Donald Rumsfeld Visits Grand Rapids, Talks Syria
-
by Darren Cunningham
Reporter
GRAND RAPIDS,
Mich. – Former United States defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld spoke to
a crowd at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum.
He talked about his new book, “Rumsfeld’s Rules: Leadership Lessons in Business, Politics, War, and Life.”
He didn’t speak long before taking questions. One audience member asked Rumsfeld how he would approach the current situation with Syria and a potential military strike.
“The last thing we ought to be sending out is the signal that there is a redline, and we fired a shot across the bound or not to worry, it’ll be minimalist,” Rumsfeld said.
He asked what would the outcome would be if the us intervened in Syria.
“If someone walking down the street or in an elevator, I would say you either ought to change the regime or do nothing,” he said.
Rumsfled said it’s silly to ask whether or not the president has the right to use force. That’s a potential move Congressman Justin Amash takes issue with.
Amash has been outspoken about the president’s desire to possibly take action in Syria with a military strike. So the congressman is holding a number of forums around his district. He’s hearing from constituents on what they feel should or shouldn’t be done.
“I don’t know if I speak for all of us, but I’m awfully tired of war. I’m tired of the money that’s being spent on these wars that aren’t really going anywhere,” one Rockford area resident said.
She added, “But I also believe that we have a moral obligation to do something about the situation. Maybe the United States isn’t the answer. May the answer is with the United Nations.”
Amash responded, “Nobody is okay with what the government has allegedly done over there.”
“I think you do have to have more of an international coalition, and I don’t think military strike should be your first option. I think that should be a last resort,” he added.
Amash has several more stops in West Michigan tomorrow.

How would you like to have been TCU, because they also have a lot of very good football players that gave a high spirited effort only to be defeated at the hands of LSU.
TCU is still trying to stay a contender to go play for the big 12 conference championship.
Only thing is a lost to LSU is like a bag of bricks when you are trying to swim across the river.
LSU on the other hand is the victor and they know it, LSU almost put up five hundred yards of offense against the best defense in the big 12 last year, in the likes of TCU.

That
is not a issue with this years LSU fighting tiger football team.
Because the 2013 LSU football team is a big time contender to go take
the SEC crown away from Alabama on a real time basis starting now.

Gosselin: TCU Horned Frogs' normally stingy defense not up to par against LSU
ARLINGTON — Gary Patterson is one of the best defensive coaches in America.
He has some work to do with his 2013 Horned Frogs.
Defense
was supposed to be a TCU strength early this season as quarterback
Casey Pachall and running back Waymon James were working themselves back
from nearly year-long absences on offense.
The
20th-ranked Horned Frogs returned eight starters from the Big 12’s best
defense of a year ago, but that veteran bunch struggled against a
balanced LSU offense that seemed to take what it wanted when it wanted
in the season-opening 37-27 victory Saturday night.
It
didn’t help the Horned Frogs that one of those eight returning starters
— the best of the returning starters, in fact, Big 12 Defensive Player
of the Year Devonte Fields — sat out the game because of a suspension
for violating a team rule last spring.
Maybe the
Horned Frogs should have only suspended Fields for a half because they
were still in it at the intermission, trailing 16-10. They certainly
could have used his pass rush. The Frogs managed only two sacks of LSU
quarterback Zach Mettenberger and both came on defensive back blitzes.
Fields led the team a year ago with 10 sacks.
LSU
simply wore down TCU with ball possession. There just weren’t enough
stops by the Horned Frogs. One of the nation’s best defenses got pushed
around, and that wasn’t supposed to happen.
LSU
also was playing without one of its best players, leading rusher Jeremy
Hill, also because of a team suspension for an off-campus altercation in
the spring. But his absence essentially went unnoticed.
LSU
mounted touchdown drives of 80, 68 and 66 yards. The Tigers also added a
pair of 13-play, 69-yard field goal drives. So the Horned Frogs spent a
long time Saturday night without the football. Way, way too long.
TCU’s
defense allowed an average of 324 yards per game and 22.6 points last
season against some of the college game’s most explosive offenses and
quarterbacks in the Big 12. LSU had that and more through three quarters
Saturday night with a relatively unheralded cast, amassing 380 yards
for a 30-17 lead. Again, this wasn’t supposed to happen.
In
particular, the Horned Frogs had no answer for LSU wide receiver Odell
Beckham. They couldn’t stop him on runs (15-yard end around), receptions
(44, 26 and 26 yards) or returns — a 75-yard kickoff runback midway
through the fourth quarter that broke the game open.
The
game started off on the wrong foot for the TCU defense. LSU took the
opening kickoff and drove 69 yards for its first field goal. Brandon
Carter then fumbled away the ensuing kickoff, giving the Tigers the ball
back at the TCU 10. Four more plays produced a second field goal and a
6-0 lead.
So the TCU defense spent the first 61/2
minutes on the field against the No. 12-ranked team in the nation. There
were tired legs from the start. By the end of the night, LSU had run 80
plays for 448 yards in controlling the ball for more than 36 minutes.
LSU
rushed 48 times for 197 yards against a TCU defense that ranked in the
top 10 against the run last season, allowing only 105 yards per game.
Patterson needs to fix that. He also needs to find a pass rush, and that
could be remedied by restoring Fields to the active roster.
With
a game under their belts, Pachall and James should be more of a factor —
as should the TCU offense — going forward. Pachall was pulled in the
third quarter after throwing an interception. He returned in the fourth
quarter and finished the night with only nine completions for 75 yards.
And James rushed for just 33 more. Both were playing for the first time
since last September.
A productive offense will
ease the pressure on the defense. But this is a better defense than it
showed after one night. The Frogs need to start playing Gary Patterson
defense again.
-------
I
would say that this LSU football team is a true blue bona fide contender
to play for the SEC 2013 college football championship for real, all
year long. Because contenders really do content in a big time way...

