Dandy Don's LSU Sports Report

Good morning, Tiger Fans.
With yesterday’s 14-6 loss to Florida, LSU suffered its first regular season loss in 19 games, and man was it an ugly one. You know me, I try to keep things positive on this site, but I really don't have much positive to say about yesterday’s game except that the defense looked spectacular in the first half. In the second half, the defense was simply worn out by spending almost the entire half on the field due to an LSU offense that looked as anemic and ineffective as they did back on January 9.

Within minutes of the game’s end, my inbox was filled with messages from Tiger fans eager to blame the loss on Zach Mettenberger, but the problems go much deeper than any one person or position. Last night we saw a banged up offensive line that was beat in the trenches, a running game that was virtually non-existent, a receiving corps that did a poor job of running routes and catching the ball, a team that was penalized eight times for 83 yards, and an offense that successfully converted only one out of 13 third down conversions. Add to that an offensive game plan that lacked creativity and was far too predictable, and it’s easy to see that this was a recipe for disaster. And yes, some of the blame falls on Mettenberger, too, who after the first drive never seemed comfortable and ended the night 11-of-25 with an interception and four sacks.

I also heard from many of you who feel like LSU’s offensive troubles are an indication that having one man as both Offensive Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach needs to be seriously questioned, and I agree.
A few stats from yesterday’s game: Florida gained 22 first downs to LSU’s 8. Florida had 75 offensive plays in the game to only 54 for LSU. Florida gained 176 yards on the ground compared to only 42 for LSU. (LSU only gained 18 yards rushing in the entire second half.) Florida’s time of possession was 37:24 compared to 22:36 for LSU. Greater New Orleans

Kevin Minter's spectacular effort not quite enough for LSU's defense

Randy Rosetta, The Times-Picayune By Randy Rosetta, The Times-Picayune

Gainesville, Fla. -- One long exhale told a lot of the story for LSU middle linebacker Kevin Minter on Saturday.
Try as he might -- and he certainly tried mightily -- Minter couldn't will the No. 4-ranked Tigers past Florida in a 14-6 defeat at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
kevin_minter.jpg
LSU middle linebacker Kevin Minter made 20 tackles, tying for the second most in program history, in the Tigers' 14-6 loss to Florida.Associated Press
Minter was the last player to the postgame interview session and looked like a player who had been through the toughest 60 minutes of his career.
Not without something to show for his hard work, though.
The junior registered an eye-popping 20 tackles in the loss, 17 of those solo stops. His tackle total was the most by a Tiger since Rudy Harmon did it in 1988, and tied for the second most in school history, behind only Al Richardson's 21 tackles vs. South Carolina in 1982. GAME BLOG: LSU vs. Florida

FINAL: Florida 14, LSU 6

By RICHARD FISCHER and HUNT PALMER
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Good afternoon and welcome to The Swamp for LSU’s first day game of the season.
The once thought-to-be-dominant No. 4/3 Tigers (5-0, 1-0) come to Gainesville after losing quite a bit of steam following victories more narrow than the experts thought they should be over Auburn and Towson. The good news: they were indeed victories, and the Tigers enter hostile enemy territory unbeaten. Read more...http://www.tigerrag.com/?p=224302

  3. Brent LeDoux on October 6th, 2012 3:11 pm
1st and goal from the 7 YARD LINE and we end up 4th and gosl from the 5 YARD LINE! No……………we don’t have a problem with play calling.

  4. TigerGumbo on October 6th, 2012 3:28 pm
The first half of the Florida/LSU football game is very hard for my emotional health, I think that I am going to need a new approach at how I view this years LSU tiger football team playing football this year. Are you kidding me?! Two field Goals and no touchdowns 6 to 0 LSU..I am hoping against hope, for better results in this next half of LSU football?

  5. Brent LeDoux on October 6th, 2012 4:43 pm
Offensive Insanity….Doing the same thing OVER AND OVER and expecting a different result. Worst offense in the country due to PLAYCALLING! Keep on making excuses for this pathetic coaching staff (offense only) Chavis can stay. Everyone else gotta go!

It seems once an issue has been identified (Horrible playcalling and a QB that was highly overrated) Les seems to dig in for the rest of the season and keep doing what doesn’t work. It is like he knows well that there is a problem but, he won’t have anybody else tell him what to do. He will do it his way or no way.

there is really bad qb and wr development with the offensive coaches. if you look at the offensive playcalling when jimbo fisher was here vs now, u can see the glaring different and the lack of development of the offensive players and the playcalling is amateur at best. no innovation whatsoever. the o.c. and offense reminds me of fulmer’s offense his last few years at tennessee. no offense but had solid chavis defense. fulmer’s offense couldnt put points on the board. it wasnt till cutcliff went be the o.c. at tennesse did tennessee have an offense to compliment the defense. ultimately though, no offense cost fulmer his job. miles should be thanking chavis for his defense because if it wasnt for chavis, miles wouldnt have a job. better get really good o.c. soon because next year miles could be gone. with this offense, i dont see us beating bama or s.c. and possibly losing to miss st. as well. someone needs to tell miles the slow, always run it, pound it up the middle offense doesnt work in the SEC.

