Terry Bradshaw disses LSU offense, quarterback instruction

NFL analyst and four-time Super Bowl champion Terry Bradshaw is blaming rising sophomore and former five-star quarterback Brandon Harris’ lack of growth on LSU’s run-oriented offense and says developing as a passer will be a challenge in Baton Rouge.
The Hall of Fame quarterback didn’t pull any punches on Thursday when referencing the Tigers’ offense.

“You’re not going to learn a lot throwing the football at LSU, I’m sorry,” Bradshaw told KTBS in Bossier City, La. “If he had the right coaching, I like that kid. I remember that kid, he has a gun. Freshman got his chance and they pulled him.

“That kind of offense that they run, I don’t think they read defenses, it doesn’t look like they do. LSU especially, they don’t really coach them up down there.”

In limited action last season, Harris completing 55 percent of his passes for 452 yards and six touchdowns. Anthony Jennings entered spring practice as the first-team guy, but offensive coordinator Cam Cameron says the two will continue to battle for the starting job.

A Selection of Reader Responses to Terry Bradshaw's Comments on LSU

Posted 4/12/15

His comments were absolutely "inappropriate and in bad taste"... sadly however, Terry B is not all wrong. On the other hand, I am quite impressed with Brandon Harris. The few times I've seen him on camera (after last year's loss to Auburn and this video clip with Terry B.)… he handles himself with great poise and maturity. As talented as he is, I believe he will be a really special QB for LSU… just hope this is his breakout year.

I don't like anyone bashing LSU, but he is spot on with his comment about reading defenses, they just don't read defenses, they will run plays into the strength of the defense over and over again. Sometimes the truth stings a little.

I think this team will be very good this year and quarterback play will improve.  If not then changes need to be made. But to say that you won't learn anything at LSU is ridiculous and shows just how biased someone can be when they have lost respect for a coach.  Look at the number of players LSU has sent on to play in the NFL.  How quickly we forget about a season that was undefeated in the regular season and through the SEC championship.  Plus the great progress Mettenburger made under Cameron. We don't see what happens at the practices and the last thing you want to do is destroy a young QB's confidence and I think we made that mistake before.  Looking forward to a great season regardless of who wins the starting job.  Stay tuned Tiger fans because a great season is ahead for us!!!!

I say amen to Bradshaw's comments! He speaks the truth and it's high time someone called out LSU on the QB problems. Miles is not being held accountable for the failures at QB. I'm very happy that Bradshaw spoke out.

I think Bradshaw is resorting to cheap shots to boost recruiting for LA Tech. It's in very poor taste, because the young players get caught in the cross fire of his headline grabbing antics.

Terry B. certainly has the credentials to voice his opinion of the LSU quarterback situation and for it to carry relevance.  If Cam or Miles have a problem with it, prove him wrong!  I have no problem with the legendary QB challenging the LSU coaching staff with developing their QBs and teaching them how to read defenses.  Do that, and LSU will WIN.....the game, in recruiting and the individual player!

I took his negative comments as a challenge to Miles and Cameron to up the passing game. It might light a fire out of them and it certainly won't hurt. Except for QB play, LSU has all the talent necessary to make a run for the SEC and national championship. If the Tigers lay another egg at QB this year, the heat will be on both coaches.

Scott, I was at the event and that's not the only off color comment he made that night.  He made several other comments that were totally inappropriate.  I like Terry and know him but I can truly understand why he doesn't like speaking in Shreveport-Bossier where people know him.  I get the idea things come out of his mouth before he's had the chance to process how they may come across or be interpreted.  I don't believe he knows what's going on enough at LSU to go out on a limb like that.

Even though the comment is inappropriate, Coaches Miles and Cameron need this shock treatment. To continue to mismanage LSU's quarterback situation is not fair to the whole team and detrimental to the future of LSU football program.

Although i would like to see miles unleash Cameron’s coaching abilities and allow him to run the offense, i thought bradshaw's comments were inappropriate and in bad taste especially in front of Harris. It sends a terrible message for future recruits that their talents will be stifled at Lsu. I do think that miles approach to the offensive scheme is predictable unoriginal and not championship caliber.