Dandy Don's LSU Sports Report
To all of you who will be making the trip to Tiger Stadium
Saturday, please be aware that the game day parking lots have been
renamed. According to this article on LSUSports.net,
the name change of your lot WILL NOT affect your parking permit
location. LSU is recommending that you to read the article and become
familiar with the new system before making your way to campus for
Saturday’s home-opener against UAB. In addition to providing info on the
new parking lot names, the article also contains info on RV Parking and
first-come, first-served Disabled Parking.
Coach Les Miles met with the media yesterday for his weekly “Lunch with Les” presser to discuss last week's big win and this weekend's home-opener, and I've posted a full transcript of the conference here. And for your convenience, here is a quick summary of a few key points:
• Tahj Jones and Travis Dickson should be able to return to action Saturday.
• Anthony Johnson, who suffered a minor injury during last week's game, is said to be fine and ready for action.
• Miles remained vague on Jeremy Hill's status, saying simply that he will play when “we’re ready.”
• Miles praised Terrance Magee and said they are looking forward to expanding Magee's role. Interesting side-note: Now that Magee led the team in rushing and scored two touchdowns against TCU, all four LSU running backs – Magee, Alfred Blue, Kenny Hilliard and Jeremy Hill – have led the Tigers in rushing in a game, and all four have recorded multiple touchdown games in their careers.
• Miles said that Anthony Jennings “should certainly have played a little bit more than one snap, we think.” I found that comment particularly interesting considering how well Zach Mettenberger played.
In recruiting news, Cameron Robinson (6'6", 310, West Monroe, No. 3 on my list of Top LA Prospects) will be announcing his school of choice this afternoon at 12:30, and it will be broadcast live from his school on ESPNU. As soon as I hear who he chooses, I will tweet it to those of you who follow DandyDonLSU on Twitter. A couple of months ago I felt confident about LSU's chances with the massive offensive lineman, but at this point I just don’t know and wouldn’t feel comfortable giving LSU or Alabama greater than a 50/50 chance. Keep your fingers crossed, Tiger Fans.
In other LSU football news, wide receiver and return specialist Odell Beckham, Jr. was named to the Hornung Honor Roll after racking up 272 all-purpose yards vs TCU. Beckham Jr. joined TCU’s B.J. Catalon and Alabama’s Christion Jones on the list after contributing on both offense and special teams. Beckham’s 272 all-purpose yards in a single game ranks 6th in LSU's record book and was the highest total since Devery Henderson tallied 298 in what became known as the “Bluegrass Miracle” game against Kentucky on Nov. 9, 2002. Beckham finished with five catches for 118 yards, and averaged 34 yards per kickoff return, including a 75-yarder in the fourth quarter that set up the Tigers’ final touchdown.

LSU's Zach Mettenberger showed steady poise in opening game victory
LSU Tigers quarterback Zach Mettenberger (8) was poised throughout LSU's 37-27 victory against TCU.

- LSU Question of the Day: What was the highlight of LSU's win?
It was a different Zach Mettenberger who lined up under center and marshaled the Tigers' season opening victory against TCU Saturday. In handing off, stepping back to throw and leading the LSU offense, Mettenberger displayed a steady poise that he could only grab for moments last season.
It came out in his body language and in his results: 16 completions in 32 attempts for 251 yards and a touchdown. He could have had more yardage and better numbers, Miles said. The offensive staff figured with balls that should have been caught and others he threw away, Mettenberger had an 80 percent accuracy rate.
But it was more than just where the ball was going.
"The one thing Zach appears to me to have is a greater tempo," Miles said. "He understands what he's responsible to do in terms of coordinating the style of play and the motion and the adjustment there after. Understands the cadence and really is getting to play faster. I think his contribution is very significant and much improved."
Zach Mettenberger said Saturday's offensive performance is a good foundation for the rest of the season: Video LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger talks to the media after Tuesday's practice.
Mettenberger said his first test under fire with offensive coordinator Cam Cameron calling the shots went well.
"It felt good," he said. "Just a good first game for us to start the foundation of the rest of the year.
"We had a good communication standpoint. I was getting the play from Brad and Steven on the sideline, we were both seeing things pretty well. Hopefully we can keep that chemistry we had the rest of the year."
Landry caught eight passes and four of them gave LSU first downs. He said it came from the work Mettenberger did but also from being a year older.
"It comes with the growing," Landry said. "His maturity level and ability to grow as the year went on, he's becoming the quarterback everybody thought he could be.
"He let the game come to him. Not forcing anything, letting plays happen. Taking advantages of his opportunities."
Defensive players said seeing the offense perform so well boosted their efforts. Last year, the offense often let the defense down.
"I just wanted them to show everybody, out them at ease, everybody out there that was worried," safety Craig Loston said. "I think they answered a lot of questions.
It's one game in a row for Mettenberger, who last year appeared to be on a strong finish but stumbled in his final two games. The Tigers did struggle somewhat in the red zone offense, having to settle three times for field goals. Mettenberger said there was an overall execution problem.
"I've got to be a little more accurate," he said. "Receivers have to be more disciplined with their routes. At the end of the day we did a good job in the red zone."
Mettenberger said the team goal is to get 500 yards of offense every game. The Tigers were close Saturday thanks to the offense coming out and getting on a roll at the start.
"Things were clicking," Mettenberger said. "We had times last year where things were clicking. This time we just got started sooner." Read more...http://www.nola.com/
