Giving a free pass to who they are instead of what they are doing, instead of living up to the standards of our country's laws we are lowering our standards by bending the laws or not enforcing the law at all, and truly becoming a lawless Nation.

ROMULUS, Mich.

A team led by a state-appointed emergency manager said Friday that Detroit is defaulting on about $2.5 billion in unsecured debt and is asking creditors to take about 10 cents on the dollar of what the city owes them.

Kevyn Orr spent two hours with about 180 bond insurers, pension trustees, union representatives and other creditors in a move to avoid what bankruptcy experts have said would be the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history.

Underfunded pension claims likely would get less than the 10 cents on the dollar.

An assessment of the plan's progress will come in the next 30 days or so.

Orr also announced that Detroit stopped paying on its unsecured debt Friday to "conserve cash" for police, fire and other services in the city of 700,000 people. The debt not being paid includes $39 million owed to a certificate of participation.

"We will not pay that today," Orr told reporters after the meeting with creditors at a hotel at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus.

His team said the proposal is the one shot to permanently fix fiscal problems that have made the city insolvent.

Orr said everyone involved needs to come to grips with Detroit's dire financial situation that has been worsened by years of procrastination and denial.

"If people are sincere and look at this data, you would think a rational person will step back and say, `This is not normal ... but what choice do we have?'" Orr said.

The city's budget deficit could top $380 million by July 1. Orr believes long-term debt tops $17 billion.

The Washington-based bankruptcy attorney hired by Michigan in March reiterated that the chances of bankruptcy are 50-50 for Detroit, the largest U.S. city placed under state oversight.

The city will not be able to back up some promises related to pension and post-employment health care and benefits. Orr is proposing a $27 million to $40 million health care replacement program that will partially rely on the federal Affordable Health Care Act, health exchanges and Medicare.

He also said $1.25 billion will be set aside from concession savings over 10 years for public safety, lighting and eliminating neighborhood blight.

WASHINGTON - Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin criticized the Obama administration's decision to supply weapons to the rebels in the civil war in Syria today, arguing that the U.S. should "Let Allah sort it out" until there is a stronger leader in the White House.

"Militarily, where is our commander in chief? We're talking now more new interventions. I say until we know what we're doing, until we have a commander and chief who knows what he's doing, well, let these radical Islamic countries who aren't even respecting basic human rights, where both sides are slaughtering each other as they scream over an arbitrary red line, 'Allah Akbar,' I say until we have someone who knows what they're doing, I say let Allah sort it out," Palin said at the Faith and Freedom Coalition Conference.

Earlier this week, the White House announced it confirmed that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime has used chemical weapons in the fight against its own people, and the Obama administration will provide more "direct support" to the Syrian opposition since the president's "red line" has been crossed.

The White House said today that Obama discussed the civil war in Syria with European leaders in a teleconference Friday, and the issue is expected to dominate much of the conversation at the G-8 Summit in Northern Ireland next week.

Palin, speaking at the conclusion of the three-day Faith and Freedom Coalition Conference, also took a swipe at another speaker at the conservative forum, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who argued Friday that one of the reasons to support the Senate's immigration reform plan is because "Immigrants are more fertile."


"I think it's kind of dangerous territory, territory to want to debate this whole one race's fertility rate over another, and I say this from someone who's kind of fertile herself," Palin said. "I don't think that's where we want to go in deciding how will we incentivize the hardworking responsible families who want to live in the light, follow the law, become Americans, versus those whose very first act on our soil is to break the law? There are different ways that we can debate this."

As she warned the conservative crowd of "tyranny" in government, Palin said that the recent scandals involving the Internal Revenue Service and the National Security Agency make the country feel "so Orwellian around here, you know, '1984.'"

Calling Washington, D.C. "one hot mess," Palin also doled out some advice to Congress, who she said should follow the lead of a young senator whom she backed in his 2012 race - Texas. Sen. Ted Cruz.

"You know what I wish Congress would do? If they would just for one week perhaps, put themselves on Cruz control, on Ted Cruz control," Palin said. "Just for a week and let's see where things go. I think we'd see some solutions."

Though she has often served as the butt of jokes on NBC's "Saturday Night Live," Palin joked about the frequency with which the comedy show makes fun of her, saying she's provided an ample amount of jokes and jobs for comedians.

"They should think of me as a friend. For a while there, I was providing more job security for the Tina Feys of the world and doing more for those employment numbers than Obama's ever done," Palin said.

Tigers get first look at Omaha’s new jewel

OMAHA, Neb. — At 3 p.m. Friday, the LSU baseball team set foot on the grass of TD Ameritrade Park for the first time.

The Tigers spilled out of the third-base dugout clad in familiar gold jerseys for practice at the site of their College World Series opener against UCLA on Sunday night.

In some ways, it was just a normal practice. The team went through its standard stretching routine in the outfield as undergraduate assistant coach Blake Dean and equipment manager Matt Fury played a game of catch in foul territory in front of the dugout.

A few minutes later, head coach Paul Mainieri and assistant Will Davis picked up a baseball and started tossing it back and forth. Down in the left-field bullpen, right-hander Ryan Eades got in his sidework under the watchful eye of pitching coach Alan Dunn.

