Lsu Tigers - Vengeance

Tinker:

This 2013 college football season is developing into a wide open chance for a championship for most anyone of the front running football teams playing college football. Oregon, Alabama, Ohio State, Texas A&M, Georgia, Florida, Florida State, Clemson. Notre Dame, South Carolina, Louisville, LSU, or some other college teams.

College graduation rate has always changed what we college football fans can expect in the next college football season. And now the juniors football players who entered  into the NFL draft has further thinned out the ability of the college champions to stay number 1. The back to back, to back, chances of repeating like that is simply betting against the house odds, not very likely. What is likely is that you or I can't see the forest for the trees this college football season because of all the best college football players who have left.

I think that the NFL big money is about to eat its own better interests by depleting the talent of the college football teams around the country. I do not see the upside of a college football team losing their star college football players, before graduation. No I feel like we the college football fans are getting short changed. How could losing your star QB in his junior year to pro football have a up side for your favorite college football team?

Everyone has limitations even college football fans. The effect of depleting the college football talent by taking junior along with the seniors into pro football feel like bad news to me. This raiding of college football players by the NFL can only go two ways, neither one of which is good for college football. Ether making the front runner even more so, or taking the magic out of the college football teams victory. Not beating the best college football players who play the game only serve to devalue the quality of the college football game, hurting the enthusiasm of the college football fans, and that of course is hurting college football.

What next semi professional football
leagues bypassing the college football game all together - like baseball?

SEC defensive coordinators cashing in

March, 11, 2013
PM ET

By Chris Low | ESPN.com
The SEC will have six new defensive coordinators in 2013, which includes a couple of coaches who were promoted.

D.J. Durkin was promoted at Florida after serving as linebackers coach and special teams coordinator the past three years. Geoff Collins was promoted at Mississippi State to run the defense. He was co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach the past two years for the Bulldogs.

When you survey the lineup of defensive coordinators in the SEC, it’s a reminder of how important defense is in this league.

During the SEC’s streak of seven straight national championships, only once has the team winning the title finished outside the top 10 nationally in total defense (Auburn was 60th in 2010).

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that SEC schools pay top dollar for their defensive coordinators. In fact, 10 of the 14 are scheduled to make $500,000 or more next season.

Included in that group are three of the four newcomers, although Auburn’s Ellis Johnson is hardly new to the SEC. Johnson, who will earn $800,000 on the Plains, has made previous stops at Alabama, Mississippi State and South Carolina as defensive coordinator.

Arkansas’ Chris Ash is set to earn $550,000 and Kentucky’s D.J. Elliot $500,000.

Currently, the highest-paid defensive coordinator in the SEC is LSU’s John Chavis, who’s scheduled to make $1.1 million in 2013.

However, look for Alabama’s Kirby Smart to get a bump from the $950,000 he made last season and join Chavis in the $1 million-plus club.

South Carolina’s Lorenzo Ward was recently given a new three-year deal that will pay him $650,000 per year.

Also, Texas A&M’s Mark Snyder is in line to get a significant raise from the $500,000 he made last season. His name came up in a couple of head coaching searches this past December, including Kent State.

Below is a look at the reported salary figures for the SEC defensive coordinators. Vanderbilt’s Bob Shoop isn’t listed because Vanderbilt is a private institution and doesn’t release salary information:

  • LSU’s John Chavis $1.1 million
  • Alabama’s Kirby Smart $950,000
  • Georgia’s Todd Grantham $850,000
  • Auburn’s Ellis Johnson $800,000
  • South Carolina’s Lorenzo Ward $650,000
  • Arkansas’ Chris Ash $550,000
  • Missouri’s Dave Steckel $550,000
  • Ole Miss’ Dave Wommack $550,000
  • Texas A&M’s Mark Snyder $500,000
  • Kentucky’s D.J. Eliot $500,000
  • Florida’s D.J. Durkin $490,000
  • Tennessee’s John Jancek $470,000
  • Mississippi State’s Geoff Collins $325,000

Rashard Robinson commits to Tigers

Robinson’s pledge gives Tigers 22

By scott rabalais
Advocate sportswriter

The Pompano Beach Blanche Ely pipeline is flowing for LSU once again, just in time to cap a hectic recruiting month of July for the Tigers.

