There is no chance now that Les Miles leaves LSU for Arkansas

Arkansas reportedly offers Les Miles a five-year deal worth more than $27 million to coach the Razorbacks.

Update: Pete Roussel denies Arkansas offered.
The Arkansas Razorbacks have reportedly offered LSU Tigers head coach Les Miles a five-year, $27.5-million contract to leave LSU and become the head coach at Arkansas, according to the Times-Picayune. The information originally came from a tweet by Sports by Brooks; it's been denied from the Fayetteville side, and the LSU sports information department declined comment when asked.
Earlier, Bruce Feldman weighed in:

From SEC blog Team Speed Kills' analysis:
I'm not sure what Long's play is here. Miles didn't leave LSU for his own alma mater of Michigan, which also happens to be the winningest program in major NCAA football history. I really don't see him leaving Baton Rouge for a job that is, frankly, a step down from the one he has now in the same division. Joe Alleva will always be able to find enough money to keep Miles where he is if that's the central issue, so Long can't pry Miles away with a Godfather offer. It's a bold move, but it's also one that could blow up in his face. If the fan base doesn't like whoever he ends up with or a prime candidate gets snapped up in the meantime, then he'll be seen as having wasted time on this wild goose chase. Plus, now the actual new head coach is not going to be seen as the first choice.

For Miles, there is no incentive to leave. He's pretty well entrenched at LSU, and as I said, he'll get paid. With his team seemingly a perpetual top 10 or so squad every year, he's got things going at roughly as high a level as they get. What reason is there to go to the other half of the Golden Boot to pick up the pieces that Bobby Petrino left behind and John L. Smith scattered to the winds? Not only would Miles instantly become the most hated person in the state of Louisiana, but his image would be tarnished forever as a mercenary only after money.

Dandy Don's LSU Sports Report

Good morning, Tiger Fans.
The hot topic of discussion among Tiger Fans is the rumor of Arkansas offering Les Miles a five-year, $27.5 million contract to coach the Razorbacks. I'll tell you right now that I don't believe Miles will leave. I do believe that Arkansas has reached out to Coach Miles with a whole heck of a lot of money, but I think in the end he will stay put in Tiger country where he seems to have a genuine, well-grounded connection to the team and community. Miles will be holding a previously scheduled press conference today to review the Arkansas game, recap the regular season, and discuss LSU’s bowl résumé. I hope that he will also make a statement about this and nip it in the bud.
Moving on... It was nice hearing from so many of you yesterday about the quarterback comparison chart that I posted. One thing about stats is that they can be interpreted in many different ways, and that was very evident in the comments I received. To some of you, the stats made you long for the days of Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee. To others, the stats told the story of a passing game that hasn’t changed much in terms of efficiency. To many others, including myself, they show a significant movement in a positive direction. Let me explain....
If I look at the stats that compare the entire 2011 and 2012 regular seasons, the thing that jumps out most to me is just how much more passing there was this year. 329 passes were thrown, compared to 249 last year. That 32% increase in the number of passes represents a much more balanced attack between the pass and rush, and I think that is an obvious positive, as is the fact that the Tigers threw for 419 more yards through the same period. To me, the stats begin to look really encouraging when you look at those of Mettenberger’s last four games. During those four games, Mettenberger averaged 267 yards per game, and it’s been a long time since any LSU quarterback has done that. Only once last year did Jarrett Lee throw for more than 180 yards and that was against Mississippi State when he threw for a season-high 213 yards. Jordan Jefferson only broke the 100+ mark two times last season when he threw for 168 yards against Western Kentucky and 208 against Arkansas. Another positive that I take from Mettenberger’s last four games is that during that period only 1-of-66.5 passes resulted in an interception, which is very good and represents a big improvement over his first eight games of the season. Again, a step in the right direction. The biggest negative I take away from the chart is the lack of touchdown passes from Mettenberger, which I think is indicative of LSU’s red-zone troubles this year. That will need to be a major area of emphasis moving forward.
Considering that next year LSU will have a more experienced offensive line and receiving corps, and Mettenberger will have a year of SEC experience under his belt, plus our running game should be stronger than ever with the return of Hill, Blue, Hilliard and possibly Ware and Ford, I think we’ll see a marked improvement on offense. In the coming days or weeks, we’ll speculate a bit on who the Tigers will lose this year and what next year’s team will look like. One thing is certain, with all of the young talent that is returning, and the great recruiting class that LSU is putting together, the future of LSU football is very bright. GoldRing: "Some LSU football fans have expressed their horror over the way Les Miles talks to the general public. The bent out of shape LSU fans seem to feel that Les Miles is a far out person who just about never becomes understandable in what he says to the viewers. And that they really can't find out what he is talking about. Some LSU fans simply think that Les Miles himself does not know what he is talking about. So the mocking and frustration over Les Miles mannerisms plague the LSU football fans. What do you think?"

