Lucky Les Miles Might Be the Mad Hatter but He Belongs at LSU
By (Featured Columnist)
Wesley Hitt/Getty Images
He brought LSU a BCS title in 2007 even after losing two regular season games, both in triple overtime. And although he has been at the forefront of game clock controversies on more than one occasion he figured out a way to turn former three star athletes into Honey Badgers.
That is Les. He is a guy just like anyone of us. He wakes up every morning and puts his pants on one leg at a time. The only real difference is once those pants are on, he makes millions and wins football games in front of large SEC crowds. No big deal.
This man loves his players, family, and fans. He might be a bit of a nut when it comes to press conferences, but he means well.
He brings positivity to the team. He remains their one and only leader. One way he does this is by always wearing the infamous purple windbreaker, white khakis, and his LSU hat. He does this so that the players will always be able to find him on the sidelines. Even if it is 100 degrees outside.
Even with all the accolades, for some reason, a majority of LSU fans hate him and I am not sure why. What has he done to deserve the hate?
Seriously? What? Read more...http://bleacherreport.

LSU Football practice recap - video - See at: http://www.lsusports.net/After Scrimmage, Football Breaks for Christmas
)
by Michael Bonnette (@LSUBonnette), Associate Athletic Director/SIDBATON ROUGE - LSU will get a three-day break from football following
today's scrimmage as the eighth-ranked Tigers will hold their final
practice here before departing for the Chick-fil-A Bowl next Wednesday.
LSU and 14th-ranked Clemson will square off for just the third time on New Year's Eve at 6:30 p.m. CT in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The game will be televised unopposed on ESPN. Both teams enter the game with identical 10-2 records as LSU will be looking for its sixth season of at least 11 wins under Les Miles.
LSU will be playing a game on New Year's Eve for just the fourth time in school history and the first since a 38-3 win over Georgia Tech in the 2008 Chick-fil-A Bowl. Other New Year's Eve games for the Tigers came in the Gator Bowl in 1987 (def. South Carolina, 30-13) and the 1977 Sun Bowl (lost Stanford, 24-14) in El Paso, Texas.
Saturday's practice will serve as the eighth for the Tigers during bowl preparations. LSU will practice four times along with a walk-through once they arrive in Atlanta on Dec. 26.
"We kind of lightened the load the last couple of practices," Miles said. "We've been really going heavy earlier in the week. What we will do is finish with a situational scrimmage, kind of a game if you will. We will practice the teams and all of the situations that are significant in a football game. We will challenge some guys to have a very representative practice that will let us know where we are at in position and where we are ready for this game. In our preparation I think the attitude is very good."
Miles said that in addition to bowl practice getting the Tigers ready for Clemson, it's also given some of the younger players an opportunity for additional reps in practice, which will only benefit the team.
"It is night and day," Miles said of bowl practice compared to workouts during the regular season. "If you think about it, we have a 15 practice spring. We will practice about 14 times in this bowl practice. Our young guys are getting a lot of reps and it's only going to help them develop."
Miles said that it's important for the Tigers to get the most out of today's scrimmage and the players can then turn their attention to Christmas.
"They are really itching to get home for Christmas, get to shop and do what everyone else in America is doing right now, and not practice football," Miles said. "They are looking forward to shopping, eating too much and all of the goodies and smiling.
"But first, it's critical that we have a good effort in today's scrimmage. We're really going to run our offense, defense and special teams with looks against what we have seen our opponent do. Some pieces of the day will be kind of elementary practice - LSU vs. LSU. But this will be kind of a nice little review. We will review this game as a coaching staff. When we get to Atlanta, this film will be used in meeting time for the team so it's important that we get really good quality looks."

NCAA considering proposals to change recruiting
Story Highlights
- The NCAA released a package of proposals Friday that would change the recruiting calendar
- The package would also lift restrictions on how and how often coaches can contact recruits and allow athletes to accept more money for participating in non-scholastic events
- The proposals are expected to be voted on Jan. 19 at the NCAA's annual convention near Dallas
All the proposals are expected to be voted on Jan. 19 at the NCAA's annual convention near Dallas. If approved, they could take effect Aug. 1.
It was the first detailed glimpse into how the NCAA intends to rewrite its massive rule book and Jim Barker, chairman of the NCAA rules committee working on the plan, said the goal is "smarter rules and tougher enforcement."
If the package is approved, the overall result would provide coaches with more leeway in recruiting. The hope is that athletes will build more meaningful relationships with their coaches, and they will get more opportunities to showcase their skills in front of college and pro scouts.
One key recommendation would create a uniform recruiting calendar for all sports and allow coaches to begin contacting potential recruits after July 1 of their sophomore year, though coaches would still have to abide by the no-contact periods.
"The rules group believes that the uniform recruiting date will create significant ease of administration on campus, make the rules more understandable and allow for better recruiting decisions from both the coach and prospective student-athlete," said Barker, the Clemson president.
Those were the goals NCAA President Mark Emmert outlined more than a year ago when he backed the move to shrink the rule book following a year of major college scandals that included stripping a national champion of its title, a Heisman Trophy winner giving back his trophy, criminal allegations and the accusation that another Heisman winner's father was peddling his son's services.
In the wake of so much turmoil, Emmert held a presidential retreat in August 2011 to acknowledge that the governing body needed to focus more on enforcing the rules that go to heart of college sports — fair play, ethical behavior and tough penalties that dissuade coaches from considering cost-benefit analyses when making decisions about playing by the rules.
Some rules, Emmert acknowledged are simply unenforceable or so narrow they consume too much time and effort at the institution level and the NCAA level.
That's one reason another proposal would allow coaches to reach out players through any communication mode with no limitation on the number of contacts. College basketball coaches were given that ability in June, and now the working group Barker has led wants to extend those privileges to all sports.
Other proposals would allow:
— Schools to provide normal expenses, including travel expenses, for athletes representing the school at events such as goodwill tours and media appearances.
— Athletes to receive expenses and "reasonable benefits" associated with practices and competition with national teams, including tryouts.
— Amateur teams or event sponsors to award money beyond an athlete's expenses based on the performance of that athlete or team in all sports, not just tennis.
— Schools, conferences or the NCAA to pay for medical expenses and any related expenses for the athlete.
Barker acknowledged this is only the first phase of recommendations. The working group is expected to focus next on financial aid, playing and practice season rules.

NEW ORLEANS -- Terrance Broadway wasn't projected as Louisiana-Lafayette's starting quarterback heading into this season. Now he's a bowl game MVP.
Broadway passed for 316 yards and ran for 108, helping Louisiana-Lafayette repeat as winners of the New Orleans Bowl with a 43-34 victory against East Carolina on Saturday.
Alonzo Harris rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns for the Ragin' Cajuns (9-4), who briefly squandered a three-touchdown lead before moving back in front for good on Broadway's 14-yard scoring pass to Javone Lawson late in the third quarter.
Brett Baer added his second and third field goals in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Broadway, who took over as starter after senior Blaine Gautier's injury in late September, also ran for a 12-yard score.
Shane Carden passed for 278 yards and two touchdowns for East Carolina (8-5) but was intercepted in Cajuns territory by Jemarlous Moten in the fourth quarter as ECU drove for a potential tying or go-ahead score. The Pirates' Reggie Bullock rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns.
