Someone who was mixing their metaphors. "The cream of the crop" is one saying and "The cream always rises to the top" is another saying entirely. I believe both sayings are probably very old and based in agricultural societies.
First off the cream would be considered the best of the milk and it does rise to the top of the milk so if someone wants to make a reference to the best in someone coming out or the best people moving up in the world, The cream always rises to the top is a natural analogy.

In that same line of thought the "cream of the crop" would be a fairly natural way for a farmer to refer to the best part of an agricultural crop.

Dandy Don's LSU Sports Report

Good morning, Tiger Fans,
Yesterday the LSU football team continued their bowl preparations after spreading some holiday cheer at the Children's Hospital at Scottish Rite. Coach Miles and 22 Tiger players, including Odell Beckham Jr., La'el Collins, Michael Ford, James Hairston, Jarvis Landry and Bennie Logan, spent most of their time there inside an area designated as “The Zone” where they interacted with the children by playing air hockey, video games and decorating miniature LSU helmets. You can read more about their visit and check out a photo gallery at LSUSports.net. This type of community service really make me proud to be a Tiger Fan and reminds me that there’s more to LSU Football than winning games on the field.

With the big game against Clemson only four days away, I decided to take a deeper look at both teams’ stats and create the following chart. To me, the statistics clearly demonstrate what everyone's been saying all along - that the game will pit one of the nation’s top offenses against one of the nation’s top defenses. In virtually every offensive stat, Clemson clearly has the advantage. Likewise, in almost every defensive stat, LSU has the advantage. LSU also has an advantage in special teams and turnover margin, but Clemson has the advantage of committing fewer penalties per game. To be perfectly honest, after compiling this statistical chart I’m kind of second guessing the prediction I posted Wednesday of LSU 38 - Clemson 24. The game could very well be much closer than that, and if LSU's defense doesn’t come to play it could be an ugly way to end the year.
Stats - LSU vs Clemson
If you’ve got a little more time to kill on this Friday morning, here are a couple of fun, light-hearted videos to watch. In this first one, LSU's Emily Villere speaks with several of the LSU football players as they enjoyed the Chick-fil-A Bowl Welcome Party on Wednesday evening at Dave & Busters. In this second video, WAFB's Jacque Doucet jokes about Les Miles being caught in a dark tale of betrayal, secrecy, and chicken.
In basketball news, both LSU teams will return to action today. LSU's men will take on Houston Baptist at the PMAC, while LSU's Ladies will play Florida Gulf Coast on the road. The men’s game will be televised regionally by CST with a 7 p.m. tip-off. In yesterday's press conference, Coach Johnny Jones announced that Anthony Hickey is suspended... again... and will not play in today’s game. This will be the fourth time this season that Hickey will face disciplinary action and one has to wonder how many more chances Hickey will be given to get his act toge

College Football's Top 25 Head Coaches for 2012

Athlon Sports ranks the Top 25 best coaches in college football for 2012.

By: Steven Lassan | 5/23/12, 7:00 AM EDT

Ranking the coaches in any college football conference is a difficult task. Many factors play into just how successful a coach is at any school. How well are the assistants paid? Are the facilities up to par with the rest of the conference? Can the coach recruit or is he more of an x's and o's manager? Are there off-the-field or age issues to take into consideration? Has a coach built a program or continued the success from a previous coach? How is the resume outside of their current position? These questions and more were posed to the editors at Athlon Sports, as they were asked to rank the coaches of each of the six BCS conferences. One thing to keep in mind - the record is not always indicative of where a coach should rank in a conference or nationally among the top 25.

Ranking the Coaches: ACC
Ranking the Coaches: Big East
Ranking the Coaches: Pac-12
Ranking the Coaches: Big 12
Ranking the Coaches: Big Ten
Ranking the Coaches: SEC
1. Nick Saban, Alabama (5 years)
Alma Mater:
 Kent State (1970-72)
Overall: 146-54-1 (16 years)

