LSU Notes: DE Montgomery called 'em out at halftime

BATON ROUGE -- Sam Montgomery's mouth has gotten him in trouble in the past with Louisiana State head football coach Les Miles, who prefers that he not always be so brash. On Saturday, though, Miles let the star defensive end talk at halftime at Auburn University when the 20-point favorite LSU Tigers trailed Auburn 10-9.

"Frankly, at halftime he echoed what we were all thinking," Miles said Monday. "That was, 'Well, we need one of these. We need a fistfight. We need a game where we're challenged. We need a game where we have to outplay them the second half.'"

LSU fought harder in the second half and won 12-10. The Tigers won their previous three games by 41-14, 41-3 and 63-14.

Tinker Town: "Is it the LSU football players, or the coaching staff, that need to sharpen up their skill level? The stress and strain between the college football coaches, players, family and friends, with the football fans is mostly about the skill level of the football team. It has now developed into a never ending television network argument about who had the best college football team with the best players, and coach."

ND-Michigan to end after 2014

Michigan is the first casualty of Notre Dame's new arrangement with the ACC.
The Fighting Irish notified the Wolverines that they are exercising a three-year out in their series contract, meaning the last meeting between the historic rivals will occur in 2014.
Through a Freedom of Information Act request, The Associated Press obtained a letter Tuesday from Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick to Michigan AD David Brandon, canceling the games from 2015 to 2017.

The schools had extended their contract in 2007, taking the series through the 2031 season. But it was on a three-year rolling basis, giving either side the chance to opt out with three years' notice.
Notre Dame and Michigan announced this summer that a two-year break is coming in the 2018 and 2019 campaigns, but that they intended to resume the series in the years following.
"The decision to cancel games in 2015-17 was Notre Dame's and not ours," Brandon said in a release. "We value our annual rivalry with Notre Dame but will have to see what the future holds for any continuation of the series. This cancellation presents new scheduling opportunities for our program and provides a chance to create some new rivalries." BCS expert Brad Edwards looks at the six potential sites that could host the 2015 title game.Tags: Brad Edwards, 2015 Title Game, Cowboys Stadium, Rose Bowl, Suger Bowl
To expedite the process in choosing the site of the national title game on Jan. 12, 2015 that will crown the champion of the Football Bowl Subdivision's first playoff, only six cities will be considered, sources told ESPN on Monday.
The four current BCS bowls -- the Fiesta in Glendale, Ariz., Orange in Miami, Sugar in New Orleans and Rose in Pasadena, Calif. -- along with the Cotton (Arlington, Texas) and Chick-fil-A (Atlanta) bowls will be the only sites that will have the opportunity to host the 2015 title game.
The BCS commissioners originally planned to open the bidding to any city interested in submitting a request for proposal for the title game. But considering the challenges involved with hosting the game, and because it is only 28 months away, the commissioners felt the need to move quickly on naming the site.
A decision is expected to be announced early next year. Read more...http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/8419849/first-national-playoff-finale-2015-limited-6-bid-cities-sources-say

On to LSU
Courtesy: Spiro Morekas, TowsonTigers.com
Release: 09/25/2012

The Towson University Tigers were victorious once again on Homecoming Saturday as they defeated St Francis (Pa.), 46-17. The Tigers fell behind 7-0 in the first quarter, but from there on out it was all Towson. The Tigers scored through the air, on the ground, and with special teams.

It was a record setting day for the Tigers. Sophomore running back
Terrance West, playing in just his 14th game, scored three rushing touchdowns. His 34 career rushing touchdowns pass Jason Corle's 33 to move West into the top career leader in that category. Think about that. West is averaging almost two and a half rushing touchdowns per game for his career. Against the Red Flash on Saturday, he did not play for most of the game. West got hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after his second score, and that did not sit well with head coach Rob Ambrose. Later in the game, center Doug Shaw also was penalized for the same thing. Shaw's night also came to an early end.

