We’re back to our normally scheduled programming this week.
LSU head coach Les Miles will address reporters at his weekly press luncheon today, a week after Labor Day pushed his meeting with the media to Tuesday.
Miles will take the podium some time around 12:30 p.m., giving a brief address that looks back at the Washington win and previews the Idaho tilt before the eighth-year LSU coach fields questions from reporters.
Follow all the latest from Miles’ presser here on TigerRag.com by returning to this blog.
And, for Twitter coverage, follow us at Tiger_Rag.
UPDATE (12:33 p.m.): Miles has taken the podium.
- The LSU coach leads off talking about the Washington win, saying he’s happy his team improved from week one to week two. “I think it was pretty evident in this game. We reduced our penalties. We turned it over (only) once.”
UPDATE (12:38 p.m.): After speaking to the team’s improvement, Miles laments the wide receiver drops. He puts the number at five legitimate drops (meaning Zach Mettenberger would’ve had only one incompletion). Miles figures surer hands would’ve led to another 60-70 yards, maybe another touchdown to the score. He said the receivers know they had a let down and are ready to refocus and fix the problem.
- Miles continued talking about Mettenberger, acknowledging his improved play against Washington. He also openly said he and the team hope to use Mettenberger more as the season goes forward.
- Onto other players he liked versus the Huskies, Miles gives kudos to the running backs, Jalen Mills (who was named SEC Freshman of the Week after picking off a Keith Price pass) and Brad Wing, who Miles noted had two beautiful punts to completely change field position. You can tell he’s excited to have Wing back.
UPDATE (12:45 p.m.): Moving onto Idaho, Miles hits on all the points you’d figure he would. Lots of talk about respect and the fact that this program, Idaho, is a good one that had success on the lower level not too long ago before moving up to the FBS level.
- Miles talks about desire to “make every offense single-faceted” when discussing why LSU had so much success in the pass rush against UW. According to Miles, once Washington felt the need to drop back and pass virtually every down, it makes the Tigers even more difficult to defend, when they can zero in on a specific play pattern.
- Miles is asked what three things LSU has to improve in versus Idaho: 1. On offense: “We’d like to have the same balance we had offensively, but we’d like to throw it better.” 2. On defense: “Continue the same consistency to pressure the passer and stop the run.” 3. Special teams: Consistency again, this time with ball-handling by returners and good snaps, kicks, punts.Read more...http://www.tigerrag.com/?p=219552

Discovering depth will distinguish LSU ‘D’

Through two weeks their outmanned, overmatched opposition has raved about them.
“I’ve coached against national champion teams, and I’ve been a part of national champion teams,” North Texas coach Dan McCarney said in the aftermath of his team’s 41-14 loss in the season opener. “I know what those defenses look like, and the Tigers sure have one of those again this year.
“They just don’t stay blocked very long. When you think you have them, you don’t. When you think you have them cut off, you don’t. When you think you’ve sustained a block, you haven’t. That’s what I saw from standing on the sidelines. That’s a fast, physical and well-coached defense, as usual at LSU.” Read more...http://www.tigerrag.com/?p=219722

Zach Mettenberger said he felt more comfortable in his second start as LSU’s quarterback than he did in his first, and his performance reflected that.
The Tigers are emphasizing pass catching in practice this week after receivers dropped five throws in the 41-3 victory against Washington last Saturday.
The game against Idaho on Saturday night in Tiger Stadium is the final tune-up before LSU steps up in class and begins Southeastern Conference play.
So is this the week that the bolder passing game coach Les Miles and offensive coordinator Greg Studrawa have been promising shows up in a game?
“We want to throw the football down the field and more efficiently,” Miles said Monday at his weekly news luncheon.

BATON ROUGE – If football was as marketing conscious as baseball, there could be a great promotion at an upcoming LSU football game – maybe the one against Towson on Sept. 29.
Have “Josh Dworaczyk Day,” where the sixth-year senior from New Iberia plays every position on the offensive line, including tight end. He has over the years in practice. He could play 10 minutes apiece at left and right tackle, left and right guard, center and tight end.
Keith Osik played all nine positions for the LSU baseball team during a mid-week game about two decades ago. It could be done. Or maybe have Dworaczyk play a game at every line position between now and the end of the season.
He has already played left tackle, where he started Saturday in the win over Washington for injured Chris Faulk, and left guard, where he backed up starter La’el Collins in the season opener. He only has to move to the right three more times in a game. The No. 2 Tigers (2-0) host Idaho (0-2) at 7 p.m. Saturday in Tiger Stadium.