  9. armchair joe on October 6th, 2012 8:57 pm
it aint the big ten miles, that offense doesnt work in the sec.

  10. Mike Stephenson on October 7th, 2012 6:27 am
It’s going to be a long season. O line is weak, QB is overated and of course Les will not pull him for a backup. It was a painful game to watch. I can sum it up in one word “Pathetic”.

83 yards in penalties, 43 yards rushing, 2 fumbles, 1 interception, 11 passes completed—and all the coach has to say is we are ’sick” of the way we played—what about how we were coached(or a lack thereof)

badley19 on October 7th, 2012 11:08 am I’ve got a way to fix the tigers offensive problems…..bring in coach Bobby Petrino as our offensive coordinator and promote coach Stud into the position of chalk board supervisor. Of course you have to rid coach Petrino of his motor scooter and add secretarial duties to coach Stud.
Tinker Town: "The Les Miles no offense problem is solved tiger fans. Ha ha ha lol lol lol."

Quotes and reaction from LSU’s locker room following disappointing loss

By HUNT PALMER
BBI Senior Writer

GAINESVILLE, Fla - It wasn’t completely shocking.
LSU navigated a fairly light schedule in September, earning victories but lacking style points in a big way. Saturday afternoon in the Swamp, every flaw on the squad was exposed as the Gators earned a 14-6 win over the Tigers in front of more than 90,000 in the stands and an entire country on CBS.
The LSU offense went an excruciating 45 minutes of game time without moving the chains, save two penalty aided first downs in the third quarter.
The Tigers ran for just 42 yards and finished with an anemic 200 yards of total offense. Florida, meanwhile, stuck to the new-look power running Game Will Muschamp desires, handing the ball to Mike Gillislee 34 times for 146 yards and two scores. Read more...http://www.tigerrag.com/?p=224572

Les Miles do the right thing and freaking quit. We have had enough of your sorry offense and you are not good enough to be a head coach in the SEC. Go back to OSU. Or better yet I am certian you can get a job selling popcorn at tiger staduim on Saturday nights.

  2. Brent LeDoux on October 6th, 2012 8:39 pm
No, Les, the football team is not sick…………we are sick of YOU and your excuses!

  3. TigerGumbo on October 7th, 2012 2:18 am
    Les Miles can’t coach…

  4. TigerGumbo on October 7th, 2012 5:05 am
It all came together for Steve Spurrier gamecocks football team against the Georgia bulldogs last night on national televised. South Carolina is now one of the best college football teams in our country in 2012. That was indeed a very impressive performance by the South Carolina entire football team. Offense, Defense, and special teams. Now they ( SC ) must come play the furious offense of Les Miles LSU’s fighting tigers in tiger stadium. How do you like those apples?

  5. Brent LeDoux on October 7th, 2012 6:15 am
Bottom Line: I won’t say anything else. I promise. The stats below speak for themselves:

    LSU FLA
    1st Downs 8 22
    Total Yards 200 237
    Passing 158 61
    Rushing 42 176
    Penalties 8-83 6-52
    3rd Down Conversions 1-13 7-14
    4th Down Conversions 1-1 0-0
    Turnovers 3 2
    Possession 22:36 37:24

  6. michiganbengal on October 7th, 2012 7:55 am
I think all of TigerNation should be sick…….Sick of underachieving under this do nothing coach, who can’t gameplan, can’t make adjustments, and can’t deliver a concise straightforward response to any question.
Where’s Michigan when you need them?

  7. michiganbengal on October 7th, 2012 8:11 am
Where is the huge upgrade at QB that we were promised? Mettenberger can’t throw and won’t run. That was the difference late in the game. Driskill was able to convert first downs with runs. JM refused to run even when there were lanes available. Still afraid of the hash marks after the infamous trip over the 38 yard line?

  8. David H Stewart on October 7th, 2012 8:51 am
I was afraid of this. The Gators we more focused and wanted it more than the Tigers. When you get the ball on a turnover at the 7 yard line and don’t score a touchdown, that’s lack of heart and desire. Championship teams have the attitude like South Carolina did playing Georgia. I think South Carolina will win the SEC and BCS National Championships because they want it and have that as a goal. I think we are going to get beat real bad this Saturday in Tiger Stadium when South Carolina comes to town. The SEC is so tough you have to play your “A” game every week and that takes heart and desire. Remember it is a FACT that NOBODY has repeated as SEC Champion since 1998. Our conference has too much talent, there are 6-7 teams for sure that can compete for the championship game every year. I think LSU goes 8-4 or maybe 9-3.

  9. TigerGumbo on October 7th, 2012 11:30 am
“Did you read that the ( Dandy Don’s Report ) said that, “the problems go much deeper than any one person or position.”
Why is the LSU offense still broke, Coach Les Miles?
