Whenever we the LSU fighting tiger football fans enter into the college football fields at LSU tiger stadium and around the country,
are we the tiger faithful just kidding ourselves can the LSU fighting tigers football team have a fair chance at winning the college football game against all comers with the current LSU coaching staff and players?"

ENGSTER: Statistically Speaking

Miles deserves credit for superb coaching in 2012

By JIM ENGSTER
Tiger Rag Featured Columnist

Les Miles did his best coaching in 2012. His team was not as talented as most of his other units and endured a myriad of injuries while posting a 6-2 SEC record and almost whipped the expected BCS champions from Tuscaloosa.
When comparing margins of victory, the 2012 Tigers were not as productive as six of the seven previous squads fielded by Miles at Death Valley.
Year      Miles vs. SEC      Pts     Allowed   Average Margin
2011     8-0                          280     67             26.6
2007     6-2                          343     218           15.6
2005     7-1                          214     114           12.5
2006     6-2                          220     131           11.1
2010     6-2                          220     165           6.9
2009     5-3                          178     150           3.5
2012     6-2                          180     160           2.5
2008     3-5                          207     254           (-5.9)
Total     47-17                      1842   1259         9.0

It is remarkable that a team as shaky as the 2012 Tigers could potentially finish with an 11-2 record and Top Five national ranking. It is a testament to the acumen of Miles that he guided this club so close to the BCS pinnacle.
Against SEC West foes other than Alabama, LSU was 5-0 while the Crimson Tide was 4-1 vs. the West in games outside a stirring 21-17 comeback vs. the Tigers.
LSU outpointed SEC West competition 151-125 while Alabama pulverized the West by a margin of 217-67. Still, LSU had Nick Saban’s crew on the ropes in the final minute of the bout at Tiger Stadium on Nov. 3.
Alabama edged LSU by a single game in the West, but LSU faced East beasts Florida and South Carolina as the Tide drew weaklings Tennessee and Missouri from the East.  Yet, LSU was five points short of having a better record in the league than ‘Bama.
With his seventh best team in eight years at LSU, Miles fought the BCS favorites toe to toe. The LSU boss should take a bow and wave the hat to a host of Tiger fans who appreciate the fact that he did more with less in a season in which Les passed (Bernie) Moore for second place on the LSU victory list.
Miles is 85-20 at LSU and was 28-21 in four seasons at Oklahoma State. He has one fewer loss in eight campaigns in Baton Rouge than he absorbed in four years at Stillwater.
Were LSU and Florida robbed?
It comes as no surprise that the teams playing for the SEC Championship this week faced the weakest conference schedule this year. Alabama and Georgia breezed to 7-1 league records against eight opponents who posted identical 24-40 records.
LSU and Florida could make cases that the strength of schedule negates the advantages that Alabama and Georgia have in their respective divisions. But Alabama and Georgia defeated the teams they had to beat to get to Atlanta-the Tigers and Gators, respectively.
SEC Team         Record of 8 SEC foes
Auburn                        40-24
Missouri                      39-25
Tennessee                 38-26
Ole Miss                      37-27
LSU                              35-29
Kentucky                     34-30
Florida                         33-31
Texas A&M                 31-33
South Carolina           30-34
Vanderbilt                    26-38
Mississippi State        25-39
Alabama                      24-40
Georgia                       24-40

Where to next? LSU didn't get any help in other games and now awaits bowl destination

Randy Rosetta, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune By Randy Rosetta, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune

There's a flip side to a team needing a series of dominoes to fall a certain way in order for good things to happen. When they fall in a different direction, the chain of events can lead to some unexpected results.
That's how this weekend of football played out for No. 9-ranked LSU. In a tough-to-digest nutshell for Tigers fans, not much went right.
LSU took care of its business with a lackluster 20-13 win against Arkansas. Nobody else participated in the Tigers' bid to climb into the hunt for a BCS bowl berth or even to fortify their chances for the Cotton Bowl or Outback Bowl.

Where does that leave LSU, which is 10-2 and likely to be ranked No. 5 or 6 in the final BCS standings next week after the conference championship games play out?
Not the Allstate Sugar Bowl or any other BCS game. Florida's win at Florida State makes it nearly inevitable that the Gators will be in the top four of the BCS standings, which means they are guaranteed a spot as an at-large and will get the SEC's spot in the Sugar Bowl.
That puts the Tigers in a battle for positioning in the other high-profile bowl games with SEC ties, and in a season when the league is exceptionally top heavy with six teams ranked in the top 10, LSU could find itself nudged down the totem poll a bit.

The Capital One Bowl is now likely a popularity contest among the Alabama-Georgia loser, LSU, Texas A&M and South Carolina - all of which will have two losses by next Sunday. In other words, the Tigers could be swimming against the current in their hope to go to Orlando.
So, as it stands now, the Tigers' most likely destinations are the Chick-fil-A Bowl on New Year's Eve in Atlanta or the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 4 in Arlington, Read more...http://www.nola.com/lsu/index.ssf/2012/11/where_to_next_lsu_will_have_to.html

SEC bowl projections: Week 14

November, 25, 2012
By Edward Aschoff | ESPN.com
The SEC is headed back to the national championship. With Alabama and Georgia both winning on Saturday, the winner of the SEC championship game is headed to Miami for the Discover BCS National Championship.