Cornerback/athlete Rashard Robinson committed to the Tigers on Tuesday during a visit to the campus, becoming the 22nd pledge to LSU’s Class of 2013 and its third recruit since 2008 from the Florida high school.

Robinson follows former LSU All-American and current Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson and his younger brother, wide receiver Avery Johnson, who is a member of the Tigers’ incoming recruiting class. Johnson personally tweeted out the news of his former and future teammate’s commitment Tuesday evening.

According to 24/7 Sports, Robinson was at LSU for a football camp two weeks ago, then returned with his family on Tuesday for an unofficial visit, during which he gave coach Les Miles his commitment.

Among the major recruiting services, 24/7 is the highest on Robinson, ranking him as the nation’s No. 231 prospect on its national Top 247 list. It also rates him as the nation’s No. 16 cornerback prospect and No. 32 prospect in Florida for 2013.

Robinson got four stars from Rivals, which ranks him the nation’s No. 24 cornerback prospect and No. 51 in Florida. Scout.com rates Robinson as the No. 30 cornerback prospect and ESPN.com lists him as the No. 68 cornerback prospect and No. 99 in Florida.

Rivals and 24/7 give Robinson four stars, while ESPN and Scout give him three.

Robinson’s commitment, LSU’s 15th from a four-star prospect, keeps the Tigers’s class entrenched at No. 4 nationally according to Rivals, behind only USC, Michigan and Florida. Scout has LSU at No. 7 (without Robinson), while 24/7 has the Tigers at No. 10. ESPN.com, which last updated its team rankings Thursday, has LSU at No. 11.

Robinson’s commitment caps off the most active month for LSU recruiting this year.

The Tigers picked up a total of five pledges for 2013 in July, also landing Lake Charles Barbe tight end DeSean Smith (6-4, 225), Wilson (N.C.) Hunt defensive end Lewis Neal (6-1, 230), Destrehan athlete prospect Rickey Jefferson (6-0, 190), and Lindale (Ga.) Pepperell offensive lineman Andy Dodd (6-4, 315).

The Tigers also received three commitments for the Class of 2014 in July from Ponte Vedra Beach (Fla.) Nease linebacker Kain Daub (6-3, 227), Houston Alief Taylor defensive back Chris Hardeman (5-9, 180) and Woodville (Miss.) Wilkinson County athlete prospect Devin Voorhies (6-1, 185).

The Tigers also made national waves in July with news of their scholarship offer to Dylan Moses, a rising eighth-grader at University Lab School, after the 6-foot-tall 14-year-old ran an eye-turning 4.46 40-yard dash at LSU’s football camp.

Cameron Robinson Talks About LSU-Alabama Battle   (Posted on 3/12/13 at 12:49 p.m.)

LINK

quote:

Robinson and LSU offensive line coach Greg Studwara have developed a good relationship; Robinson also had the same type of relationship with former Alabama offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland before Stoutland left Alabama last month to take the same position with the Philadelphia Eagles. "I'm being recruited by Coach Stud, but I talk to pretty much the whole coaching staff every time I talk to them," Robinson said. "I love LSU. Every time I go down there it's like I'm going home. It's such a family atmosphere." Robinson added that he has talked "two or three times" with new LSU offensive coordinator Cam Cameron. "He just told me that with their pro-style offense that they are going to run, they need a prototypical left tackle and he thinks I fit that mold perfectly," Robinson said. "I look forward to talking to him a little bit more." Last weekend, Robinson was scheduled to go to Tuscaloosa and meet with Coach Nick Saban and new offensive line coach Mario Cristobal but opted to stay in Monroe for the Class 5A boys championship game between Ouachita Parish (Robinson's former school) and Scotlandville. Robinson said he has yet to reschedule the visit to Alabama but intends to do so soon. He needs to develop a better relationship with Cristobal as well as new Crimson Tide wide receivers coach Billy Napier, he said. Stoutland and Mike Groh, the Tide's former wide receivers coach who was hired by the Chicago Bears last month, were recruiting Robinson at Alabama. "It's almost identical to Baton Rouge when I go to Tuscaloosa," Robinson said. "The fan base is crazy." Fans will have to wait a while to find our where Robinson is headed, however. He said it's likely he would announce his decision during the Under Armour All-American Game in January. Ultimately, Robinson said, the decision will come down to wherever he feels more comfortable on and off the field.

