Tinker Town: "Holy cow, the hypocrisy of some of these head college football coaches are truly terrible. I don't think that I would envoy going fishing with a guy like that. Maybe the News Media can keep feeling good about Chip Kelly, but I can't. I like loyalty in a person, so that leaves him out."

Phil McConkey has apparently been waiting to air his grievances for quite some time.
The former Giants wide receiver offered his take on the 1987 NFL strike, the NFLPA, Gene Upshaw and Drew Brees during an appearance on WFAN. McConkey said the Giants had health benefits and severance pay among the top of their gripes in 1987, with free agency the lowest priority. McConkey thinks the NFLPA’s concentration on free agency was a power move from Upshaw.
“I remember thinking to myself, ‘Are we that different than [other teams]?’” McConkey said. “I don’t think so. No, we weren’t. And what it was, was Gene Upshaw wanted to create favor with the top couple percent of guys in the league so he could stay in power, make all that money.”
McConkey regrets the 1987 strike because they failed to take care of former players. He takes issue with Drew Brees for the same reason. Back in 2009 Brees blasted former players saying it was their fault for being broke. Brees said many players made bad business decisions, collected their pensions early and never got another job.
“All [the strike] benefited were some of the guys of today,” McConkey said. “There are some guys today that have absolutely no clue and that run their mouths. And Drew Brees is one of them. I know he’s canonized and people think he’s great. If he got in front of a group of ex-players, I don’t know what would happen.”
McConkey played with the Giants from 1984-1988 with a brief lay over in Green Bay during the 1986 season. He also played with the Cardinals and Chargers during his six-year career.

Dandy Don's LSU Sports Report
Good morning, Tiger Fans,
LSU has posted its updated football roster and in it were a few notable absences and additions. The additions include those members of this year’s recruiting class who have already enrolled early - Ethan Pocic, Christian LaCouture, John Diarse, Anthony Jennings, Logan Stokes and Fehoko Fanaika. Absent from the roster are projected early enrollees Avery Johnson and Hayden Rettig. Both players are still waiting on the NCAA Clearinghouse to approve their academic standing. I've heard that Rettig's grades are not the issue, but rather there was just a paperwork delay and everything will be fine.
I truly don’t believe you have to worry about this becoming a Gunner Kiel type deal. Johnson is awaiting a test score and remains confident that he will be in good standing. Other absences that caught my eye include Chris Davenport, Luke Muncie, Paul Turner, Jared Randall, Dexter Alexander and Cleveland Davis, and my assumption is that all of these will be transferring. The only one of these that comes as a surprise to me is Muncie, but with all of the young talented linebackers on the roster he probably feared falling to the back of the depth chart.
In less than two months the LSU football team will return to the field for the start of spring practice, and I can hardly wait. LSU has not yet released the entire spring practice schedule, but they did announce that it will start on March 14 and will culminate with the L-Club Spring Game in Tiger Stadium on Saturday, April 20. I hope a lot of you will mark your calendars and make plans to attend.
While you’re marking your calendars, keep the following upcoming dates in mind:
National Signing Day - Wednesday, February 6
Gridiron Club Recruiting Bash - Wednesday, February 6 (INFO)
LSU Baseball First Pitch Banquet - Thursday, February 7 (INFO)
LSU Baseball Season Opener vs. Maryland - Friday, February 15
Start of Spring Football Practice - March 14, 2013
L-Club Spring Game in Tiger Stadium - Saturday, April 20
In recruiting news, I have confirmed that LSU coach Brick Haley travelled to Georgia yesterday to meet with star recruit Robert Nkemdiche. LSU is still in a very tight race with Ole Miss for Nkemdiche’s signature, despite reports that he has decided to visit Florida. As of now, I have not been able to confirm the date for Nkemdiche’s official visit to LSU, but I am hearing rumblings that he and his teammate, David Kamara (CB, 5'11, 183), will both be visiting LSU together on February 2, the final weekend before signing day (I hope to confirm this today), and that sounds ideal to me. Stay tuned, Tiger Fans, this could really make for an exciting finish to this LSU recruiting class.
A few other recruiting tid-bits: 1) Last week when Scout updated their player rankings they upgraded LSU commitment Greg Gilmore to 5-star status. Likewise, when 247 updated their rankings, they gave LSU commitment TréDavious White a 5th star. 2) Former LSU TE target Josh McNeil was not able to qualify and will go the JUCO route. 3) LSU is working on scheduling an in-home visit with Holy Cross wide receiver Kevin Spears this week prior to his official visit this weekend. Spears has been offered a scholarship to LSU and is very excited about the offer. Read more...http://www.dandydon.

