3-point stance: SEC in new BCS standings

November, 12, 2012
By Ivan Maisel | ESPN.com1. Two points leap out from the new BCS standings: first, in a four-team playoff, Alabama would still be in the field despite its loss Saturday. The Crimson Tide’s penalty for losing would have been minimized further because there is no home-field advantage at stake. Instead of it being No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 4 Notre Dame, it would be No. 1 Kansas State vs. No. 4 Alabama. So maybe every game won’t count under the new system.

2. Second, six SEC teams are ranked from No. 4 through No. 9. That is as much a reflection of the SEC’s lack of balance as anything. Three SEC teams -- Auburn, Kentucky and Tennessee -- are winless in league play. Of the six ranked teams, No. 4 Alabama, No. 7 LSU and No. 8 Texas A&M have a victory over a ranked nonconference team. No. 6 Florida and No. 9 South Carolina have ranked nonconference opponents awaiting them. Only No. 5 Georgia will avoid playing a ranked team outside the SEC.

3. All hail signing day 2011. The SEC and the Pac-12 likely will a have redshirt freshmen quarterback --
Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M and Marcus Mariota of Oregon, respectively -- on their all-conference teams. The Big East and the Big Ten likely will have sophomores Teddy Bridgewater of Louisville and Braxton Miller of Ohio State, respectively. The evolution of the high school passing game and 7-on-7 competition must be responsible. Kids arrive at college with skills more highly developed than ever before.

Thanks to the new kids on the SEC block, the Discover BCS National Championship Game will likely be the first BCS title game to feature two non-SEC teams since 2005. Alabama's 29-24 loss to Texas A&M did more than just show that the Aggies are for real in this league. It also showed that the rest of the country might not have to hear from the big, bad SEC at season's end.

SEC enthusiasts had to have a bittersweet feeling inside when they saw Texas A&M possibly ruin things for the conference. The league was so nice to bring the Aggies in, and this is how they repay it? Still, what a game and what a team Kevin Sumlin has over in College Station. This team should be good for quit some time.

But the SEC won't get shut out of the BCS. It'll likely still send two teams to BCS bowls, which would be two pretty big wins for the conference. Read more...http://espn.go.com/blog/sec/post/_/id/55470/sec-bowl-projections-week-12-2

Bowl Projections

BCS National Championship Game

Jan. 7, 8:30 p.m.
Miami, Fla.
BCS #1 vs. BCS #2
ESPN
Comment: With Alabama losing, Oregon moves into the No. 1 slot and will take on No. 2 Kansas State. It will mark the first time since 2005 the SEC doesn't have a team in the BCS Championship game.-- Jerry Palm
The champions of selected conferences are contractually committed to certain bowls, unless they are No. 1 or No. 2. (ACC: Orange; Big Ten: Rose; Big 12: Fiesta; Pac-12: Rose; SEC: Sugar). If a Bowl loses a host team to the title game, then the bowl gets first choice at a replacement team. The rest of the selection order for 2013 is as follows: Fiesta, Sugar, Orange.

Jerry Palm projects all 35 bowl games each week, including the BCS Championship Game. Check out his latest blog after Alabama lost and why he moved a few teams around. Follow Jerry Palm on Twitter at @jppalmCBS.

Sugar Bowl
Jan. 2, 8:30 p.m.
New Orleans, La.
SEC vs. at-large
ESPN
Comment: Well, here's something we haven't seen in a while -- the SEC champion in the Sugar Bowl. Alabama gets a game with Clemson, an at-large pick from the ACC.

Orange Bowl
Jan. 1, 8:30 p.m.
Miami, Fla.
ACC vs. at-large
ESPN
Comment: Florida State will win the ACC and land in Miami. The Orange Bowl gets the final pick and is left with Big East champion Louisville.

Rose Bowl
Jan. 1, 5 p.m.
Pasadena, Calif.
Big Ten vs. Pac-12
ESPN
Comment: With Ohio State ineligible for a bowl, Nebraska lands here as the Big Ten champion. Since no Pac-12 team will be eligible to replace Oregon, the Rose grabs Notre Dame to replace Oregon.

Nick Saban should be ashamed of the job he did in the Texas A&M game. dropping the lost to a lesser football team. Everybody knows what kind of a rip off the BCS is about Notre Dame EST.. shame on you Nick Saban. The best team might get shut out because of you?
