On Halloween night in 1959, a single run in Tiger Stadium became the most famous play in LSU history. 🏈
LSU was the defending national champion, ranked number one, locked in a brutal scoreless standoff with number three Ole Miss. Late in the game, Billy Cannon fielded a bouncing punt around his own eleven-yard line, something coaches always warn against, and took off. He broke seven tackles on an 89-yard sprint through the mud and the noise, weaving and dragging defenders until he crossed the goal line. Tiger Stadium erupted into what old timers still describe as the loudest sound they ever heard. LSU won 7 to 3.
That run sealed the Heisman Trophy for Cannon and turned him into a permanent piece of Louisiana legend. Decades later his life took hard turns, but in this state, he never stopped being the boy from Baton Rouge who ran through an entire team on Halloween night. His number 20 was retired, and the punt return is replayed every single fall like a sacred story.
Some plays stop being sports and become folklore, and this is one of them. Do you remember the first time somebody told you about the Halloween run?