Davis and Dean split the mound duty, throwing batting practice to groups of hitters as teammates shagged flies and snared grounders.

Though the routine could have passed for an early-season, midweek workout in Alex Box Stadium, the surroundings provided by the crown jewel of college baseball brought reminders that this day and this place were extraordinary.

An LSU baseball team was on the field in this three-year-old stadium for the first time as the squad with the best won-lost record in school history continued pursuit of the program’s seventh national championship.

Large capital letters painted on the façade of the upper deck screamed “History happens here,” and history will be made as the 67th CWS begins Saturday.

The sprinkling of fans in the stands and the large number of camera crews circling the batting cage made it clear this was no ordinary practice.

LSU designated hitter Sean McMullen took a break in the dugout to sing Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles” for an ESPN camera crew.

“I can’t believe I’m actually out here playing,” McMullen said. “I’ve only dreamed of this day. I’m going to soak it all in. Like my coach said, I like my cake, and I’m going to eat it, too. I’m going to enjoy this, but we’ve also got business to take care of.”

LSU went ahead and took care of business in the 60-minute workout, just as the other seven teams did.

The players were struck by just how big the park is. The dimensions are 375 feet to the power alleys and 408 feet to center field, but on Friday the wind was blowing in at 27 mph and gusting to 33, making it play even bigger.

“It’s playing like it’s 400 feet to left,” said first baseman Mason Katz, who hit 16 home runs in TD Ameritrade under much calmer conditions in a home run derby last summer.

“I don’t think there are going to be too many home runs hit here in the next week or two,” said right-hander Aaron Nola, who is slated to start Sunday. “This park is unbelievable. It’s a big league park.”

Shortstop Alex Bregman said he “was getting butterflies in the hotel room” before heading to the park some 2½ days before the first game.

When the Tigers hit the field to work out, a chant of “L-S-U” went up from the stands.

“This is the spot,” Bregman said. “This is where you need to be — beautiful playing surface, beautiful stands. It’s so much fun to be out here. There’s a buzz already going around the stadium. It was good to hear some LSU fans over there.”

Bregman, the national freshman of the year, was making himself at home as quickly as he did when he arrived on LSU’s campus from Albuquerque, N.M.

“This is the grass I play on back home,” he said. “So it’s a little different from Louisiana. It plays a little slower, so I have to come get everything at shortstop.”

UCLA followed LSU to the field, and all eight teams got together for an evening cookout before watching the scheduled opening ceremonies.

On Saturday, games between Indiana and Louisville as well as Oregon State and Mississippi State will take center stage. The Tigers will have a more mundane practice at a nearby high school.

“We feel like we’ve already been here a long time, and it’s only been a day,” Katz said. “This week is going by extremely slowly. This is all exciting, but we want to hit the fast-forward button to the game.”

Bowl Game Payouts Map: Money Earned In 2011-2012 BCS And Other Football Bowls (INFOGRAPHIC)




Income inequality has become a hot topic for debate in the wake of the Occupy movements that have sprung up around the world during the past few months. In short, the Occupiers are protesting an economic system in which, they believe, 99% percent of us are barred from the riches and opportunities hoarded by the ultra-rich 1% at the top of the financial food chain.


In other words, it's a world in which Boise State plays in the MAACO Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 22 against the unranked Arizona State despite being ranked as the nation's No. 7 college football team in the final BCS standings.


According to those who rallied in Zuccotti Park in Manhattan, Frank Ogawa Plaza in Oakland and so many other places around the country, the elited monied class is actively working against the world's wealth being distributed in a more equal fashion according to merit rather than social standing. At the (acknowledged) risk of oversimplifying two extremely complex problems, this all sounds sort of like what Boise State coach Chris Peterson said after learning that his team was bound for Vegas for a game to be played before Christmas.

"Everybody is just very tired of the BCS," Petersen told The Idaho Statesman, "I think that's the bottom line. Everybody is frustrated. Everybody doesn't really know what to do anymore. It doesn't make sense to anybody. I don't think anybody is happy anywhere."

This is the fourth year that Boise State has entered the bowl season as one of the Top 10 teams in the nation yet not received a lucrative invite to a BCS game. Of course, the Broncos weren't the only teams not to land a BCS spot -- and the ensuing payout -- that the rankings indicated they had earned.


"Why are we even voting if they're all left out of games like that?" Petersen continued. "It doesn't make any sense. I don't know who it makes sense to. I haven't heard anybody say, 'This is pretty good.' Everybody goes, 'This is really bad.'"

Along with Boise State, Kansas State and Arkansas were passed over by the BCS despite being ranked among the top 10 schools. Meanwhile, Virginia Tech and Michigan were tapped by the BCS' Sugar Bowl despite being ranked 11th and 13th. Michigan's selection was especially galling to some as they were tapped ahead of Michigan State despite the fact that Michigan State had beaten them head to head and earned a place in the Big 10 Title Game, where they lost to Wisconsin. With a larger national following and one fewer loss by virtue of staying at home while conference title games were being played, the Wolverines rested their way into a much larger pay day.

Not surprisingly, SEC country seems to be raking in the cash. As you'll see, Boise State is tied for 19th-highest bowl payout despite having the seventh best football team.
