T.W. - I remember the push and shove of the ani Catholic feeling going around Washington DC and media back in the 1950-60s, but I never took it seriously. I was Catholic and felt like why would my countrymen hate me because I never hated them because of their religious denomination.
I did have a brush with that kind of religious bigotry once thought. How this attractive 18 years old girl who took a shine to me, and we were heading for a close relationship until when we were sitting on her front porch talking when she asks me, "what religion are you"?
"I am a true-blue Catholic who had first and second communion."
Gail, "You can't be Catholic, that is terrible, don't be like that!?"
When she turned and went inside talking to her mother, how their voices were-muffled, as she walked back out and told me its impossible to go on because you are Catholic. I can't marry a Catholic.
I was shocked, answering OK, and walked home saying can you believe that.
