The SEC should be loaded once again in 2021. But, Kirk Herbstreit said it could be more of the same this coming season with the teams at the top.
Herbstreit picked the Alabama Crimson Tide, despite some changes with personnel, to take home the SEC crown and head to the College Football Playoff once again. Alabama went undefeated and won the national championship in 2020.
Herbstreit picked their opponent and even picked a SEC sleeper team for the upcoming regular season when talking on The Herbies, ESPN’s preseason College GameDay preview.
"I learned my lesson a long time ago," Herbstreit said. "Have to see it to believe it kind of thing with Alabama. There's some question marks, but same head coach right? Still got that same head coach down there in Nick Saban. You got a new offensive coordinator, you got a new offensive line coach, they made all these changes...now's the time that they can be vulnerable. Nope, I still have Alabama over Georgia in the SEC Championship, which would put Bama back into the playoff.
“A sleeper, there's a few for me, but I'm gonna say LSU. I keep talking about (Derek Stingley). This is a team that not only had a bad year, they were embarrassed. They were humiliated a year ago. I got to believe there's too much pride on that roster for LSU to go through what they went through last year. They open up with UCLA, and if there's ever a team that needs a win to kind of recalibrate and get their confidence established in 2021 it's LSU and Coach O. And that will not be an easy game against Chip Kelly. I think the Bruins are much better, and that's not a slam dunk if you're an LSU fan."
Alabama and Georgia are the heavy favorites in their respective divisions. In the west, Alabama likely has to deal with Texas A&M as their stiffest competition while LSU, Herbstreit’s sleeper team, and Ole Miss are expected to make some jumps in 2021. The path seems clearer for Georgia in the east division since the Florida Gators had a lot of offensive roster turnover while others like Kentucky and Missouri might not be quite ready to challenge the Bulldogs.
LSU might be due for a bounce back season, but despite winning a national championship in 2019, head coach Ed Orgeron could be on the hot seat, according to CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd. Perhaps Herbstreit picking them as a sleeper team is accurate if the Tigers want to put 2020 in the rearview mirror.
