Luke 15:22-32
22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.
25 “Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. 27 ‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’
28 “The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. 29 But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’
31 “‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”

Linebackers impress, Beckwith watches from sidelines
Offensive Report by HUNT PALMER
BBI Senior Writer
As we enter the final week of spring ball, it’s apparent that the team is moving more crisply and more is being done at these practices than was done three weeks ago. That’s what you’d expect as spring ball comes to a close.
We were able to watch nearly a half an hour of practice today, and it started with the Oklahoma Drill. We’ve got video coming, but here were some of the notes I took.
Ego Ferguson, Danielle Hunter and Freak Johnson were a virtual brick wall up there. Hunter made a pair of nice plays, and he drew the praise and encouragement of Jordan Allen in the process. Good to see those two supportive of one another.
I also noticed that they used a little tempo in that period. They wanted to get the ball and snap it.
Fehoko Fanaika put an excellent block and drive on Lamin Barrow. He’s also got Barrow by 125 lbs, so that helps.
Dillon Gordan may have been the star of the drill. He owned Mickey Johnson.
J.C. Copeland participated even though he had a green jersey on. No one can stop him in there. He’s just a bowling ball.
Micah Eugene and Dwayne Thomas took their turn beating Armand Williams.
Then they split for individuals and I took the offense.
I’m telling you Zach Mettenberger is having a big spring. Other than his first throw, he was just about on the money all day, and today they worked on deep crosses and flies.
Couple of uncharacteristic drops from Jarvis Landry, but he’ll be just fine.
Stephen Rivers struggled with the wind a bit, as did the other guys. He looks better throwing the crossing route than the deep ball.
Anthony Jennings looks very comfortable with all of the throws, still a little bit more than Hayden Rettig.
I made it a point to watch Dillon Gordon in the pass catching drill, and he looks great. Logan Stokes on the other hand won’t be hauling in too many passes. Gordon also drew praise from Les Miles when the tight ends were working with the OL on blocking. Gordon is the total package in my book.
Speaking of the OL, there were a pair of absences. Elliot Porter and Jerald Hawkins didn’t work out. Of the other guys, I thought Trai Turner looked great. He’s so strong in there.
The running backs did a ton of footwork today. Alfred Blue looks like he could play tonight if they needed him. He was weaving through cones without as much as a misstep. He and Jeremy Hill are a scary proposition.
One more workout Thursday with the student body present. Then they finish this thing up with the spring game Saturday afternoon.
Defensive Report by LUKE JOHNSON
Tiger Rag Assistant Editor
Every time I’ve watched the LSU defense practice this spring I invariably end up wandering over to the linebackers for the majority of the time slotted for the media.
That was the case again today. It may not be the best tactic, since it is my duty to inform the public of the goings on in the 15-20 minutes open to us and the linebacker corps is usually the hardest one to see. But the linebackers, as a whole, have been a sight to see this spring.
Today, like it has other times this spring, the linebackers stood out among the rest of the defensive position groups. Maybe it’s because the linebackers are the only ones going close to full speed during drills, but they were flying out there today.
Nobody in particular stood out, but every one of them displayed speed getting to the ball carrier during an open-field tackling drill. The linebacking unit is a deep group, and that’s got to be music to defensive coordinator John Chavis’ ears — especially with all the talent he’s losing at other spots along the defensive line.
Watching the linebackers from the sidelines today was Kendell Beckwith, a four-star recruit from East Feliciana who will join the Tigers this fall and add to a potential embarrassment of riches.
Now, on to the other members of the defense.
I haven’t been particularly impressed with sophomore Corey Thompson at safety this spring. He’s got the size and the speed to be a star at the position, but he has looked a step behind in some of the drills the defensive backs have run.
Then I saw him attack the ball in the air today, and now I may be reversing course.
Thompson is a big man — he’s listed at 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds — and that immediately led me to think he’d be best as an Eric Reid-type player: adept in the passing game and devastating when an unaware receiver across the middle.
But coaches were trying to throw the ball over his head today, and he kept flying high to get the ball. It was an impressive display of physical ability, and I’ll be looking for him in center field this fall.
Defensive backs Ronald Martin, Craig Loston, Jalen Mills and Derrick Raymond were not at practice today.
Quotable
“You’ve got to be more physical! This ain’t for the faint of heart, brother.” — Defensive line coach Brick Haley to freshman defensive lineman Christian LaCouture during a shed drill.