I'm not offended by his comments and I don't feel they were inappropriate. I'm an alumnus and grew up in Baton Rouge and Shreveport.  I briefly played college football at a high level and I have coached football. The QB problem at LSU has become endemic. We are losing QB recruits because of the problem and it doesn't appear the Coaching staff is taking the appropriate measures to correct the problem. Example: why do you recruit dual threat QB's when you are running a Pro Style offense. This has happened over and over, and over and it is not working. There are other indiscretions - way to many to mention in this response. Obviously both current QB'S should continue to improve.  Baring injury most players do improve over time.

Talk about being put on the spot...Poor Harris. TB should know better. Nothing good could come out of that for Brandon...at all. Poor kid probably got an ear full upon return to campus. Harris got blindsided in my opinion.

I contribute and read you every day.  Bradshaw’s comments were in poor taste but he has a point. Brandon is the future for LSU.  Coach him up to his strengths.

I think Terry Bradshaw is spot on!! Who better than a 4-time super bowl winner and Pro Hall of Fame Quarterback to assess LSU's Q-back woes. And we didn't get any commits at the spot this year so i don't see it any better this year.Cam Cameron is a drop back q-back type coach[remember Mettinberger before Cam,and then after Cam got there]and Les seems intent on getting dual threat q-backs from high school. And after watching Les handle the JJ and Jarret Lee situation and incorrectly playing the same starter over and over and over again i can understand EXACTLY where Bradshaw is coming from!! And again,he's a 4 time super bowl champ and in the Pro hall of fame!!!! Its time for being politically correct and nice to be done with.College football is now a multi-million dollar business and we keep getting great classes that under achieve for some reason. Can't blame the kids ALL the time!!!! Have a great day Scott!!! Thanks for letting me vent. LOL

Mr. Bradshaw was a great QB but I think he overstepped his bounds by his comments about Harris starting or he will be critical of Cameron and Miles.  Last time I checked, he was not coaching the Tigers.  I would have much preferred Mr. Bradshaw offer his experience to both Jennings and Harris and help improve both of them. Along with all of Tigerland, I want one or both of our QBs to excel this coming season...and I believe that will happen. Keep the popcorn ready folks.

We are all critical of the LSU passing game and Terry is no different, just a bit more knowledgeable. He may be spot on but he's never at a LSU practice so we must take what he says with a grain of salt. On Fox, unless asked he should stick with the pro game, so I agree with your thoughts on that.

Sorry Scott, but Bradshaw just said publicly what everybody has been saying privately. There is no love lost between Bradshaw and LSU, so comment not surprising. As far as inappropriate, freedom of speech takes precedent!! Truth hurt?? I for one am sick of it. Who ever heard of band aiding your offense to protect the ineptness of your QB in Div 1 football. C'mon Les and Cam grow a pair and get with the program. If these guys arent smart enough to read a defense put someone in who can. Take a page out of Spurrier's playbook!!

Well now, Terry is not the brainiest guy on TV.  That being said, he said exactly what everyone has come to realize.  Poor play at QB has plagued the Tigers for all of Miles time.  Either they can't recruit them or they can't coach them up.  Miles is hard headed to a fault and it appears he will let that define an otherwise stellar career.  The only position worse to have than OC at LSU is DC at LSU because you have to throw a shutout every week to have a chance to win.

Sad fact is that Bradshaw may be correct. There is no good explanation as to why Jennings is still the starter. He is unlikely to ever be a good SEC quarterback. If Harris has the raw ability why can't they coach him up to the task? Is it possible he can't learn the offense?

Scott,  Terry B. has never liked LSU because he simply did not have the grades to enroll.  Shame he has taken this position of attacking LSU but it will come back to haunt him in more ways than one.

I think Bradshaw's remarks were uncalled for at this time. I believe the coaches at LSU can make a decision on who will play qb because they are there and I do not know where Bradshaw is now. He never liked LSU anyway. I agree with you 100 %. Bradshaw showed extremely poor judgement and taste with his remarks in public. I agree about the problems with coaching QB's @ LSU, but this should not be commented on publicly by such well known personalities as Bradshaw. He's always been a little "off the cuff" in his remarks, with little thought as to the effect.

I guess it is "who are you going to trust, Miles or your lying eyes? Or the common sense of what a pro football player like Terry Bradshaw says. And what you believe about LSU offense is your business.