I think that Robinson is coming to LSU and is looking at Alabama, but in the end, it will be LSU. He is at West Monroe, values feeling comfortable, Alabama lost the guys recruiting him, and he is not really eager to get over there yet.

Now, things could change, but I think that things are looking good right now for both Robinson and Fournette.

Buckeyes looking for leaders in spring practices

March 4, 2013 3:01 PM ET

(Eds: Updates. With AP Photos.)
By RUSTY MILLER
AP Sports Writer

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Most of the most notable players from a team that went 12-0 last season are back for Ohio State in 2013.

Yet when spring practice begins on Tuesday, second-year coach Urban Meyer will still be searching for leaders.

The players who set the pace for last year's perfect record weren't necessarily the stars. Defensive end John Simon was, but more of them were like Zach Boren, who split time between linebacker and fullback. They took ownership of the Buckeyes and helped erase the memories of a seven-loss season in 2011.

"That's a huge void," Meyer said after the season about the departing seniors. "We're in the evaluation phase of who can fill those roles. Make no doubt about it now, that that was a huge part of a successful season."

So even though the Buckeyes welcome back Sports Illustrated cover boy Braxton Miller, a junior quarterback already trumpeted as a Heisman Trophy contender, along with running back Carlos Hyde, linebacker Ryan Shazier and cornerback Bradley Roby, Meyer will be wondering what players will pick up the slack in the leadership depart.

Here are some frequently-asked questions by Ohio State fans, and a guess at some answers, as the Buckeyes begin their spring workouts.

What's the team's strength? Since only four of the players listed on the two-deep offensive depth chart for the season-ending win against Michigan, was a senior, it stands to reason that the offense will be ahead of the defense.

The only losses are TE Jake Stoneburner, RT Reid Fragel and FBs Boren and Adam Homan. That leaves a plethora of quality players on that side of the ball: Miller, Hyde, receivers Corey Brown and Devin Smith and linemen Jack Mewhort, Andrew Norwell, Corey Linsley and Marcus Hall.

Where are the biggest holes? Without question on the defensive line. Simon, Garrett Goebel and Nathan Williams, three vocal leaders, were seniors who have moved on. On top of that, Johnathan Hankins elected to give up his final year of eligibility to jump into the NFL draft.

Roby could have done that, too, but decided to return, along with safeties Christian Bryant and C.J. Barnett.

"You have the two safeties back now, and you have Roby. So that's three out of four (spots in the secondary) that's stable - where our D-line is not stable, and our linebacker position is not stable," Meyer said after Hankins announced his decision in January. "So you throw the back end in that, we're dealing with an unstable defense. That's big."

Adolphus Washington, Tommy Schutt, Joel Hale, Michael Bennett, Noah Spence and Steve Miller are all holdovers who are in the running for playing time up front.

Any other problem areas? Meyer referred to it above: Linebacker. It's a sign of how little faith he had in the position a year ago that midway through the season he moved a starting fullback (Boren) to supplement the linebackers - and Boren hadn't played there since high school.

Shazier had a fine season in 2012 but beyond him there are question marks. Camren Williams, Conner Crowell, Joshua Perry and David Perkins - all freshmen last fall  will be tested to see if they're ready to take over.

How good can the backfield be? Superlative. Miller has been working on his passing after completing 58 percent of his throws for just 170 yards a game. The powerful Hyde should be even better this season, with fifth-year senior Jordan Hall pushing him for carries and playing time. Rod Smith and Bri'onte Dunn add depth at running back, with Kenny Guiton again backing up Miller.

Everything OK in special teams? Drew Basil is back to handle the kicking chores, but he may end up doing double duty. Gone is punter Ben Buchanan and there really isn't a player waiting in the wings.