LSU offense squares off against defense in eight-man drill
By LUKE JOHNSON
Tiger Rag Assistant Editor
Emotions were high at LSU spring practice today, as members of the offense and defense squared off against one another during the “Big Cats” drill.
The drill pits three down linemen and one member in the backfield on either side of the ball. The offense has three tries to advance the ball 10 yards. Things got chippy at times as each side was battling for some personal pride.
Note: I apologize for the shoddy camera work. The players weren’t the only ones jockeying for position, as LSU coach Les Miles repeatedly had to shoo the media (and non-participating players) away from the drill.

Ex-UGA Coach Jim Donnan Charged In Ponzi Scheme
By KATE BRUMBACK
04/16/13 10:18 PM ET EDT
The grand jury last week returned the 85-count indictment against Donnan and Gregory L. Crabtree of Proctorville, Ohio. The charges include conspiracy, mail fraud and wire fraud, among others.
Charles Cox, a lawyer for Crabtree, said his client entered a not guilty plea at his arraignment Tuesday in Macon and was released on bond.
"We have no other comment, as neither Mr. Crabtree nor I had seen the indictment before this afternoon," Cox wrote in an email. "The not guilty plea he entered today was the first step in his defense of these charges."
A lawyer for Donnan did not immediately respond to calls and an email seeking comment. Donnan was also set to make his initial court appearance Tuesday, but it wasn't immediately known if he appeared.
The indictment says the pair ran the scheme through GLC Limited, Inc., a West Virginia-based company that dealt in closeout merchandise. Crabtree was president of the company and was responsible for its day-to-day operation, while Donnan's main role was to recruit investors, the indictment says. The pair offered and sold short-term investments, and promised investors rates of return ranging from 50 percent to 200 percent.
Investors generally weren't given much information about the deals but threw their money in because they trusted Donnan. He and Crabtree routinely lied to investors about the nature of the business, the indictment says. Read more...http://www.

Reports: 'Major' violations occurred

Reports: Major Violations At Oregon
Chris Spielman discusses the impact the "major" violations will have on Oregon's football program.Tags: Chris Spielman, Chip Kelly, Will Lyles, football, major violations
The revelations were made in a summary disposition report included in the documents released Monday night. The contents were first reported by KATU television in Portland.
Miller: News Good, Bad For Ducks
The strength of Oregon's position is the way the NCAA reacted to other recent cases, as well as the gray area with NCAA rules on recruiting services, Ted Miller writes. Blog
• Pac-12 blog
The NCAA began looking into possible violations following reports about payments Oregon made to recruiting services, including a $25,000 payment to Willie Lyles and Houston-based Complete Scouting Services in 2010. Lyles had a connection with an Oregon recruit.
The NCAA will not comment on the ongoing investigations.
Oregon's athletic department issued a statement that said: "The review is ongoing until the NCAA Committee on Infractions issues its final report. The integrity of the process and our continued full cooperation with the NCAA prohibits us from publicly discussing the specifics of this matter."
The university released 515 pages of documents on Monday night in response to public records requests. The documents were heavily redacted and included several drafts of the summary disposition report.
The report included details of Oregon's relationship with Lyles. Following allegations of possible violations in 2011, Oregon released information that Lyles had produced but it was largely outdated.
"There were underlying major violations coupled with failure to monitor violations involving the head coach (2009 through 2011) and the athletics department (2008-2011)," the report said. "While the violations were not intentional in nature, coaches and administrators of a sports program at an NCAA member institution have an obligation to ensure that the activities being engaged in comply with NCAA legislation."