Derrick Joseph
returned a kickoff 99 yards on Saturday to tie a Towson record. It was his second 99-yard return; he had one last year against New Hampshire. Joseph's return in 2011 was the first kickoff return for a TD that the Tigers had had since Maurice Sydnor had one against Butler in 1995. I had driven my color commentators crazy for about 10 years by mentioning how long it had been since the Tigers had scored a touchdown on a kickoff return. I also drove Gordy Combs crazy about it. BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - Can you believe what you just saw?
Can you believe they came that close to losing that game?
Can you believe they needed one last defensive stand on the final play to put that team away?
They may still be undefeated, but they must not be as good as everyone thought.
That's what a lot of people have been saying about LSU since Saturday night, since the Tigers swaggered into Jordan-Hare Stadium against struggling Auburn and staggered out with a 12-10 victory. The next day, LSU slipped from second to third in both the AP and USA Today polls. Read more...http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2012/09/dont_dismiss_lsu_because_it_di.html

To tell the truth, college coaches spin the rhetoric

By Dan Wolken, USA TODAY

For most college football coaches, spin is second nature. When they're winning, they try to manage expectations. When they're losing, they try to turn the heat away from themselves.
But no matter what, they always come with a message -- especially on Mondays, when many of them have press conferences to rehash the prior weekend and preview the upcoming week. Of course, what they say isn't always accurate.
And it's our job to point that out. So the idea here every Tuesday will be to take a few comments from press conferences around the country, untangle the spin and give it to you straight. Of course, we'll have a hard time doing a better job than Syracuse's Doug Marrone, whose team is 1-3, talking about his team's sloppy play on the Big East teleconference.

"At the end of the day, and I'm not being a martyr, it's truly on me," Marrone said. "There aren't any excuses I could come up, not would I if I thought there was one. It's not who I am. The responsibility is on me and I'm not doing a good job."

Dandy Don's LSU Sports Report

9/26/12 5:35 am CDT

Good morning, Tiger Fans.
The LSU football team has opened as a 49.5-point favorite over Towson, and I don’t remember the Tigers ever being favored by such a big spread. Towson, a member of the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly 1-AA) and the Colonial Athletic Association, is 2-1 overall following its 46-17 win over St. Francis last week. This will be the first meeting between the two teams and it will also mark the first time LSU has faced a team from the Colonial Athletic Association in football. LSU will enter the game ranked in the top 10 nationally in five categories – rush defense (No. 3 at 56.75), total defense (No. 4 at 199.5), scoring defense (No. 8 at 10.25), pass defense (No. 8 at 142.75) and pass efficiency defense (No. 8 at 92.27 rating), and will likely improve their stats in all categories Saturday night. However, improving stats and covering the spread are not LSU’s main objectives going into this game. Instead, LSU will be focused on correcting mistakes they made last week, especially turning the ball over and committing costly penalties, as they prepare for the balance of the season against much stiffer competition.
Speaking of stiff competition, yesterday it was made official that LSU will open the 2013 season against TCU in the Cowboys Classic in Arlington, Texas. The game will take place on Saturday, August 31 and will be televised by ABC, ESPN or ESPN2. I like the idea of starting the season with this type of competition better than starting with a cupcake win. In my opinion, it forces the team to focus and quickly exposes any weaknesses that might need to be addressed before SEC action. I have a lot of respect for the TCU program and it ought to be a great game.
Last week I posted some stats comparing this year’s Tiger Team to last year’s and I heard from many of you who really appreciated it, so I’ve decided to do it again. Below are stats comparing the 2011 and 2012 teams after four games.
LSU football stats through 4 games
I realize that stats can often be misleading, and that the level of competition through the four games of each season is not the same, but I think the stats above clearly expose the problem areas for this year’s team. The stats I find most concerning are the number of penalties, zed-zone scores, red-zone touchdowns and sacks allowed. I also find it interesting that the run/pass ratio is actually a little less balanced than last season. On the flip side, we can see that this year’s defense is outstanding by looking at points allowed and opponents’ total offense. I welcome your comments on the stats and what they reveal to you.
Before leaving the topic of LSU football, I have some sad news to report. Legendary Tiger tailback Tommy “Trigger” Allen passed away yesterday. I know I speak for the Tiger Nation when I offer my prayers and most sincere condolences to his family. You can view his obituary and express your condolences to the Allen family here