Florida State defensive coordinator Mark Stoops has agreed to become Kentucky's next head coach.

Stoops replaces Joker Phillips, who was fired after three straight losing seasons. Stoops has been the defensive coordinator at Florida State since 2009 and has been regarded as one of the top defensive coordinators in the game for the past few years.

The Seminoles are currently ranked second nationally in total defense, but it's interesting to see Kentucky go in the defensive direction. The thought was that the Wildcats would go after an up-and-coming offensive mind.

But defense does rule the SEC and if the Wildcats are going to make strides, improving that defense will be key, as the Wildcats ranked 11th in total defense in the SEC this season and 10th last year.

Check back on the SEC blog for more on Stoops' hire.

Talk about it in The Main Board
LSU fans will have to get ready for the Tongan Tiger.

For what is believed to be the first time in the program's storied history LSU will have a player of Tongan heritage on its roster after College of San Mateo (Calif.) offensive guard
Fehoko Fanaika signed a scholarship Thursday with the Tigers.

The LSU visit sealed the deal for Fanaika
"He's a Tiger," said College of San Mateo assistant head coach Tim Tulloch, who plans to fax all of Fanaika's paperwork to LSU on Friday.

More than a month after the start of the national signing period LSU gained its 23rd signee and fourth from an offensive lineman with Fanaika, a 6-foot-6, 340-pounder, ticketed to play guard where he played for the past two years and earned All-American honors.

Fanaika, who graduates from College of San Mateo in July, will arrive at LSU in August for the start of fall camp and have three years to play his two years of eligibility.

"That's still their decision but I think it would be best for him," Tulloch said of his preference to see Fanaika redshirt in 2012. "I think he'll get to phase in and really get to learn the offense and know it instead of having four weeks to know it. That's a tough deal for anyone to try and be up and running at the level of the SEC.

"That's the best conference in the nation and to be up and running in four weeks would be kind of tough for anybody," Tulloch said. "I think it would be good for him in the long run and I think it would be good for LSU in the long run. If he gets to learn it and learn it well I think he can be an all-conference kid two years."

With the signing of most junior college players talk of redshirting is unheard of but in the case of LSU's offensive line, which received a boost with senior Josh Dworaczyk's return for a sixth season, the Tigers will have five players back with starting experience of which three are seniors.

In an earlier interview with TigerBait.com last month Fanaika wasn't opposed to redshirting with the intent of starting his final two seasons.

"They gave me an option to redshirt and I'd most likely redshirt," Fanaika said. "It helps me get used to the speed of the game, catch up on playbook and get ready for the next two years after that. Other schools would let me play right away while LSU gave me a choice. I don't have any problem sitting out."

Tulloch said Fanaika selected LSU over Florida while Hawaii also drew strong consideration.

"It was a really tough decision but when it was all said and done he felt like LSU was the best fit for him," Tulloch said. "He felt comfortable with (offensive line) coach Stud (Greg Studrawa) and felt comfortable with the direction LSU was going. He said it just felt like home."

Fanaika attended Florin High in Sacramento, Calif. and received one scholarship offer from Sacramento State. Fanaika opted for College of San Mateo where he started for the past two seasons, helping his team to an 8-3 record, including a victory in the Bulldog Bowl.

Fanaika said he simply wasn't ready to sign on Feb. 1 and not long thereafter LSU contacted him and offered a scholarship. Studrawa made a visit out to the California campus to meet Fanaika, who agreed to take his fifth and final official visit to the LSU campus two weeks ago.

"We told him not to rush it," Tulloch said. "We said if you don't have a slam dunk thought of something being a perfect fit then you can go ahead and take some time. It's not uncommon for our kids to go past the signing day.

"That's why the visit is so important," Tulloch said. "LSU was an unknown until he got to meet everyone in person. He met coach (Les) Miles, coach Stud and the players. He said he just felt comfortable with the players and coach Stud. You spend the majority of your time with your position coach and strength coach (Tommy Moffitt) and he really liked both of those guys."