"There is no finding of lack of institutional control and no findings of unethical conduct," the report said. "None of the underlying violations were intentional in nature."
Chip Kelly was head coach at Oregon for the past four seasons, leading the Ducks to a 46-7 record with appearances in four straight BCS bowl games -- including a bid for the national championship against Auburn in 2011. He left Oregon to become head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this year.
"I am aware of the recent reports and of the ongoing investigation being conducted by the NCAA and the University of Oregon. While at Oregon, I know we were fully cooperative with all aspects of the investigation and I will continue to contribute in any way that I can. But until the NCAA rules on the matter, I will have no further comment," Kelly said Tuesday in a statement released by the Eagles.
Ducks offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich was promoted to head coach at Oregon following Kelly's departure.
Oregon was penalized by the NCAA in 2004 for a major violation involving the improper recruitment of a junior college player by an assistant coach. The university was put on probation for two years and the unidentified assistant coach was suspended without pay for a week and restricted from some recruiting activities.
Oregon remained eligible for postseason play and did not lose any scholarships because of that violation, which occurred in 2003. The case was resolved without a formal hearing after the NCAA's governing body agreed with the university's proposed penalties.
The summary disposition, submitted Oct. 30 of last year, said the NCAA had yet to determine whether the previous penalty has impact on the current case.

Dandy Don'd LSU Sports Report
The LSU football team returned to practice yesterday and by all reports it was a good outing.
Players vying for a starting role or a spot on the two-deep depth chart
will have two more practices this spring, counting Saturday's Spring
Game, to make their cases in front of the coaching staff before more
competition arrives in August for the Fall session.Among the most interesting “battles” that I've observed this spring involve competition for the backup quarterback role. From what I’ve seen, Anthony Jennings appears to be winning that battle, and it will be interesting to see if that is reflected in the starting lineups for Saturday's Spring Game. Stephen Rivers entered the spring as the clear No. 2, but Jennings has shown that he has a wider-ranging skill set with great mobility and a strong enough arm to make all the throws. Plus, he's got an extremely strong work ethic, which has gone a long way in impressing the staff. (Note: On my depth chart I still list Stephen Rivers as No. 2 at QB, but I might be changing that after Saturday's game.)
Other positions that have been very competitive this spring include defensive end, middle linebacker and right tackle. At DE, junior Jordan Allen has really come on strong and seems to battling sophomore Danielle Hunter for the spot opposite of Jermauria Rasco, but more competition is coming this fall when Kendal Beckwith, Frank Herron, Tashawn Bower and Michael Patterson arrive. Also, Christian LaCouture has been getting looks there as well. At middle linebacker, Lamin Barrow was widely expected to fill the spot vacated by Kevin Minter, but D.J. Welter has been getting a lot of first-team reps there. As for the right tackle position, Vadal Alexander looked very good there as a true freshman last year before injuring his knee prior to the Clemson game, but he is still not back to 100% health. Because of this, redshirt freshman Jerald Hawkins has taken a lot of snaps with the No. 1s and has been very impressive. I don't know if he'll be able to overtake a healthy Alexander this fall, but I have no doubt that he will give him a run for his money and will likely be the first offensive lineman off the bench next season if he doesn't earn a starting role. (Note: I've heard that Hawkins and Welter were not present at practice yesterday, at least not during the time that the media was allowed in.)
Another position that has been of great interest to me this spring is wide receiver. Two Tigers who have really made a name for themselves there are Travin Dural and John Diarse. My dearly departed Dad, Don, was always very high on Dural who he saw play several times at Breaux Bridge High School, and after seeing how he's been used this spring and how the coaches have praised him, I am really high on him too. However, all of the talented wide receivers on this season's team could get overshadowed by JUCO sensation Quantavious Leslie if he is as good as they say he is and if he makes it to campus this fall. It was recently reported that he has been cleared by the NCAA and is just awaiting a passing algebra score to fully qualify.
Speaking of talented wide receivers, earlier this week ESPN released their list of top-10 receivers in the country for 2014 and Louisiana prospects made up three of the top-six spots. Malachi Dupre of John Curtis came in at No. 2, Trey Quinn of Barbe came in at No. 3, and Cameron Sims of Ouachita Parish came in at No. 6. And if ESPN had of considered athlete Speedy Noil of Edna Karr as a wide receiver, Louisiana would have had four of the top-10 receivers in the country. Here is ESPN’s breakdown of the top receivers.
