Football shares LSU Tigers’ focus

GoldRing: "I believe that LSU head football coach Les Miles don’t know the difference between a good offensive football coach, then a hole in the grown.
The Florida and Alabama football programs were competing for the services of Boise State offensive coordinator ( Brent Pease ) back in 2011, before Florida eventually hired him. And I must say now also, I do see what all the fuss was about. The man is a very good advanced offensive college football coach.
Meanwhile, Les Miles was going into the 2012 college football season with (Greg Studrawa ) as his offensive coordinator.

Les Miles is a guy who can’t coach ladies and gentlemen. Until I see otherwise. LSU’s offensive football teams will be stuck in neutral for as long as Les Miles coaches the LSU football program.

Weak defensive football teams like the Clemson tigers will not show coach Les Miles offensive coaching failures. So the salesmanship selling of the Les Miles era at LSU will go on and on. 10-2, 9-3, or even 8-4, will be the excepted normal for the LSU college football program for years to come.

I think that if the Connecticut school teachers had some guns of their own in their classroom. Before that horror crime in Connecticut. The sick shooter would not have been able to kill so many children. Train your school teachers to defend themselves.

I am now hearing those lowdown politicians talking on HD TV about taking the lawful guns away from law abiding Americans, because of the massacre of the Connecticut children. They think that they can get enough anti gun votes to turn back the second amendment to the United States constitution. The trend to ignore the US constitution
seems to embolden the control freaks out of the woodwork. They are wrong. If I ever get to take some quiet action against one of them hyperspaces out running dogs politicians who will do anything for a vote. They will never run for a government office around me again. Recall all of the control freaks, and let's start over."

3 Chick-fil-A Bowl: LSU (10-2) vs. Clemson (10-2), Dec. 31, 7:30 p.m. ET

The Chick-fil-A Bowl is usually one of the best matchups outside of the BCS and 2012 certainly lives up to that hype. LSU was one defensive stop against Alabama from playing for the SEC Championship and won at least 10 games for the sixth time in eight seasons. Clemson is 1-1 against SEC opponents this year, beating Auburn in the season opener and losing to South Carolina on Nov. 24. The Tigers own one of college football’s top offenses, averaging 42.3 points a game. The chess match between Clemson’s offense against LSU’s defense should be one of the top O's vs. X's battles this bowl season.

LSU was focused on more than football on its second day of Chick-fil-A bowl preparations Friday.
Head coach Les Miles began the team meeting by addressing the mass murders at an elementary school in Connecticut that morning.

“I think we’re all connected in some way,” Miles said as he opened his post-practice news conference. “I think our team is shocked, like the rest of the country. There are young men in my team room that eventually will have family and can certainly sympathize with those fathers and mothers that are at that school waiting to see if their child is coming out.
“So our football team is also affected. It’s not something that goes unheard or unseen.”

A positive non-football happening Friday was the graduation of several Tigers. Miles said “11 or 12” players will have graduated by the time LSU plays Clemson on New Year’s Eve in the Georgia Dome.

As for football, Miles said the first two practices have been designed to get the players acclimated again to the speed of the game as “we ran them hard.” Thursday’s practice was the Tigers’ first significant football action since Nov. 23 when they defeated Arkansas 20-13 in the regular-season finale.
“Right now it’s easy to work them hard because they’re going to have breaks,” Miles said.

He added that he expects to have most of the game plan installed before the team takes its Christmas break Dec. 22, but LSU likely will “save a piece or two for our bowl site.”

The Tigers’ first practice in Atlanta will be Dec. 26.
Linebacker Kwon Alexander and guard Josh Williford have returned from injuries that had sidelined them since Oct. 6, and linebackers Tahj Jones and D.J. Welter and offensive lineman Evan Washington are back after having been ineligible all season.

“It’s nice to see some of those new guys that are now ready to play and healthy and eligible,” Miles said. “Kwon is playing just as happy as he can be out there. There’s a real enjoyment there. A lot of significant guys will return.”

LSU's Zach Mettenberger could be in comfort zone against Clemson defense

BATON ROUGE – It was a movie that surely put LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger in the spirit of the season – bowl season that is.
“Clemson’s Pass Defense” may be the can’t-miss flick for the holidays as the No. 8 Tigers (10-2) prepare to play No. 14 Clemson (10-2) in the Chick-fil-A Bowl on Dec. 31 in Atlanta.

“I’ve probably watched six of their games, broke down six of their games so far,” Mettenberger said during player interviews on Thursday night. “They give up a lot of big plays in the passing game. I think the least amount of passing yards I’ve seen them give up is like 300 something, so hopefully we’re going to look at that. If we have the opportunity presented, we’re going to do that – pass the ball vertically against them.”

Mettenberger also praised Clemson’s defense, which comes in at No. 81 in the nation against the pass with 250 yards allowed a game and 74th in total defense with 411 yards allowed a game.

“They have talent, just like anywhere else,” he said. “They’ve got a lot of speed on defense, but a lot of guys playing out of position just because they’ve been banged up. They bring a lot of blitzes, a lot of stunts. They line a lot of guys up in different spots. That’s something we’ve got to prepare for to be ready to see. They have talent everywhere.”

Clemson did lose starting defensive backs Bashaud Breeland and Garry Peters to injuries this season. But more significant is the fact that a rebuilding year was expected out of the defense as a new defensive coordinator, Brent Venables, entered the picture and switched to a 4-3. Venables, formerly of Oklahoma, replaced defensive coordinator Kevin Steele, who used a 3-4.

