Orgeron circles his top coordinator candidates

LSU's top offensive coordinator target is Carolina Panthers quarterbacks coach Jake Peetz, sources confirmed with the Geaux247 staff. Peetz, who currently works under former LSU passing game coordinator Joe Brady, is in Baton Rouge on Tuesday for a formal interview. He's joined on the interview by former LSU analyst and current Panthers offensive assistant DJ Mangus, who worked alongside Brady and offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger during LSU's 2019 National Championship season. Mangus has an interview for a potential spot as LSU's passing game coordinator, the same role Brady - his longtime friend and coaching partner - occupied in Baton Rouge.

“I have a lot of respect for Joe," Orgeron said. "We asked Joe who could run the offense, and he recommended two guys who are here today. I believe in Joe and what he’s done, and believe in Coach Ensminger. I thought those two guys worked great together two years ago. This year we lost a little bit of it, and it was because of the expertise of Joe. I want to get back to that offense.”

On Thursday, Cincinnati Bearcats defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman will interview for the defensive coordinator job at LSU. Freeman was recently named the 247Sports Defensive Coordinator of the Year for 2020. The up-and-coming coordinator is only 34 years old, but a strong run with the Bearcats has him in line for a handful of other job opportunities.

“I would like to have everyone in place by the time the team gets back, but that might be wishful thinking," Orgeron said. LSU's team's is set to return on Jan. 11. "I just have to get the right guys in. Hopefully the guys we have in this week are the right guys.
