Tigers thrive, advance to NCAA super regionals

The LSU baseball team found a conventional way to finish off a Baton Rouge Regional championship that was anything but conventional the first two days.

After having to overcome deficits that were borne of erratic pitching and defense to win their first two games, the Tigers finished things off with old-fashioned dominant pitching to defeat UL-Lafayette 5-1 on Sunday night in Alex Box Stadium.

Brent Bonvillain, Nick Rumbelow and Chris Cotton combined on a three-hitter as LSU (55-9) advanced to play Oklahoma in the Baton Rouge Super Regional beginning Friday or Saturday at The Box.

The Tigers had six key players unavailable at various times for various reasons during the weekend, including outfielder Chris Sciambra, who stayed home with a fever Sunday, but still put themselves within two victories of a trip to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

“It was weird,” senior first baseman Mason Katz said. “We had a lot of guys go down and we made some uncharacteristic plays, but we fought through it. You can’t say enough about Brent Bonvillain. He looked like he’s been starting all year. Rumbelow pitched like a big leaguer tonight. He was absolutely nasty.”

Bonvillain (3-0) made just his sixth start of the season and pitched a career-high 5.1 innings, allowing just one unearned run.

“I have no idea where (his performance) came from,” Bonvillain said. “It just happened, I guess. ... It was a great experience in front of 10,000 fans. It definitely had my heart going a few times. It was all just surreal.” Read more...http://theadvocate.com/sports/lsu/6110273-123/tigers-thrive-and-advance-to

Dandy Don's LSU Sports Report

The LSU baseball team took care of business last night and advanced to the Super Regionals with a 5-1 win over UL-Lafayette. With the win, the Tigers swept the Baton Rouge regional and pulled one step closer to their goal of reaching Omaha and winning it all, but first they’ll have to take on Oklahoma (43-19) this weekend in Super Regional action after the Sooners swept the Blacksburg Regional. (A little later in this report I'll have info about getting tickets for the Super Regional.)

Senior left-hander Brent Bonvillain got the start last night and pitched magnificently in the longest outing of his career. Bonvillain threw 5.1 innings allowing only three hits and one unearned run while striking out three. Nick Rumbelow and Chris Cotton combined for three hitless and scoreless innings and looked spectacular. Speaking of LSU pitching, last night after the game Coach Mainieri said “the team” will make decision Monday on the return of Cody Glenn. I'm not sure what to make of that comment, but I guess we’ll find out soon.

At the plate, the Tigers were led by Alex Bregman who ended 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, and by Raph Rhymes who went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Bregman now has 102 hits on the season, which is tied with Sean Barker (2002) for 8th place in school history. With three hits in each of the last two games, Bregman’s batting average is now up to .385, and he has become only the third LSU freshman to surpass the 100-hit mark. Mike Fontenot holds the record with 103 hits as a Tiger freshman.

Here's a quick scoring summary: The game remained scoreless through the first four innings as LSU stranded seven runners and couldn’t quite come through with the clutch hit when needed, although they did hit two or three deep balls that nearly left the ballpark. In the top of the fifth with bases loaded, Ty Ross drew a walk to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. LSU added three runs in the sixth on singles by Mark Laird, Jacoby Jones, and Bregman, and a clutch 2-RBI single by Rhymes. In the bottom of the sixth, the Cajuns got on board with an error by Bregman (his third in two days) and an RBI double to make the score 4-1. In the eighth, LSU added an insurance run on a Bregman broomstick (his sixth of the season).

The All-Regional team was announced after the game and LSU put six players on the team - Nola, Bonvillain, Ross, Katz, Bregman, and Rhymes. Bregman was named the Most Outstanding Player. Below is the complete team roster, followed by the Super Regional pairings and a press release on ticket information.

Now turning to football, with 89 days until the start of LSU's 2013 season, today we’ll continue our jersey countdown by remembering two All-American Tigers who played in the 60s - Billy Truax and John Garlington.

Billy Truax played tight end at LSU from 1961-63 and was a great one. In 1963 he was named All-American, and in 1964 he was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the second round of the NFL Draft. After the 1970 season, Truax was traded to Dallas where he was part of the Cowboys' Super Bowl VI championship team in 1971. Truax’s son, Chris, was an offensive lineman at LSU from 1988-91.

John Garlington, originally from Jonesboro, LA, played linebacker for LSU from 1965-67 and was named All-American in 1967. In 1968 he was drafted by the in the 2nd round (47th overall pick) by the Cleveland Browns, and he would go on to have ten successful seasons with the organization. After leaving professional football, Garlington worked as a Wildlife Enforcement Agent (game warden) with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries, where he died in the line of duty, from drowning, while investigating a poaching complaint near his home on the Mill Creek Reservoir near Saline, LA on February 10, 2000.

One little football recruiting tid-bit in closing: Yesterday I mentioned a couple of prospects that attended Saturday's special team camp at LSU, including the kicker from Hahnville, Craig Ford, who is rated No. 1 in the nation by prokicker.com. Later in the day I learned that while Ford did have an impressive outing, the player who won the field goal competition with a 55-yarder was a junior from Klein High School in Spring, Texas, Kyle Pfau. Pfau recently placed fifth at the Chris Sailor national kicking competition in Las Vegas, and both of his parents graduated from LSU. (His mother was a letterman on the women's swim team.) This kid has purple-and-gold in his veins, and I hear he’s a great student. I've added his highlights video to our Media Gallery.
