Mardi Gras and Super Bowl

By Tinker Town Tiger:

The night air was heavy with the early morning mist. New Orleans was a nighttime kinder town. With neighborhood barrooms just about on every corner. Famous for the Nightclub night life in the French Quarter and Bourbon street. The early morning time of day was Randolph favored moments, starting his work day. Because all of that night life stuff were fast asleep.

He would walk five blocks to hop onto the expressway city bus. So he could make his connection to ride another city bus across the mighty Mississippi river, to get to his job each day. Clerk for a local big time car dealer.

He could not help but notice that a lot of the neighborhood trash cans were missing the top of the cans. Trash scattered here and there. He knew of course that a neighborhood animal was the reason. That cat and mouse game went on each morning that Randolph went to work back then.

He would laugh telling everyone riding the buss, going to work also, how resourceful the neighborhood trash bandit was. Because to this day. No one really knows the real identity of (Top Lefter) the early morning neighborhood track can bandit. Top lifter is now in heaven these day, along with Randolph. I can't wait to get up there also. Or maybe not just yet. So I can finely know the identity of Top lifter the early morning trash bandit.

Super Bowl And Mardi Gras? New Orleans Calls It 'Super Gras'

AP  |  By By STACEY PLAISANCE Posted: 01/17/2013 12:04 pm EST  |  Updated: 01/18/2013 8:09 am EST

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans is bracing for record crowds as the biggest sporting event of the year, the NFL Super Bowl, collides with Mardi Gras season in what many locals are calling "Super Gras."

Mardi Gras floats are getting finishing touches, including one float being touted as the biggest the city's Carnival has ever seen. Bakeries are hiring extra hands to decorate the thousands of king cakes, a traditional Mardi Gras treat, being pre-ordered for the Super Bowl on Feb. 3. Mardi Gras falls nine days later on Feb. 12.

The city's hotels are more than 90 percent occupied for the weeks before and after the big game, according to Stephen Perry, president of the New Orleans Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau.

"We are ready to give the world a show," said Perry.

Carnival season, with parades, parties and masked revelry in the weeks before Mardi Gras, is always one of the most expensive times of year to visit New Orleans. But Super Bowl weekend has driven prices higher than usual. Smaller boutique-style hotels that usually go for $300 to $500 a night during Carnival are as high as $800 during Super Bowl. Rooms at some major hotels are up to $2,000 a night, according to online listings.

Carnival parades will not be held downtown during Super Bowl weekend, but dozens will roll in the city on the weekends before and after the game. Some sports fans are extending their stays to take in the masked riders tossing beads, costumed marching groups and make-believe royalty. Parades normally held in the suburbs will take place as scheduled on game weekend.

"There will be so much energy in the street," Perry said. "It's a very unique situation to have Super Bowl, which is truly an experience of a lifetime, coinciding with a unique cultural event like Mardi Gras." Read more...

Dandy Don's LSU Sports Report

Good morning, Tiger Fans,

Now that all of the early enrollees are in, the deadline for entering the NFL draft has passed, and national signing day is only 19 days away, the hot topic of discussion among LSU football fans is recruiting. Coach Miles and staff will be entertaining several prospects on official visits this weekend including many who are already committed to LSU, plus wide receiver Kevin Spears (6'2", 190, Holy Cross, No. 27 on our list of Top LA Prospects for the Class of 2013) and tight end Cethan Carter (6'4", 240, Rummel, No. 24 on our list). Spears currently holds a full offer and I wouldn't be surprised at all to learn of him committing to LSU this weekend. Carter has been offered a greyshirt. If any news breaks, I'll be sure to let you know by tweeting it to those of you who follow @DandyDonLSU on Twitter, and then posting it here and on my list of commitments. Tahaan Goodman (S, 6'3", 195, Rancho Cucamonga, CA) was originally schedule to visit this weekend, but reports are that his visit has been rescheduled for January 25.

