Good morning, Tiger Fans,
You might have noticed that “It’s Game Day!” is missing from today’s salutation. That’s because LSU men’s basketball game against Florida has been postponed due to a combination of positive tests, contact tracing, and subsequent quarantining of individuals within the Florida basketball program. As of now, a make-up date has not been set.
With not much else going on, this seems like a good time to continue breaking down the unofficial LSU football depth chart we began putting together last week. We’ve already covered all of the offensive positions, so today we’ll move to the other side of scrimmage and discuss all the talent LSU’s new defensive staff will have at its disposal. Here are our thoughts on LSU’s front-seven.
DANDYDON’S WAY TOO EARLY LSU DEPTH CHART, continued . . .
Defensive End
52 Ali Gaye 6-6, 262, SR
55 Jarell Cherry 6-2, 277, JR
53 Soni Fonua 6-3, 268, SR
Zavier Carter 6-5, 190, FR
Bryce Langston 6-3, 270. FR

96 Eric Taylor 6-4, 313, SO
Maason Smith 6-6, 312, FR
Defensive Tackle
97 Glen Logan 6-3, 339, SR
94 Joseph Evans 6-1, 319, SO
90 Jacobian Guillory 6-2, 344, SO
Defensive End
46 Andre Anthony 6-3, 255, SR
08 BJ Ojulari 6-2, 230, SO
39 Phillip Webb 6-4, 226, SO
Landon Jackson 6-6, 259
Saivion Jones 6-5, 240
When we reviewed LSU’s defensive line last year at this time, it was absolutely loaded with depth. And it’s a good thing it was, too, since LSU would go on to lose five D-linemen before the season’s end. This year, LSU’s defensive line begins even deeper with every starter returning plus the addition of five-star DT Maason Smith and four other D-line signees. Furthermore, not only will LSU return all of its starters from last year’s team, all four of them will be seniors. I don’t recall LSU ever having as impressive a combination of depth and experience on the defensive line. New LSU defensive line coach Andre Carter must be chomping at the bit to get started with these guys.
Strongside Linebacker (Sam)
23 Micah Baskerville 6-1, 231, SR
Middle Linebacker (Mike)
18 Damone Clark 6-3, 245, SR
Gregg Penn III 6-2, 225, FR
Navonteque Strong 6-2, 220, SO
Weakside Linebacker (Will)
10 Josh White 6-0, 215, SO
34 Antoine Sampah 6-1, 205, SO
58 Jared Small 5-10, 209, SR
59 Desmond Little 6-5, 218, SO
While the defensive line looks awfully strong, the linebacker unit might be the team’s thinnest area. Getting Baskerville and Clark back certainly helps, but there’s not a lot of experience behind them. Josh White began to emerge at the end of last season and will likely be counted on for a much bigger role this year. And Antoine Sampah, a former 4-star Under Armour All-American, has yet to have his time to shine. There’s been a lot of excitement about LSU bringing in Navonteque Strong, the top JUCO middle linebacker in last year’s class, but don’t sleep on 4-star Gregg Penn. He comes from a great program (powerhouse Dematha Catholic School in Hyattsville, Maryland) and will also get a look at middle and strongside linebacker.
In a subsequent report, we’ll cover the secondary, which includes a player who garnered the most votes in yesterday’s poll on impact signees. (More on poll results below.)
