3-point stance: BCS' new transparency

September, 20, 2012
By Ivan Maisel | ESPN.com
1. College athletics were more opaque than transparent before the BCS. But the impenetrable formula and the inability to make the format simple began to work against the sport of college football. That is, happily, no longer the case. BCS administrator Bill Hancock updated reporters Wednesday on the discussion at the commissioners’ meeting near Chicago. He explained what they had done, what they hoped to do and concluded each issue by saying, “how it comes out, we don’t know.” That’s smart and refreshing.

2. Another note from the Department of It’s Only Week 4: No. 3 Oregon hasn’t played a defense that could stop anyone, but redshirt freshman quarterback
Marcus Mariota is 10th in the FBS in passing efficiency (180.54). No freshman has finished a season in the top 10 since Sam Bradford of Oklahoma led (176.5) the FBS in 2007. The highest finish by a freshman since then? Kellen Moore of Boise State at 12th (157.12) in 2008. Mariota could be in rare company.

3. I’m sure every coach would kill for this problem. But seriously, between moving the kickoff up five yards and the fact that No. 4 Florida State has allowed one score and No. 1 Alabama two in its first three games, can their kickoff return teams perform their jobs? The Seminoles’
Karlos Williams has returned two kicks for 52 yards; the Tide’s Kevin Norwood has returned one for 22 yards. What happens if they need a big return in a close game? Think about that as Florida State prepares for No. 10 Clemson.

Why is it when Oregon plays ARK ST they play a team that cannot stop anyone, but when a SEC team plays ARK ST it is considered a national semi final and the winning team moves up in the polls?

Why is it when LSU destroys Oregon........ the Duck fans still say their team is superior? When Auburn beats them for the national title.......they whine for ESPN to kiss their butt? Why?
Perhaps the word destroy doesnt make sense to you. As for the whining that would be Saban demanding that the press vote his team into a higher spot. What is so funny is yall would raise a stink if the polls were abused against you, like it has happened before. You failed to address the fact that SEC teams beat ARK ST and move up Oregon beats them(like a good teams does, not in OT LOL) and Oregon simply played a cupcake and should be punished.

ULM #1 they beat a top ten SEC team
What SEC team beat Arkansas State in overtime and moved up? The way I see it Arkansas State hasn't played an SEC team this season. The last time Arkansas State played an SEC team was in 2010 and Auburn won by 26.
I have never seen any article that praised Arkansas State's football team this season and I read every article with SEC links on here. ESPN is biased in favor of the SEC, but you don't need to make up stuff to and show that.
BTW unranked Nebraska beat Arkansas State way more convincingly than Oregon did. Ever taken a second to think about the fact that Oregon might be overrated a bit this season?
Says the guy who said that ARK ST was not worthy of mention, somehow I knew you would say how great ARK ST was.

Do you know what overranked means?

42 points on a team that "cannot stop anyone" is better than 57, 50 at halftime, even SEC math folks know that 50 at half is better than 42 for the entire game
Who cares...IF Oregon keeps winning they will got to the NCG. Then you will see them lose again to another SEC team. . .
Perhaps he is saying giving up 13 points for the entire game is better than 34 for the game.
"Bingo" I swear the ducks are coming home to roost...Because to many sports writers think that the college football fans are fools.

Do ‘breathers’ have a place in today’s game?

Could these really be the good ol’ days?
How could we tell?
In one sense, LSU football fans have nothing to complain about . . . or maybe nothing much to complain about. Other than a glaring lack of a national championship, it’s a Golden Era.
The 63-14 scrambling of Idaho Saturday night was a watershed game of sorts. Not just because it was the national record 40th straight thumping of a non-conference opponent, and not just because it was the 20th consecutive victory in Tiger Stadium.
This was the 30th Tiger game since the 19-17 defeat at the hands of Penn State in the Capital One Bowl at the end of the 2009 season. Since then LSU has gone 27-3 - a 90 percent victory rate over a period of two-plus seasons. Read more...http://www.tigerrag.com/?p=221562

Auburn O-line coach Jeff Grimes: Mighty test awaits against LSU
The Tigers' assistant says LSU will bring a tough defense to Jordan-Hare as he talks Patrick Miller and others Watch video
AUBURN, Alabama – Auburn offensive line coach Jeff Grimes agrees that LSU will present a challenge Saturday night – and he's willing to take that assessment one step farther.

"Challenge is an understatement," he says in this video.

"You don’t see a weak link. They are good everywhere. They are good in the back end. They are good in the middle with their linebackers. They are good up front. I know this, in this league if you don’t handle the four guys up front then what the rest of those guys do doesn’t matter because it’s irrelevant because the play never gets started." GUILBEAU: SEC Behind the Scenes

More than just the trees are ill at Auburn

By GLENN GUILBEAU
Tiger Rag Featured Columnist

Harvey Updyke (allegedly) poisoned the wondrous oak trees at Toomer’s Corner two years ago because he was upset that Auburn was rolling to a national championship after beating his beloved Crimson Tide 28-27 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
He should have left nature alone and just waited.
Since Auburn’s perfect, 14-0, national championship season of 2010, the bloom is off. The Tigers are 9-7 overall and 4-5 in the Southeastern Conference since. Auburn (1-2, 0-1 SEC) had to resort to a gadget play, a Hail Mary, two blocked field goals and a field goal in overtime just to beat Louisiana-Monroe last weekend, 31-28.
Next week, Auburn hosts No. 2 LSU, and it could get ugly because Auburn looks sick.
Call it the curse of 14. Auburn is 14th of 14 teams in the SEC statistics in five major categories - rush defense, scoring offense, total offense, pass offense and pass efficiency. Read more...http://www.tigerrag.com/?p=220932
