Alabama is nearing football's pantheon

December, 24, 2012

By Edward Aschoff | ESPN.cAlabama is attempting to do what no program has done in the BCS era: win a third national championship and cross the threshold into a dynasty. It has been 15 years since a program last did so. Tom Osborne, dogged for two decades as the coach who couldn't win the big one, led Nebraska to its third big one in four seasons and retired as the Cornhuskers coach.

And now Nick Saban has brought the Crimson Tide to the precipice of matching Nebraska. No. 2 Alabama, with a defeat of No. 1 Notre Dame in the Discover BCS National Championship on Jan. 7, would become the first team to win a third national title since the BCS began in 1999.

That third crystal football is the key that will unlock the door to the pantheon of college football. We have identified eight dynasties that have ruled the sport in the modern era (beginning in 1936 with the Associated Press poll, the most widely accepted measure of a champion in the pre-BCS era). By happy accident, the dynasties spaced themselves apart, arriving at the rate of one per decade until the onset of the BCS.

Ivan also took some time to discuss Alabama's run and other college football dynasties with fellow ESPN colleague Mark Schlabach in this video.

The 2012 Crimson tide football team is going to beat the Notre Dame fighting Irish very handedly. Because this Notre Dame offense really do not have the ability to maintain ball control. Notre Dame is going to get beat down, because of too many three and out. By the time of the fourth quarter Notre Dame's defense will of course be to tired to hold Alabama back...Final score - Alabama 42, Notre Dame 6.

This is to all you Sec fans who think Sec is Big Boy Football. Well here we go I'll say my piece. Why don't the Sec teams come up North here and play . Come up here and play when the weather is 5,10,15, and 20 degrees. Have you ever really truly gotten hit when it's that cold out ?Trust me it don't feel good . Have you ever been thrown down on frozen turf. The turf is literally ice. But I guess you all wouldn't know about that because you all play " Big Boy Football in the South". It would be n...more
Peace...not piece...NOT a ND grad by chance?
WOW......diarrhea of the iPhone.
As for the "north thing"....do us all a fuc kin favor will ya.....come down here and move your bit ch a s s aunt Myrna and Uncle Sal back up north, please so they'll stop bit chin about the heat....thank you much....
I forgot a question mark to.lol
You forgot to make a valid point genius.
Is that the argument we're going to hear if ND loses? The weather? Funny that it's only Midwest (morons) fans that complain about the weather and only in college football. You don't see Indianapolis Colts fans complaining about the weather. Why? Because their team plays in a dome and in the AFC South!!!! Nope, it's only when they need a reason to justify their losing do they resort to the weather factor.
I have played when it was -4...it is actually more comfortable than playing in the heat and humidity...ON the field, that is...off the field, no.

FISCHER: Outside the Box|

LSU first among better teams the SEC will send to the Chick-fil-A Bowl

By RICHARD FISCHER
Tiger Rag Associate Editor

Like many of you, I’m sure, LSU’s announcement to the Chick-fil-A Bowl was a disappointing - yet not totally surprising - turn of events.
That’s unfortunate considering LSU finished 10-2, eighth in the BCS and beat two conference opponents that got selected over the Tigers for “more prestigious” bowls.

But rather than sulk in the inadequacies of what’s perceived as a lower bowl - one that Auburn actually won last year. Auburn! - maybe this is the start of an interesting phenomenon of unintended consequences that could actually buoy the Chick-fil-A Bowl into a slightly higher stratosphere of prestige for two years and possibly longer.
Let me explain.

With 14 teams in the arms-racing SEC and just eight conference games played, teams with 12, 11, 10 and nine regular-season wins is bound to happen more often than before. Six squads finished 10-2 or better this season. Because the SEC’s dominance over other leagues wasn’t appreciably better in 2012 than in recent years (that is: the league’s best teams have run the table in non-conference games consistently in the past decade. Not just this year), you’ve gotta look at the conference records to see how we got to that milestone. All of those six teams had two losses or fewer in SEC play. That hasn’t happened since 1983 when teams played just six conference games (and didn’t play roughly the same percentage of teams in the then 10-team league. See a trend here?).

In short, because SEC teams play each other less frequently than before, the best of the bunch will have fewer games against each other, and will, in turn, lose less frequently. It’s simple math.

That unintended consequence (or possibly intended consequence from the brilliant mind of Mike Slive) has resulted in an unprecedented six teams in the final Top-10 of the BCS. That also means there’s five spots in “prestigious” SEC bowls consisting of two BCS slots, the Capital One, Cotton and Outback Bowls.

And what-da-ya-know, LSU - one of the best teams in the country by any stretch - got left out of the party and relegated to the Chick-fil-A Bowl. That’s how the SEC’s side of the bowl in Atlanta looks more prestigious this time around. Read more...http://www.tigerrag.com/?p=237132

WORSHAM: On the Ball

LSU will live or die with Miles

By CODY WORSHAM
Tiger Rag Editor

College football’s schedule between conference championship week and bowl season may be empty, but this year - as in almost every other one - that period has been full of action.

Saturday’s weekly games on the field are, for a brief period of time, simply replaced by games off the field. Only now, it’s the coaches, not the players, doing the playing.
The NCAA coaching carousel spun into its annual whirlwind frenzy over the last two weeks, with the SEC the center of college football’s centripetal forces. The winds of change brought Mark Stoops from Florida State (where he was defensive coordinator) to Kentucky, Bret Bielema from Wisconsin to Arkansas, and Gus Malzahn from Arkansas State to Auburn.

But with the carousel in full motion, many dizzy spectators let the memory of an earlier rumor regarding a coach changing locations fade into oblivion.
Though it sparked a media storm during its short time in the limelight, the story of Les Miles’ reported mutual interest in the Arkansas job was all but forgotten after the Tiger head coach signed a contract extension and agreed to a raise of an undisclosed sum in the last week of November.

The deal included a two-year extension from 2017 to 2019, with an unconfirmed raise from $3.75 million to $4.3 million per season. That number, reported by the AP as disclosed from an anonymous source, would make Miles the fifth-highest paid coach in college football, surpassing Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz for that spot.

Lucrative as it was, the timing of the deal was equally newsworthy, as just the day prior, news leaked of a reported five-year, $27.5 million offer from Arkansas, which would have made Miles college football’s highest paid coach.
Miles admitted to discussing the job with Arkansas but denied that there was a specific offer on the table.

”I have great respect for [Arkansas] AD [Jeff Long], a college friend of mine,” Miles said. ”My talks were very preliminary. They fell far short of being serious. I can tell you that this Miles family is awfully comfortable in southern Louisiana. I think home is what we call this place.” Read more...http://www.tigerrag.com/?p=237182
