Dandy Don's LSU Sports Report
Good morning, Tiger Fans,
It looks like the number of Tigers leaving early for the NFL draft is now up to eight, as Sam Montgomery and Benny Logan have reportedly decided to forego their senior seasons. These two, plus Kevin Minter, Eric Reid, Tharold Simon and Barkevious Mingo, bring the total number of junior defensive players leaving early to six. So far, the only early departure on the offensive side of the ball is Spencer Ware, although Chris Faulk and Michael Ford are still contemplating the idea. Punter Brad Wing also announced last week that he will be leaving.
With Mingo and Montgomery leaving early, and Lavar Edwards graduating, the Tigers will not have any returning starters at the defensive end position, and it will be interesting to see who fills their shoes. Potential candidates include Jermauria Rasco, Justin Maclin, Jordan Allen, Danielle Hunter and at least four very good incoming freshmen in Kendell Beckwith, Frank Herron, Michael Patterson and Lewis Neal. I say “at least” because I have heard from a very reliable source that LSU is still very much in the picture for the nation's No. 1 prospect in Robert Nkemdiche. I still give Ole Miss a slight lean because Nkemdiche’s mother would very much like for her two sons to play on the same team, but I also know that Robert is really big on LSU.
Once the NFL’s deadline for declaring (Jan. 15) and National Signing Day (Feb. 6) pass, I will update our depth chart so we’ll have a better idea of exactly what next year's team will look like. With all of the early departures, the Tigers will be young, but very talented, on defense. On offense, the Tigers should be much more experienced with Mettenberger in his second year as starting quarterback, Jeremy Hill with a solid year of play under his belt, an offensive line that won’t be nearly as young on the right side and will hopefully include senior Chris Faulk, and a receiving corps that returns all of its starters plus redshirt freshman Travin Dural who missed this year with a knee injury, as well as a slough of talented incoming freshmen.
Speaking of LSU's offense, last week I conducted a poll asking you, “What is the biggest problem, or problems, with LSU’s Offense,” and it’s time to reveal the results. Of the 9,103 votes cast, “Coaching” received the most votes at 65.95%, followed by “Quarterback Play” at 16.53%, “Execution” at 11.03%, and “Injury and Attrition” at 5.71%. As expected, virtually no one chose “Talent” as it received only 0.97% of the votes. Personally, I agree with the poll results in that I think the problems were due to a combination of factors, with coaching being the most significant. As I've said before, my problem is not with Coach Miles as head coach, but rather with the idea of one man holding the dual role of offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Like many of you that I’ve heard from, I'd like to see Coach Miles go out and conduct a national search for a top offensive coordinator, and then give him enough input in running the offense to bring about a change. With all of the early departures on defense, and with Brad Wing and Drew Alleman leaving on special teams, it could be tougher for LSU to continue to succeed at a high level with the offensive numbers it has had the last three seasons. A day that was widely expected arrived for the LSU football program on Friday. There was still a jolting feel to it, though.
One day after linebacker Kevin Minter announced that he was headed to the NFL draft, four other Tigers followed the same path. Safety Eric Reid and cornerback Tharold Simon got the ball rolling, and running back and punter Brad Wing followed suit as the restructuring of the LSU roster gained an early head of steam.
Reid and Simon leave two more holes on a defense that will likely wind up looking vastly different next fall. Besides those two and Minter, LSU is expected to lose ends Barkevious Mingo and Sam Montgomery, and indications are that Bennie Logan is leaning towards an early exit as well. Seniors Josh Downs and Lavar Edwards also depart.
Tharold Simon, left, Eric Reid, center, and Spencer Ware Ware has vascilated between starting and not, with his role fading since a one-game suspension last season for reportedly failing a drug test. The powerful 5-foot-11, 225-pound back still maintained a key role for the offense and finished his junior season with 367 rushing yards and 18 receptions for 230 yards.