- Any other new additions or subtractions? Let's not forget the 24 recruits signed in what most scouting services called one of the top-five classes in the country. Some of them may be able to step in right away and contribute, but that's always a risky proposition. For now, let's just say that Meyer and his staff added someone to take over for Miller (J.T. Barrett), some promising backs (Dontre Wilson, Ezekiel Elliott) and defensive linemen (Joey Bosa, Tyquan Lewis, Tracy Sprinkle), a couple of athletic corners (Eli Apple, Cameron Burrows), a five-star safety (Vonn Bell) and some fleet receivers (Jalin Marshall, Gareon Conley) among many others.

Apple, Barrett, Burrows, Lewis and Sprinkle are all on campus and are learning the system this spring.

Oh, and you can include this on your list of additions: Cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs is now also in charge of special teams.

Anything else that concerns Meyer? Well, he's not crazy about the bowl ban last year costing his program a lot of valuable practice time in December. He vowed the players would have to make up for that NCAA-mandated vacation by doubling their efforts during offseason conditioning.

Even though that bowl ban falls away and the Buckeyes are eligible to go anywhere they are wanted after the 2013 season, Meyer still is upset that Ohio State faces recruiting limitations. He wanted to sign more players to his bumper crop, but had to leave three off the list. As he said, "That could be three Braxton Millers. It's not easy to deal with."

--What's the spring schedule? The Buckeyes practice Tuesday and Thursday, then the players are off over spring break before returning March 19. The workouts will continue until the annual spring game which, because of concrete work being done at Ohio Stadium, will be played this year at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati on April 13.

--And what about the 2013 schedule? The season opens on Aug. 31 at the Horseshoe against Buffalo. Subsequent home games include San Diego State, FBS team Florida A&M, Wisconsin, Iowa, Penn State and Indiana. The lone non-conference road game is at California on Sept. 14. In the Big Ten, the Buckeyes travel to Northwestern, Purdue, Illinois and, on Nov. 30, archrival Michigan.

(Remember: Ohio State is raising ticket prices this fall, so it'll cost you $9 more per ticket - a 13-percent increase).

And, yes, the Buckeyes are eligible for the Big Ten title game this year. It is Dec. 7 in Indianapolis. For optimistic Buckeyes fans, tickets are not available yet.

Oregon still a title contender?

Many programs slide when a coach leaves, but Oregon might be different

Updated: March 4, 2013, 1:09 PM ET
By Brian Fremeau | Football Outsiders

The Oregon Ducks have established themselves as one of the premier college football programs in the country. Only Alabama and Boise State have won more games over the last five seasons. Further, Oregon has finished among the top four in the final Associated Press poll in each of the last three seasons, the only team to accomplish that feat.

What happens when a program on top of the college football landscape has to deal with a head-coaching change? Chip Kelly flirted with departing Eugene multiple times in the last few seasons but finally made the leap to the NFL in January when he joined the Philadelphia Eagles. In his place, former Ducks offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich has been appointed the team's new head coach. What impact will Kelly's move have on the expectations and future success of the Oregon program he took to the top?

There is a sample-size issue with this particular question. Oregon ranks No. 3 in our Program FEI (PFEI) ratings, a measure of five-year possession efficiency. In the last five seasons, only three other top-five programs (based on PFEI rankings) experienced a coaching change. Florida (transitioning from Urban Meyer to Will Muschamp following the 2010 season), Ohio State (transitioning from Jim Tressel to Luke Fickell following the 2010 season) and USC (transitioning from Pete Carroll to Lane Kiffin following the 2009 season) were the only programs that ranked as high as Oregon at the time of their coaching changes. All three took a step back, losing at least five games the next season.
But it's not all bad.

Georgia Football: 5 Players That Need to Have a Huge Spring Season

Daniel Shirey-USA TODAY Sports

Spring football is a time for a fresh start.

It may have been only two months since the Georgia Bulldogs played in the Capital One Bowl, but they are already looking forward to 2013 season and spring football could not have come at a better time.

Some players, such as Aaron Murray, Todd Gurley and Jordan Jenkins, are looking to build on what they accomplished last season and leave spring practice injury-free.

However, there are other players who need to capitalize on every rep they get during the 15 practice sessions because they are either fighting for their starting position or proving to the coaches they are ready to take the next step.

Here are five players that need to have a strong spring season.

