BATON
ROUGE — LSU coach Les Miles hired Cam Cameron to be his offensive
coordinator, hoping his long-suffering offense could catch up with the
Tigers’ long-dominating defense.
Cameron’s up-tempo attack also could aid the Tigers’ defense, which has lost such stars as ends Barkevious Mingo and Sam Montgomery, tackle Bennie Logan, middle linebacker Kevin Minter, cornerback Tharold Simon and safety Eric Reid.
“The offense is something I’m looking forward to,” said defensive tackle Anthony Johnson, who will be a junior next season and expected to be one of the unit’s leaders. “It’s looking good. As a defense, practicing against that and game planning for that is different because you take a couple of days to get a groove for it.”
Johnson and company will get a game-like test against Cameron’s new offense on Saturday when spring practice closes with the spring game at 2 p.m. in Tiger Stadium.
“Practicing against it? It’s tiresome,” the 6-foot-3, 294-pound Johnson said. “You’ve got to run everywhere. The offensive line is moving lateral instead of going up the field a lot more. Running backs are running up the field. The quarterback’s making quick throws, getting it out of his hands. As a team, I think it’s going to help us a lot more. And everybody looks like they’re getting into shape just running around.”
If not in the spring game, Johnson expects opponents next fall not to recognize what he thinks could be the anti-LSU offense.
“That’s what it is,” he said. “LSU is known for more of a run and pound offense. When you look at it, a lot of teams are going to be surprised when they see us spreading the field and spreading the ball around and running the tempo offense.”
On paper, opponents may think they will be able to pound LSU’s defense next season, considering the losses. But then, despite replacing top players nearly every year, LSU’s defense has been among the best in the SEC and – in the last two years – the nation since John Chavis took over as defensive coordinator in 2009.