And now that the regular season is over, we also know the SEC has nine teams that are bowl eligible.

Florida's win against Florida State means the Gators (
fourth in the BCS standings) finished the season 11-1 and will be ranked within the top four of the BCS standings after the SEC championship. With the SEC champ heading to South Beach, the Gators will be heading to New Orleans for the Allstate Sugar Bowl, unless the loser in Atlanta somehow doesn't drop below the Gators. But it'll be hard for a one-loss Florida team with four wins over top-10 opponents to stay behind a two-loss SEC runner-up.

With the SEC having two BCS-bound teams and only one team available for BBVA Compass Bowl and AutoZone Liberty Bowl spots, the Compass Bowl will get the remaining SEC team, meaning the Liberty Bowl will get to make an at-large selection.

When it comes to the last few bowls, Vanderbilt becomes an interesting team. The Commodores are one of the hottest teams in the SEC and they could be up for the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Why? Well, the Chick-fil-A Bowl might not want another South Carolina-Clemson matchup. That means the Gamecocks could slip to the Gator Bowl. Also, could the Music City Bowl find itself in a position to take a 6-6 Ole Miss team over an 8-4 Mississippi State team after the Rebels blew the Bulldogs out? It's possible. …

The bowl picture is still cloudy, but here's our best shot:

  • Discover BCS National Championship Game, Jan. 7: Alabama
  • Allstate Sugar Bowl, Jan. 2: Florida
  • Capital One Bowl, Jan. 1: Georgia
  • AT&T Cotton Bowl, Jan. 4: Texas A&M
  • Outback Bowl, Jan. 1: LSU
  • Chick-fil-A Bowl, Dec. 31: Vanderbilt
  • Taxslayer.com Gator Bowl, Jan. 1: South Carolina
  • Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl, Dec. 31: Mississippi State
  • BBVA Compass Bowl, Jan. 5: Ole Miss

For some bowls, a shortage of eligible teams could be a problem this season.
In the Southeastern Conference, the problem is too many teams for too few slots in its top bowls.
The winner of the SEC Championship Game between Alabama and Georgia is virtually guaranteed a spot in the BCS Championship Game against No. 1 Notre Dame. Meanwhile, 11-1 Florida, No. 4 in the BCS standings, is all but certain to earn an automatic BCS slot if it stays in the top four, likely as the SEC champion’s replacement in the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
But that still leaves 10-2 LSU, 10-2 Texas A&M, 10-2 South Carolina and an SEC Championship Game loser with an 11-2 record to vie for spots in the Capital One, AT&T Cotton, Outback and Chick-fil-A bowls.
From LSU’s perspective, the Tigers’ bowl résumé is a strong one.
LSU is the SEC’s highest-ranked team besides the conference’s three BCS-eligible teams (Alabama, Georgia and Florida). The Tigers stayed at No. 7 in the season’s second-to-last BCS standings, moved up a spot to No. 6 in the USA Today coaches’ poll and fell one to No. 9 in The Associated Press Top 25.
LSU owns victories over BCS No. 9 Texas A&M (24-19) and BCS No. 10 South Carolina (23-21).
But when it comes to bowl selections, anything can happen unless automatic selections are involved. Ticket sales, TV appeal and the last time a team was in a bowl often are deciding factors. That can be a big mark against LSU when it’s compared to A&M, the surprise team of the SEC led by Heisman Trophy front-runner Johnny Manziel at quarterback.
Here’s a look at the four possible bowls for LSU:
Capital One Bowl. Read more...http://theadvocate.com/sports/lsu/4522382-123/cotton-outback-chick-fil-a-seem-possible

Gene Chizik: Wishes Auburn well (Hal Yeager / al.com)
AUBURN, Alabama – Gene Chizik took the high road after he was dismissed as Auburn's head coach Sunday, saying in a statement that he understood "changes must be made" and that he is "confident" in the school's leadership to move the football program forward.

Auburn dismissed Chizik on Sunday after a 3-9 season that ended when Alabama beat the Tigers 49-0 Saturday.

Here is Chizik's statement:

"I am very grateful for the opportunity that I had during the last four seasons to serve as the head football coach at Auburn University," he said. I’m extremely disappointed with the way this season turned out and I apologize to the Auburn family and our team for what they have had to endure.

"In my 27 years of coaching, I have gained an understanding of the high expectations in this profession. When expectations are not met, I understand changes must be made.

"While we experienced a tremendous low in 2012, I will always be proud of the incredible highs that we achieved, including three bowl victories, an SEC championship and a national championship.

"I want to thank Dr. Gogue and Jay Jacobs for the great opportunity they gave me. I’m confident in their leadership ability to continue to move this football program forward.

"I feel blessed to have been surrounded with so many great coaches, players and administrators that have worked relentlessly and dedicated themselves to this institution. I will miss not being able to continue to mentor these players on a daily basis. I’m confident these young men will continue to excel both on and off the field. They are a great group and I wish them nothing but the best. Read more...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlfAOSYOs4E