Heisman winner Manziel back on field after whirlwind offseason

CBSSports.com wire reports
March 5, 2013 8:34 PM ET

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel was back on the field with his teammates at spring practice on Tuesday.

But the whirlwind season he had last year brings up the question of just how long the quarterback will remain an Aggie.

The quarterback became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy in 2012. He will be eligible for the NFL Draft after the 2013 season since he redshirted his first season in College Station.

He knows questions about the possibility of leaving school early are inevitable. But he's not thinking about that right now.

"I will just try to answer it the same way I do every time," he said. "It's always been a dream of mine, but for now I'm very content and very happy where I am right now. So I love it here."

Still, he admitted that he will consider all the possibilities when it is time.

"Whenever that decision comes, I will have to sit down and evaluate it just like you do with anything else in your life," he said. "With the NFL, if you have an opportunity to go, then you look at it. But I love this place, I love coach [Kevin] Sumlin and all my teammates here ... I'm not in any rush to make a decision like that."

Manziel is however taking steps to guard his future, and said after Tuesday's practice that he is in the process of getting an insurance policy to protect him in case of injury.

"It's just a precaution," he said. "I think there's a lot of players out there that have done it in the past. You never know what could happen. Football is a dangerous sport, so you kind of have to make sure that you take the precaution."

Sumlin said he tries to be there for Manziel as much as he can, but he's careful not to overdo it with his words of wisdom.

"His life is forever changed," Sumlin said. "For me to tell him a lot, or anybody else to tell him a lot, it's really kind of hard because nobody has been in those shoes. All we can do is give him advice. We've got a great support system here for him. We have great communication."

Texas A&M went 11-2 in its first season in the SEC after moving from the Big 12, its first 11-win season since 1998. Manziel led the Aggies to a win at national champion Alabama, and became A&M's first Heisman winner since 1957. Manziel threw for more than 3,700 yards and added more than 1,400 yards on the ground last year to win the award.

Last year at this time, Manziel was competing to be a starter. He knows things are much different now after the success he had in his first season. But the increased expectations won't change his approach.

"I feel like we're doing all right. We're still just out here playing football, doing the same things that we did last year," he said. "We didn't have a lot of expectations last year, and there's a lot more talk this year. So for us, we just have to make sure that we continue to do the things that got us where we are today."

Sumlin watched the development of Manziel throughout last season, and expects that progress to continue in his second year. He isn't concerned that his work ethic will change because of what happened last year.

"As much as we talk to him, he's as hard on himself as any of the coaches are," Sumlin said. "He wants to be great. Because of that he'll work at it. He's very, very honest and we're honest with him about what we see. He continues to work to improve."

The team practiced for about two hours on Tuesday wearing shorts. The Aggies will don pads for their next practice on Thursday.

The Aggies will use this spring to test out a revamped offensive line. There will be several changes to the group tasked with protecting Manziel, but the biggest one will be Jake Matthews taking over at left tackle for Outland Trophy winner Luke Joeckel, who left early for the draft.

"In the first few days, first weeks we're still figuring out the pieces and what you have with guys," Manziel said. "There's a lot of new guys coming in and you're trying to plug guys in the offensive line. The first few weeks we'll evaluate and make sure we get everybody plugged into the right places, and from there it's just making sure that we continue to get better every week."

Texas A&M also has a new offensive coordinator in Clarence McKinney, who took over after Kliff Kingsbury became the coach at Texas Tech. Manziel said that transition has been easy because McKinney has worked in Sumlin's system for years, and they already had a good relationship.

Louisville Cardinals

Cardinals Ready to Move On; Spring Practice Opens March 20
Cardinals return 19 starters

Bedford Interview
Watson Interview

LOUISVILLE, Ky.- The 2013 Sugar Bowl victory over Florida is a distant memory. While the win is a big part of the history of the program, the University of Louisville football team is ready to turn the page and gear up for the 2013 season, a year that could be just as magical.

The Cardinals will do that when they take the field for the start of spring practice on Wednesday, March 20. Louisville returns most of its starting lineup from last season's 11-2 squad, which won a second-straight BIG EAST title and upset third-ranked Florida in the Sugar Bowl.

