Dandy Don's LSU Sports Report
Good morning, Tiger Fans. I hope all of you had a great weekend.
Tiger fans who follow recruiting will be anxiously awaiting an announcement by 5-star ATH Rickey Seals-Jones this morning at 10 CT. The 6-5, two-sport athlete (football and basketball) will be deciding between Texas A&M and LSU. Seals-Jones would be a huge get for the Tigers and could step in and play right away, but many are predicting that he will choose to stay close to home and decide to join Johnny Heisman and Texas A&M. He will make his announcement this morning at his school, and I'll be monitoring the situation. As soon as word breaks, those of you who follow @DandyDonLSU on Twitter will know.
While on the topic of recruiting, here's a quick look at LSU’s 24 current commitments. 11 of the 24 are from the state of Louisiana, while 13 are from out-of-state. The 11 in-state players include nine of the top-10 prospects on our list of Top Louisiana Football Prospects for 2013, and the only player in our top-10 who is not currently committed to LSU is No. 1 Kendell Beckwith who will decide between LSU and Alabama. As I've said before, I feel good about LSU's chances with Beckwith, but it's far from a done deal. It sure would be great to land all of the top-10 prospects in the state.
Of LSU’s 13 out-of-state commitments, the most highly-profiled recruits are: offensive lineman Ethan Pocic (6'6", 280, Lemont, IL), defensive end Frank Herron (6'4", 236, Memphis, TN), and quarterbacks Anthony Jennings (6'2", 202, Marietta, GA) and Hayden Rettig (6'4", 210, Los Angeles, CA). The fact that LSU is able to attract high-profile national recruits from as far away as California speaks volumes to the recent success of LSU's football program and the recruiting efforts of the coaching staff.
LSU’s recruiting class is currently ranked 6th in Rivals team rankings (they list LSU as having 22 commitments, not counting F. Fanaika and A. Johnson), 6th in Scout (they list 24 commitments as I do), and 7th by 247 sports (they list 23 commitments, including Johnson but not Fanaika). At this point I have Fanaika and Johnson both listed as members of the 2013 class, but they could end up counting towards 2012. Tomorrow I'll give you my thoughts on LSU's remaining targets, which now include Rueban Foster who has withdrawn his commitment to Auburn, and Cethan Carter of Rummel who really saw his stock rise during the LHSAA playoffs.
Later this week we will begin to turn our attention to the upcoming Chick-fil-A Bowl between the Tigers of LSU and Clemson. I will be working on a page of things to do and see in Atlanta for those of you planning on making the trip, so if you're familiar with the area and have information to share please let me know. During the week I will also be updating our ticket exchange page and list of LSU Alumni view-in locations for the game. Read more...http://www.dandydon.
