilla Presley describes the difficulties she experienced when the gossip columnists erroneously 'announced' that Ann-Margret and Presley had become engaged to be married.
"In her memoir, Ann-Margret refers to Presley as a 'soulmate' who 'captured her heart.'
"Elvis, a 2005 TV miniseries depicts the affair, and Rose McGowan was cast as Ann-Margret. . . .
"Elvis and Priscilla were married in Las Vegas on May 1, 1967. Ann-Margret made a similar commitment a week later when she married actor Roger Smith in the same city. . .
"When she made her first appearance on the Las Vegas stage in June 1967, Elvis sent her a guitar-shaped floral arrangement.
"He continued the practice for all of her Las Vegas openings for the rest of his life."
For the next decade, he continued to send her elaborate presents but his motivation appeared to be friendship rather than romance.
Natalie Wood, Candice Bergen, and Cybill Shepherd made similar observations about Presley and said he was known to be very generous in giving gifts to friends.
"When Ann-Margret opened at the Las Vegas Hilton on August 15, 1977, for the first time in 10 years, there was no flower arrangement, gift or telegram from Elvis. The next morning a phone call from Graceland brought the devastating news.
"Joe Esposito explained it was going to be a madhouse in Memphis for the funeral and advised her not to come. 'We’re coming,' she told him.
"Three months later Elvis’s father and Colonel Parker asked her to host a two-hour Elvis NBC tribute, Memories of Elvis.
"She described it as one of the most 'difficult, wrenching jobs' she had ever undertaken.
"Marty Lacker, the best man at Elvis’s wedding, wrote, 'If Elvis had ended up with Ann-Margret, this whole story might have wound up differently.'
”He needed someone strong enough to get him away from drugs and to save Elvis from himself." Presley was 42 when he died and Ann-Margret is 77 today.
