Last year's defensive debacle at the Alamo led to major sideline sweeping, and the new officers are getting their guard up
ANDREW LAWRENCEHOW BAD WAS THE WASHINGTON DEFENSE IN 2011? SECOND TO last in the conference in scrimmage yards allowed per game (453.3) and points per game (35.9) and at the bottom in third-down conversion percentage (49.2)—that's how bad. Two days after the Huskies' clash with Baylor in the Alamo Bowl last Dec. 29, a tackling-optional affair that ended with Washington yielding a school-record 777 yards in a 67--56 defeat, coach Steve Sarkisian axed assistants Mike Cox (linebackers) and Jeff Mills (safeties) and defensive coordinator Nick Holt.Tennessee defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox was 2,100 miles away from the fallout, prepping for a recruiting trip, when Sarkisian surprised him with a phone call late on New Year's Eve. Wilcox, 35, consulted with football mentors (including his father, Dave, a Hall of Fame linebacker with the 49ers) on whether to abandon a marquee job directing a defense that he had transformed into a top 30 outfit in just two seasons for another extreme-makeover project. The next morning he was at an 11 o'clock recruiting meeting—in Seattle. Read more...http://

SEC and Big 12 sent Champions Bowl bid proposals to 10 cities
Published: Tuesday, August 07, 2012, 7:30 AM
By Jon Solomon -- The Birmingham NewsNew Orleans, Dallas, Atlanta, Phoenix, Houston, Orlando, San Antonio, Nashville, Tampa and Jacksonville received a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the game. ESPN first reported the cities that got bid packages.
The Champions Bowl plans to match the SEC and Big 12 champions with playoff access four times during the 12-year cycle. When the conference champion reaches the playoff in a year the Champions isn't part of it -- which could happen frequently -- the SEC and Big 12 will choose who to fill the Champions.
Bid proposals are due by Aug. 22. Not every city will necessarily bid for the Champions, which will assume the name of whatever bowl lands it. Read more...http://www.al.com/

Fall camp: Day 5 practice report
On Monday, which was the fifth practice of fall camp and the first workout in full pads, the media was allowed to view four sessions, which equated to about 20 minutes of practice.*** The morning started with some excitement as the team went through the big cat drill, and the battle between freshman linebacker Lorenzo Phillips and sophomore running back Terrance Magee was arguably the most exciting of the morning. One day after Phillips was on the wrong side of a loss to fullback J.C. Copeland, Phillips dominated Magee, pushing him a few feet back and then taking him to the ground, which drew praise from all of the coaches and players.

Prognosticating the Southeastern Conference in 2012
By RICHARD FISCHER
Tiger Rag Assistant Editor
Fall camps across the country are officially underway, so it’s time for me to release my second annual SEC season predictions column.
Last year, I was one-for-two, taking Georgia to win the East and Alabama to win the West — each with 11-1 marks.
In fact, I was even told I should “lay off the hooch” by one of our fine readers for picking the Dawgs to finish 11-1, but I’ll take their 10-2 regular-season finish to the bank as a success.
In a mini-spoiler, I’ve got Georgia at 11-1 once again. But will that be good enough for them to win the Eastern Division? You’ll have to continue reading to find out.
But I think most fans in the Pelican State will be happy to see my prediction for the Western Division as I have agreed with the media in Hoover for the second year in a row.
So without further ado, here are my picks for the 2012 season. I know you’ll let me know how I did with your comments below, and I promise I had Coke Zero with my lunch today.Read more...http://www.tigerrag.com/?p=