Today I'll continue revealing my list of the Top LA Prospects for the Class of 2014 by posting numbers 26-30, and then I’ll wait until Monday to reveal the next group of five. The response I've received to the list so far has been very positive, and I'm glad many of you are enjoying it. It's easy to see that this 2014 class is going to be very special.
26. George Moreira (RB, 5'9", 195, John Curtis)
27. Glen Cuiellette (ATH, 6'1", 204, Mandeville)
28. Jermaine Roberts (DB, 5'11", 175, St. Augustine)
29. Jared Cornelius (WR, 6'1", 185, Evangel)
30. Raymond Crochet (QB, 6'1", 185, Salmen)

For the complete list-in-progress which now includes 26-50, please click here.

It was also nice hearing from many of you about my preliminary projected LSU football depth chart, and I've made a few adjustments based on your feedback. One thing I forgot to mention yesterday is that I tried to limit the chart to a maximum of three-deep at each position, so if you didn't see a player’s name included please do not assume that he is no longer on the team.
Anybody ready for some LSU baseball? The 2013 season starts February 15 against Maryland at Alex Box Stadium, and I can hardly wait. LSU will play 16 of its first 17 games at The Box before opening SEC play against Mississippi State in Starkville. The only road game during the non-conference part of the schedule will be at UL-Lafayette on Tuesday, February 26.

Season report card: LSU

January, 18, 2013
By Chris Low | ESPN.com

The report cards have been handed out on the Bayou, and we take a look at the Tigers’ grades:
OFFENSE: The Tigers started showing signs of life on offense, particularly in the passing game, in the second half of their 21-17 loss to Alabama and had their best stretch offensively the next two weeks in wins over Mississippi State and Ole Miss. It was a rough first part of the season for first-year starting quarterback Zach Mettenberger, but he played better down the stretch. The Tigers were plagued by injuries and other defections in their offensive line and probably waited too long to unleash freshman running back Jeremy Hill, who had just 13 carries in the Tigers’ first six games, but finished with 755 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. There just wasn’t enough consistency offensively, evidenced by the fact that LSU finished 10th in the SEC in total offense. The Tigers were held to 20 or fewer points in four of their eight SEC contests and didn’t score a touchdown in their 14-6 loss to Florida. Their 219-yard performance in their 25-24 meltdown against Clemson in the Chick-fil-A Bowl loss was an ugly end to what was a lackluster season on the offensive side of the ball. GRADE: C

DEFENSE: Buoyed by one of the most talented defensive front-sevens in college football, LSU played at a high level for most of the season. The Tigers finished No. 8 nationally in total defense (307.6 yards per game) and No. 12 nationally in scoring defense (17.5 points per game). They held seven of their eight SEC opponents to 23 or fewer points and kept eight of their FBS foes to 17 points or fewer. For the most part, John Chavis’ defense did its part. LSU was masterful in making the right adjustments and putting the clamps on Johnny Manziel in the 24-19 win at Texas A&M and lost at Florida despite giving up just 237 yards and 14 points. The Tigers also tied for the SEC lead with 33 forced turnovers. Not being able to get off the field at key times, though, keeps LSU’s defensive grade from being an A. Florida put together touchdown drives of 77 and 85 yards in the second half to escape. Alabama’s game-winning touchdown drive in the final 1:34 was a real killer. Up until that point, the Tigers had been dominant defensively. LSU also couldn’t get Clemson stopped at the end of the Chick-fil-A Bowl loss and gave up a 26-yard completion on fourth-and-16 to keep that drive alive. GRADE: B+

OVERALL: The Tigers had some big wins. They won at Texas A&M and knocked off South Carolina at home when the Gamecocks were ranked No. 3 nationally. The 21-17 loss to Alabama was disappointing, but at least the Tigers’ offense came alive in that game in the second half. They say last impressions are what counts, and the final image we have of LSU in 2012 is the Tigers gagging away that game to Clemson in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Hill didn’t carry the ball in the fourth quarter after rushing for 124 yards on 12 carries in the first three quarters, and LSU played right into Clemson’s hands by throwing the ball two straight times late and allowing Clemson to keep all of its timeouts and drive for the winning field goal. That loss put a stain on an otherwise solid 10-win season -- a season that started with the Tigers ranked No. 3 nationally and thinking national championship. GRADE: B-

