Charity Hospital, New Orleans. This was the last of six buildings in which Charity Hospital was housed since its beginnings in 1736 as L’Hospital des Pauvres de la Charité (hospital for the poor). When this Art Deco building, designed by architects Weiss, Dreyfous, and Seiferth, was completed in 1939, it was the second largest hospital in the United States. Its entryways and façade are graced with friezes and reliefs by sculptor Enrique Alférez. The hospital has been closed since its basement and first floor were flooded in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and it has now been replaced by the University Medical Center, a sprawling new hospital complex built nearby at a cost of more than a billion dollars.

I always thought the old building would make great apartments.
