(SEPTEMBER 8): Israel-UK relations have hit a new low. Israel announced it’s closing the British consulate in East Jerusalem and taking a series of retaliatory steps after the UK unveiled sweeping new sanctions on goods from Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

The move came after UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband told Parliament that violent settler activity in the West Bank amounts to “ethnic cleansing,” carried out with what he called the tacit backing of the Netanyahu government. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar called the accusation “outrageous lies” and announced Israel will also expel British representatives from the Gaza ceasefire monitoring center, bar UK training for Palestinian Authority forces, and ban 12 British nationals — including former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn — from entering the country.

It’s the latest and sharpest escalation in a relationship that has been steadily deteriorating since the UK’s Labour government took office, and comes as France and Canada prepare similar bans on settlement goods.