Treadwell’s commitment to Ole Miss is of seismic proportions

Posted on January 18, 2013

Let’s be clear from the start: This has nothing to do with Ole Miss’ recruitment of defensive end Robert Nkemdiche and defensive back Antonio Conner. This is not meant to diminish their importance to the Rebels’ 2013 recruiting class.
But the commitment Ole Miss gained Thursday afternoon from Laquon Treadwell was of earthquake proportions in the world of recruiting by Mississippi schools.

Treadwell is from Crete, Ill., which is 30 miles south of Chicago and 590 miles north of Oxford. He is rated by the recruiting service Rivals as the No. 1 wide receiver prospect in the nation and the No. 10 overall prospect. He is 6-foot-3, weighs 190 pounds and runs 40 yards in 4.5 seconds. He led Crete-Monee High to its first state championship this past season. He received scholarship offers from just about any big-time school one can name, including Alabama and LSU. Treadwell narrowed his favorites to Ole Miss, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

More than once at his announcement press conference, Treadwell said he chose Ole Miss because of head coach Hugh Freeze, whose team recently finished 7-6 in his first season when most experts said he would be lucky to win four games.

And here is what every Mississippian who is a fan of college football, and particularly recruiting, needs to understand: Before Freeze, the commitment of Treadwell would’ve never happened at ANY of the state’s universities.

The old mindset: Treadwell is the No. 1 wide receiver in the nation. He lives 600 miles away. Our time would be better served trying to sign a good but less-talented player closer to home that every school in the country isn’t chasing. Frankly, the old mindset was that a college program in Mississippi wasn’t worthy of a player with Treadwell’s credentials.
That is clearly not Hugh Freeze’s way of thinking. He will cast in the waters where the true lunkers live. If he gets a nibble, he will keep casting. Relentlessly.

Freeze obviously knows his X’s and O’s on offense, directing  a Rebel unit that averaged 31 points per game (nearly double what Ole Miss averaged in 2011 when it won two games). His up-tempo style is attractive to playmakers. And give Treadwell credit for not shying away from competition. The Rebels return all three starting receivers.

The bottom line is, mamas like Hugh Freeze, who promised from the start to hire assistant coaches “who will capture the hearts of our players.” Recruits like him, too. Other highly-rated prospects say Freeze is the reason they are still considering Ole Miss.
Fans of other schools will roll their eyes at that, and that’s the natural knee-jerk reaction. But it’s the hard-boiled truth.

Freeze destroyed a football myth in the 2012 season. It’s always been said that a team can’t play emotionally charged every week of the season. The Rebels did — 13 times. And after three tough Southeastern Conference losses by a total of 10 points, they had every reason to feel sorry for themselves and allow it to affect their next week’s performance. But it never did. They didn’t always win, but they always left it all on the field. I’ve covered Mississippi sports for 37 years in some capacity and I could never have written that about another football team I have seen during that span.

Again, it’s because of Hugh Freeze, who was basically hand picked by Rebel legend Archie Manning last December to replace Houston Nutt.  Now we know why.

Those who cover recruiting say the odds are good that Ole Miss will sign Nkemdiche, the consensus No. 1 recruit in the country, and Conner, who is rated by one service as the No. 2 safety prospect in the country. Those would be landmark pickups.

But the earthquake was Treadwell, who doesn’t have an older brother on the Ole Miss team as Nkemdiche does. Nor does he live 25 minutes from Oxford, as Conner does.

He has a former teammate and close friend Anthony Standifer on the team. But the bottom line is, Treadwell came because he wanted to play for Freeze.
Stay tuned. I have a feeling the seismic rumblings have just begun.