There’s not much debate about this: College football’s top coach resides in Tuscaloosa. Saban has led the Crimson Tide to two national titles and four straight seasons of at least 10 victories. Saban’s track record is impressive, going 48-16 in five years at LSU, 34-24-1 in five seasons with Michigan State and a 9-2 mark in 1990 with Toledo. Saban is certainly one of the most demanding coaches in college football, but there’s no question he knows what it takes to succeed. Saban has returned Alabama to national prominence and has brought in some of college football’s best recruiting classes over the last five seasons. As long as Saban sticks around in Tuscaloosa, expect Alabama to be ranked among the top 10 teams every preseason. And after winning two titles in five seasons, expect the Crimson Tide to only add to that total in the near future.
2. Urban Meyer, Ohio State (First year)
Overall Record: 104-23
The resume is as complete as it gets: Two BCS National Championships, four conference titles, three conference Coach of the Year awards, one Heisman Trophy, one national Coach of the Year honor and the Sports Illustrated Coach of the Decade (2000-2009). Meyer’s success is unquestioned; he wins and he wins big. He built Bowling Green into a conference contender in only two seasons before taking Utah to a BCS bowl in two short years in Salt Lake City. In his second year at Florida, he earned his first BCS Crystal Ball. After a second title with the Chosen One under center, Meyer took a brief respite from the sideline in 2011. He returns to the coaching ranks renewed and reinvigorated — and back in his home state at the Big Ten program with the most natural and financial resources in the league.
His ability to recruit was on full display at the close of the 2012 cycle and his offensive game plan is as proven a system as there is in the collegiate playbook. The only crack in his armor is the health concerns — aka his dedication. He coached only six years at what could be considered the second-best job in the nation, won championships, and simply walked away. Other than his long-term commitment, there are not too many better options in America.

Busy LSU coach Les Miles makes times for those who need a spare

BATON ROUGE — Les Miles had just been talking about his favorite Christmas moments.
“I think all that stuff that happens to us when we’re growing up just seems to fail to compare to watching somebody who still believes in Santa Claus open a gift and go … ‘Dad, look!’ I don’t know if there’s a gift that can equal that,” the LSU football coach said last week as he prepared for Christmas.

Little did Miles know how much his own visit to a troubled family could provide a moment as cherished.

Adam Corbett, 18, had just reentered the hospital last August after a bout with T-cell Lymphoma cancer that he and his family were told they had beaten last summer. Instead of freshman orientation, Corbett found himself preparing for more chemotherapy treatments.
Corbett’s father, former LSU baseball player Ronnie Corbett, and his family — wife Annie, 20-year-old daughter Emily Rose, Adam and 16-year-old daughter Molly — had met and spoke briefly with Miles from time to time over the years as they went to the same Chapel on the Campus church.

The family reached out, and Miles quickly got in touch with Ronnie.
“I’m so sorry,” Miles told Ronnie, who played baseball for the Tigers in the early 1980s and remained in Baton Rouge. “I want to help. What can I do?” Read more..http://www.shreveporttimes.com/article/20121227/SPORTS0202/121227028

LSU showing support for long-time commitment Jeremy Cutrer

James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune
Jeremy Cutrer has never wavered since committing to LSU in February. - (Ellis Lucia, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune)
As 2012 comes to a close, and LSU’s Class of 2013, which currently has 23 commitments, is rounding into shape, the Tigers’ staff is pouring its efforts into final few players that can make a good class, great. They, however, are also keeping tabs on the current commitments and staying on top of those that have yet to qualify.

One such player is long-time commitment, Jewel Sumner’s Jeremy Cutrer.  Since giving his pledge to the Tigers in February, the 6-foot-2, 160-pound defensive back, has never wavered and has every intention of suiting up in the purple and gold next year. The only question that remains, is whether he’ll complete the requisite classwork in time to enroll.

“I have some classes I have to make up,” Cutrer said, addressing his eligibility issues.  “I didn’t do that well in English and American History as a freshman, so I have to retake those. I am supposed to be retaking those next semester.

“I just have to focus on my books and not clown around in the classroom. I will get it done. The teachers know what is best for me, so I have to just listen to them and make sure I do my work.”
Cutrer has been focusing much of his time away from the field on his studies and his family, making it difficult for him to find the time to visit Baton Rouge.

“During the season, I spent a lot of time in the hospital visiting my grandma while she was in there,” he said. “She is fine now, but that took up some of my available time to visit LSU during the season. That, and transportation is hard to come by sometimes.”
So, before the recent contact period ended, LSU defensive backs coach Corey Raymond paid Cutrer a visit to express his support.

“He just came by to check on me and make sure I am on top of my school stuff,” Cutrer said. “I told him I would take care of it, and he told me that LSU is there for me if I need them.”
Cutrer said he’s excited to travel to Los Angeles next week to take part in the 2nd annual Semper Fidelis All-American game.