After finishing in the top 25 for the third-straight year, the Cardinals are fortunate to return 12 starters on the defensive side of the football. The only starter that needs to be replaced is cornerback Adrian Bushell, who was a two-time BIG EAST all-conference performer. That position is one area that concerns defensive coordinator Vance Bedford, who begins his fourth season running the defense.

"We do have some depth for the first time, especially upfront," Bedford said. "We don't have that depth that we need in the secondary, especially at the cornerback position. We still are trying to build depth there, but I'm excited. The challenge is to keep the young guys from listening to all the outside things that they did in the past. What they did last season has nothing to do with what will happen this season."

One guy who can change the outlook in the secondary is junior Terell Floyd, the team leader in interceptions a year ago. A product of Fort Pierce, Fla., Floyd is one of the veterans in the secondary after playing in 25 career games. He made the play of the year when he intercepted Florida's Jeff Driskel and returned it for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage in the Sugar Bowl.

"Floyd needs to take another step," Bedford said. "As he gets older, the confidence factor will come. He is a young man. He has the physical tools that you look for. He has the size and the speed. He is a physical guy. He needs to gain confidence. If he gains that, he will be a big-time football player."

The offense lost three starters, including two on the offensive line in Mario Benavides and Alex Kupper. However, the Cardinals are loaded offensively with most of the skill players returning, including quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year.

Second-year offensive coordinator Shawn Watson pushed the offense to a new level last year, as the Cardinals averaged over 30 points a game and displayed an explosive passing game. Louisville scored 30 or more points in six games last season and averaged 418.8 yards of total offense.

"We have set a standard and an expectation on how we play," Watson said. "The good thing is that we have a lot of veterans back. The real cool thing is that they see the improvements that we have making. It's a really good place."

Big plays were a big part of the offense, led by junior wide receiver DeVante Parker, who caught 10 touchdown passes and averaged 18.6 yards per catch. A product of Ballard High School in Louisville, Parker caught 40 passes for 744 yards and registered eight touchdowns in his last six games.

"I think DeVante is ready to take the next step," Watson said. "I think he has improved as a route runner and you saw what he did with the ball in his hands last season. He was very exciting and I look forward to seeing his development."

Leading the offense will be one of the more-discussed names in college football in Teddy Bridgewater. The Miami, Fla., native threw for 3,718 yards and 27 touchdowns, but more importantly, he completed 68.5 percent of his throws and tossed just eight interceptions. He is considered one of the top players in the country, but Bridgewater, according to his coach, isn't focused on individual accomplishments.

"Teddy is all about the team," Watson said. "He is about his role with the team. Honestly, the Heisman hype and the future in the NFL isn't something he thinks about. Teddy isn't geared that way. He is different and that is why he has been such a good player and such a good student. He is always driven toward the team. Everything we want is out in front of us, but it's all about the team."

There is so much excitement around the 2013 football team, but the group understands what is out there for them. This season's chapter, which could prove to be even more exciting, begins on Aug. 31, when the Cardinals play host to Ohio.

my outlook for 2013.........   (Posted on 1/7/13 at 9:42 a.m.)

I know we have a lot of question marks with all the jrs moving on, but that's college football! Teams look completely different every two years, that's just how it is.

I have a tremendous amount of faith in Chavis and the amount of talent he has to work with. The guy just knows how to field SEC defenses and he has a roster full of guys who can play his type of D.

There are going to be so many of these guys that are going to be superstars and house hold names come September, it's just a matter of who? Rasco? Kwon? Mills? I can't wait to find out.

I could see the possibility for one of the best D units in the country, I could also see on that struggles at times but still very good.

Our offense is essentially entirely intact and despite what you think about mett and the coaching, it can only get better from here IMO. And I think it will, maybe not super powered but better. I think we're going to see some meaningful adjustments, call me a sunshine pumper if you want.

The best part nobody is talking about? We have a big test week 1 in TCU, they're a good team and they're going to demand our best. Which makes for a very productive Spring and Summer getting prepared. And that could be the key to our whole season, developing players this off season (esp on D) that is.

I see 10-2 with a chance at 11-1 and the West title. From there who knows.

Worst case, 9-3 and the Cap one bowl. But considering the early departures and the schedule, wouldn't be a bad year at all.
