The brilliant Ron Rosenbaum, who has extensively studied and written about the Western Defense and Intelligence communities over many years (and must have been a spook at some point to do so so insightfully), wrote a brilliant (terrifying, but brilliant) book called "How the End Begins." In it, he explores with philosophers and theologians the potentially greater moral validity of a preemptive nuclear strike over that of a retaliatory strike.
If a nuclear Iran isn't an argument for the former, I don't know what is.
