Ain't There (dere) No More - New Orleans
Schwegmann’s bar prices.
-----
I moved here for a job in 1980, 18 years old, directly from a small town in East Tennessee.
The "locals" that I started working with were devoted to immersing me in the "New Orleans" culture, and I was happily compliant!
One day, soon after I had settled in, they said I should come with them to "make groceries".
We went to the Schwegmann's on Vets in Metairie, even though I was staying in an efficiency apt in Mid-City. They picked me up, so I just went along for the ride.
Walked into the store, and the very FIRST THING I saw was a FULL BAR, with a bartender dressed in a white shirt and black bowtie. It was about 9 AM.
We all walked up to the bar, and we all got drinks. Didn't even card anyone.
Although I was already quite convinced that I had made a GREAT decision to move to New Orleans, this particular circumstance was all the validation I needed to assure myself that I was indeed where I belong.
Still, to this day, I have NEVER questioned that the best thing I ever did in my life was leaving that small town in the Smokies and start a new life in the "Big Easy."

We didn't realize how much we liked Schwegmanns, and now I love the memories of the moments we spent there back in the day

This is awesome! Vivid memories for me with my Grandmother walking through the bar in Schwegmann's on Broad Street after exiting the elevator from parking on the roof when I was about 7 years old.