Living A Life Defined By An Undefinable King
NO.
Posted on January 16, 2013
8A hot tear rolled down my cheek as I worked to straighten my twisted frown and fake a shred of composure. I had told myself I wasn’t going to cry.
I saw a wince dance across Coach Miles’ face as his eyes began to redden, as well. I stared into the watering gaze of a man who saw glimpses of his own daughter in my eyes. A man who recognized there was going to be no easy way to deliver any verdict.
It had been 18 months since the day I felt a stirring in my heart to begin an uphill, unexpected journey. I wanted my life to matter. Not just in the big-picture, but on a day-to-day basis. I was tired of living comfortably and making safe decisions. I wanted to risk it all. I wanted to have an impact. I wanted to live boldly. In asking God how He planned for me to do so, I received an unexpected answer.
Football.
There’s hardly a sports tv network, radio station, or social media site that hasn’t covered bits and pieces of my story since the day a few reporters caught me training with the football team at the indoor facility. We had worked so hard to keep my endeavor under wraps. For months and months I had trained–in conjunction with training and competing through my senior soccer season at LSU–with the permission and encouragement of the LSU Football coaches, the guidance of the players, and the care of the trainers. But 6 months into my preparation the cat was out of the bag, and the fire-storm commenced.
With the media attention came the interest. With the interest came the divided opinion. With the divided opinion came every sports-lover’s overwhelming and adamant input into my motives, my ability, my strengths, my weaknesses, my intentions, my faith, my past, my present, my future, and the fact that I had a sports bra strapped to my chest rather than a jock strap between my thighs. In conjunction with the LSU Athletic Administration crew, we worked to hyper-selectively pick through hundreds and hundreds of media requests to handle the necessary evil of addressing the endeavor publicly.
We agreed on a handful of outlets and I gave a few interviews, then got back to work. From that point forward, media stations aired, re-aired and shared my story and the nation began to pick apart, evaluate, and dig deeper into all they were convinced they knew about “Mo Isom: the girl trying to play football at LSU”. All the while, Mo Isom, the girl trying to play football at LSU, was simply doing just that. Warmly accepted and gradually respected by the 100+ young men who suit up on Saturday nights.
Practicing and perfecting a newly-learned kicking form. Studying the game and studying the quirks of the specialist position. I think the hype of the college football culture in our country often blinds people to the reality that we are just a bunch of kids–navigating our way through college classes, fumbling through the highs and lows of relationships, and ultimately playing the sports we love for the schools we’re awfully proud to represent. I fit right in with my gridiron brothers–there was nothing unique or outrageous that divided us. We were all athletes working our hardest to push ourselves beyond the limit of “normal”. My pursuit of a football career was no different. Read more...http://moisom.com/

Top 100 college football games of 2012 countdown: The Top 10
Mike Zarrilli...and 15 seconds later, the game was tied when Zack Hitchens took a fumble 22 yards for a score. But we were just getting started. NIU needed only 90 seconds to score and take a 34-27 lead, but Kent State responded again. Keith found Matthew Hurdle for 11 yards on third-and-10, Chris Humphrey for seven yards on third-and-3 and, with 44 seconds left, Tim Erjeavec for a 19-yard touchdown on third-and-7. In overtime, Kent State nearly lost a fumble on its opening possession following an ill-advised trick play from the NIU 7, both teams exchanged field goals, and the game finally ended when, down a touchdown, Keith threw an interception to Demetrius Stone on fourth-and-8 in the second OT. A day later, NIU found out it was going to the Orange Bowl. See video and read more...http://www.sbnation.
