No. 3 LSU makes early impression with lopsided win

BATON
ROUGE, La. (AP) -- After watching LSU run roughshod over his Huskies
for a more than five-touchdown victory, Washington coach Steve Sarkisian
lamented that the ''complexion'' of the game could have been different
if not for his team missing some early opportunities.
Meanwhile, LSU's Les Miles was outside the home locker room, lamenting a handful of dropped passes - one in the end zone - and dropped interceptions that prevented the third-ranked Tigers from dominating even more than they did in a 41-3 triumph.
After seemingly going through the motions in a season-opening 41-14 win over North Texas in its opener a week earlier, LSU demonstrated against Washington how large of a gap there is between their squad and an average team in another major conference such as the Pac-12. Dandy Don's LSU sports
After the Tigers’ impressive win over a quality Washington team, LSU jumped USC and moved up to No. 2 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, but remained at No. 3 in the AP behind Alabama and USC. As I said yesterday, the poll rankings mean very little at this point, and will work out just fine if LSU continues to take care of business. One team who suffered the consequence of not taking care of business is Arkansas who dropped all the way out of the top-25 in the AP, and down to No. 21 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, after losing to UL-Monroe.

East: So far, so good for LSU Tigers
September 10, 2012
The University of Washington was supposed to provide a stiffer challenge to — and therefore, better gauge of — No. 3 LSU.
The Huskies certainly had more talent than the Tigers’ opening-week opponent, North Texas — even though LSU disposed of them (41-3) more easily than they did the Mean Green (41-14). Read more...http://theadvocate.com/ sports/lsu/3856406-123/east- so-far-so-good

Glenn Guilbeau: LSU's loses another big one, keeps winning big
LSU lost offensive tackle Chris Faulk during practice for the Washington game, but still beat the Huskies 41-34 on Saturday. / Matthew Emmons/US Presswire
Writen by Glenn GuilbeauBut there is LSU today — No. 2 in the USA Today poll after whipping Washington 41-3 Saturday night like it was a mid-major.
Tyrann Mathieu, a crafty cornerback and nickel back terror who also returns punts for touchdowns on the side, missed the first game and is out for the season if not for all LSU seasons after substance-abuse policy violations.
Then last week, junior left tackle Chris Faulk was lost for likely the entire season when he suffered a knee injury in practice. Faulk, a towering block of granite at 6-foot-6 and 325 pounds, was headed to the first round of the NFL Draft next spring and may still be.
Mathieu’s complete bag of skill sets will never be truly replaced, but LSU can withstand that. It has talented and capable cornerbacks in Jalen Mills, who intercepted a pass Saturday night, and Jalen Collins to be good enough because of the quality front four and safeties around them in addition to some decent linebackers. Meet The New Orleans Saints new daddy...Griffin upsets Saints.
Washington Redskins' Griffin III warms up before their NFL football game against New Orleans Saints in New Orleans (Sean Gardner, Reuters)
Tinker Town: "This sports column just about said the same thing that I feel about yesterdays Saints fall from grace.
For the Saints to lose to a first year rookie QB right out of college is something that I thought that I would never see. My god?"
http://www.chicagotribune.com/
MIAMI (Reuters) - Rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III made an instant impact on debut, throwing for two touchdowns and 320 yards to lead the Washington Redskins to a shock 40-32 win at the New Orleans Saints in the National Football League on Sunday.
MIXED START
"Griffin's five-yard touchdown pass to Aldrick Robinson in the second quarter gave the Redskins a firm grip on the game.
Griffin was the second pick in this year's draft and the quarterback who was selected above him, Andrew Luck of the Indianapolis Colts, had more of mixed start to life among the professionals.
Luck, stepping into the shoes of Peyton Manning, who made his debut for the Denver Broncos later on Sunday, threw for 309 yards and a touchdown but also gave up three interceptions as the Colts fell 41-21 to the Chicago Bears.
The Bears banked a lot on teaming up quarterback Jay Cutler with wide receiver Brandon Marshall and the pairing delivered. Cutler threw for two touchdowns and 333 yards and Marshall collected one of those scores as he put up 119 yards receiving.
The Packers are among many experts' favorites to reach the Super Bowl again, after winning it two seasons ago and going 15-1 last season, but they looked far from championship material at Lambeau Field."

LSU vs. Washington: National championship for Tigers? Let Zach Mettenberger wing it

Matt Hayes
Sporting NewsBATON ROUGE, La.—So there they were in a name-the-score game, the lower bowl at massive Tiger Stadium thinning out early in the third quarter from sheer boredom.
There will be more games like this, more Saturdays when a team full of future Sunday stars makes it look ridiculously easy. It was then that No. 3 LSU made its only real miscalculation in a 41-3 laugher over Washington.
The Tigers threw a halfback pass.
I’m going to make this very easy for the brilliant LSU staff to understand (and I say “brilliant” with sincere respect): You have an NFL quarterback now.
For crying out loud, use him.
“Sometimes I’d like to be the guy playing at Texas Tech and throwing it 100 times a game,” says LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger. “But how can you argue with 41-3?”
You can’t. But I’m sure as heck going to try. Read more...http://aol.
