LSU vs Tulane in '72 -- awesome game   (Posted on 12/27/12 at 4:51 p.m.)

meant to finish this earlier, closer to Dec 2nd, but work and Christmas slowed me down. Now, if you are of the t/l, d/r school -- don't click. You'll hate this entry.

Largest crowd to see a game in the South at the time, and of odd stats, the largest crowd to see a college football game at night at the time. Incredible ending.Found some good pictures and some rationale for why Tulane "de-emphasized" football in the early '50's. Older folks (45+) or maybe some of you in or from New Orleans might like this:

USC quarterback Matt Barkley won't play in the Hyundai Sun Bowl because of a shoulder injury, effectively ending his college career.

According to the school's Twitter account, Trojans coach Lane Kiffin announced on Thursday that redshirt freshman Max Wittek will start against Georgia Tech in the New Year's Eve bowl.

Kiffin had previously said Barkley, who has been nursing a sprained right shoulder for more than a month, would be re-evaluated when the Trojans arrived in El Paso, Texas for the game.

Paskwietz: Barkley leaves legacy of class

With the announcement that Matt Barkley will not play in the Sun Bowl, it's time to reflect on a career that rivals the best in Trojans history, writes Gary Paskwietz. Blog

Barkley tweeted on Thursday that he was not medically cleared to play in the game. He has not made a decision on whether or not to play in the Jan. 26 Senior Bowl, which could have a sizable impact on his stock for April's NFL draft.
"Doctors haven't cleared me to play, so I won't be suiting up on Saturday. I'll be here with my team to finish strong. Proud to be a Trojan!" Barkley tweeted.

A senior and one-time Heisman Trophy contender, Barkley has been sidelined since suffering the injury late in the fourth quarter of a Nov. 17 USC loss to rival UCLA.
Wittek, a 19-year-old redshirt freshman, made his first career start in USC's next game, a regular season-ending loss to Notre Dame, and completed 14 of 23 passes for 186 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Wittek has been preparing to start the Sun Bowl for the last two weeks, at first splitting first-team quarterback reps with fellow freshman Cody Kessler and then taking the majority of late. College football dynasties come around about once per decade. Check out the eight dynasties that college football has seen, starting with Minnesota in the 1930s and ending with Nebraska in the 1990s. College Football Dynasties »