Clemson did allow more than 300 yards passing in four games this past season, including its last two games. Florida State put up 380 in a 49-37 win over Clemson. Boston College threw for 369 in a 45-31 loss. North Carolina State passed for 493 in a 62-48 loss, and South Carolina threw for 310 in a 27-17 win to close the regular season. Even Duke threw for 257 in a 56-20 loss, and Furman passed for 242 in a 41-7 loss. Read more...http://www.shreveporttimes.com/article/20121214/SPORTS0202/121214022/

Dandy Don's LSU Sports Report

Good morning, Tiger Fans.
First things first, I want to express my most sincere sympathy for the victims of yesterday’s tragedy in Newton, Connecticut. What a heartless, senseless, evil act. Please keep the victims and their loved ones in your prayers.

Congratulations are in order for nine current LSU football players and 16 other LSU student-athletes who graduated yesterday. The nine current Tiger football players are Josh Dworaczyk (sport administration), P.J. Lonergan (management), Kevin Minter (sport administration), Chancey Aghayere (interdisciplinary studies), Eric Alexander (interdisciplinary studies), Matt Branch (interdisciplinary studies), Russell Shepard (interdisciplinary studies), Nick Rice (finance) and Edwin Johnson (philosophy). A full list of all the student-athletes who graduated can be found here

Special congratulations are also in order for former LSU football player Eric Alexander and former basketball player Stanley Roberts who returned to school to complete their degrees after professional careers in the NFL and NBA, respectively. Alexander, who started all 14 games during the Tigers’ 2003 championship season, received his degree in interdisciplinary studies, while Roberts, who played at LSU in 1989-90 (back when I was in school at LSU) completed his course work in sport administration. Jim Kleinpeter of Noa.com published this interesting article on all that Roberts had to overcome to finally reach this point in his life. Congratulations to Alexander and Roberts for their perseverance and determination, and to all 1,672 new graduates of Louisiana State University.

While dishing out congratulations, another is in order for Eric Reid who was named to the Football Writers of America Association (FWAA) All-America Team. The award was his fifth first-team All-America honor this season. You can keep track of all the individual awards garnered by Tiger football players here

In recruiting news, John Curtis’ star senior linebacker, Duke Riley (6'1", 212, No. 12 on our list of Top LA Football Prospects for 2013) has received an offer from LSU. According to Jimmy Smith of Nola.com, Riley was asked to take a greyshirt in 2013 and officially join the team on scholarship in the spring of 2014. I suspect that if LSU ends up with an open scholarship after the 2013 class is all in, Riley would probably be offered the scholarship, but the staff is currently holding a few spots open for top targets like Kendell Beckwith (DE/LB, 6'3", 225, East Feliciana, No. 1 on our list) whose announcement is expected to come on January 4 during the Under Armour All-Star game. Speaking of Beckwith, Coaches Les Miles and Frank Wilson met with him this week, and my best source tells me that the LSU staff feels good about where they stand with the state's top prospect.Read more...http://www.dandydon.com/

Alexander, Williford, Jones, Welter and Washington back in the fold

By RICHARD FISCHER
Tiger Rag Associate Editor

Following the team’s second practice of Chick-fil-A Bowl prep, LSU head coach Les Miles met with the media Friday afternoon.
He said the two practices have been “designed to get them to the speed of the game” with a lot of running after not putting on a pair of pads since the Arkansas game Nov. 23.
The practices have consisted of a lot of “LSU versus LSU,” meaning little to none of the Clemson game plan has been inserted yet. They’ve practiced 7-on-7 and two-minute drill situations.

Participating in practice has been a pair of injured players as well as a few newly-eligible players. Linebacker Kwon Alexander (ankle) and guard Josh Williford (concussion) have missed several games at the back end of the season, but Miles expects both to be a full go in Atlanta. Plus linebackers Tahj Jones and D.J. Welter and offensive lineman Evan Washington - who missed the season with academic ineligibility - are also back in practice and will be able to play in the bowl game.
“It’s nice to see some of those new guys that are now ready to play and healthy and eligible,” said the coach.

Tight end Tyler Edwards also missed the season due to this academic issue, but Miles had not mentioned him as a player who’s back in the fold.
As for Alexander, the freshman linebacker broke his ankle versus Florida Oct. 6. He didn’t play again in the regular season although he warmed up gingerly before the season finale but did not play.

“Kwon is a happy as he can be out there,” Miles said. “When you’re a young guy and you get an injury, you just don’t really understand what a healing process means and how it happens. When I get to the other end and I feel good and my health is returned there’s a real enjoyment there, and I think Kwon is enjoying that.”

As for Jones and Welter - with all due respect to Washington, they’re the two newly-eligible players that figure to contribute on the field in Atlanta - Miles likes what he’s seen out of them through the first two days.

“Good news is they’re pretty veteran guys and they kinda recognize where they’ve been and what to do,” he said. “I saw reps that both of those guys took today and both looked good.”

Miles again chose to give no update on the status of tight end Nic Jacobs. He missed the last three games of the season via an indefinite suspension. The administration and coaches are being even more tight-lipped than usual in this case. Don’t expect him to play for LSU in the bowl game, and suiting up ever again is looking more and more unlikely every day.

Miles mentioned that he’d like to get the entire game plan in before the team leaves for Atlanta. He added that in the past he had waited to install a couple things when the team gets on site, but it appears he won’t be doing that this year. Read more...http://www.tigerrag.com/?p=237292
