There are two men named Dan Sullivan on Alaska's Senate ballot this cycle — and the Justice Department just decided that's not a coincidence.

Federal prosecutors have issued 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐣𝐮𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐩𝐨𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐬 in a probe of Dan J. Sullivan, a candidate with no prior Republican affiliation who switched parties shortly before launching his campaign against sitting GOP Sen. Dan S. Sullivan. He initially tried to register for the ballot as “𝘋𝘢𝘯 𝘚. 𝘚𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘯” — matching the incumbent's own middle initial — before correcting it to “𝘋𝘢𝘯 𝘑.” (Reuters, NBC News).

Investigators are examining potential 𝐰𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐮𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 to deprive Alaskans of a free and fair election, a civil rights violation, over whether the spoiler campaign exists solely to siphon Republican votes and boost Democratic candidate Mary Peltola.

The Alaska Democratic Party and the Peltola campaign have denied any involvement. The grand jury will decide if that denial holds up.
