#new Senate Majority Leader John Thune says the SAVE act is dea*d in the Senate, saying they don't have the votes and won't nuke the filibuster despite direct pressure from President Trump.

He says people need to elect more Republicans in the future to get the SAVE act passed, instead of trying to force the issue now.

Thune made the comments after an amendment to attach voter ID, and proof of citizenship to a funding package failed after four Republicans joined every Democrat to k*ll it.

The amendment, offered by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), would have required  proof of U.S. citizenship to register for federal elections and photo id at polling places.

Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine),

Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska),

Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky), and

Thom Tillis (R-North Carolina) voted no alongside Democrats.

President Trump has made the SAVE America Act a top priority, calling it essential to stop noncitizens from voting and threatening at points not to sign other legislation until it reaches his desk.

Trump has directly told Thune he needs to “be a leader” and get the votes instead of making excuses.

Conservatives who back the bill argue that passing it before the 2026 midterms would shut down vulnerabilities in the system, restore confidence in elections, and drive higher Republican turnout by proving the party delivers on core promises.

Many Republicans are calling Thune a RINO
