Dandy Don's LSU Sports Report
Good morning, Tiger Fans,
I know a lot of you out there could use some good news about LSU football, so here it goes.... Maquedius Bain has now officially/publicly committed to LSU. Bain (DT, 6'3", 305, Fort Lauderdale, FL) had said that he would make his official public declaration during tomorrow’s Under Armour All-Star game, but he decided to go ahead and announce early. I'm hoping his declaration will serve as a small dose of medicine for many Tiger Fans still feeling sick about the New Year's Eve letdown.
Bain is a big-time prospect that chose LSU over offers from Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma, Tennessee and others. According to a report by Gerry Hamilton of 247sports, Bain stated, “Les Miles is a great coach ... And I want to play under Brick Haley.” Bain will likely begin his career at LSU as a defensive tackle, but could also play offensive guard.
With Bain, LSU now has 25 commitments and is ranked No. 6 in Rivals team recruiting rankings. As I've said before (and as my father, Don, always said), it's not how highly a team's class is ranked that’s important, but rather how well it meets the team’s needs. This LSU class is actually doing quite well in both measures, and could do a lot better if a couple of LSU's top targets come on board.
One of the team's biggest remaining needs is for defensive ends, and LSU has its sights on two of the very best. Of course, the two I'm talking about are Kendell Beckwith (DE/LB, 6'3", 225, East Feliciana), who is No. 1 on our list of Top LA Prospects for 2013, and Robert Nkemdiche (DE, 6'5", 265, Loganville, GA), who is the No. 1 prospect in the nation.
Beckwith will be making his announcement tomorrow during the Under Armour All Star game (4 p.m. CT, ESPN) and I am feeling more optimistic than ever that he will chose LSU over Alabama. My best source told me yesterday that the staff feels the same way.
Nkemdiche, the No. 1 prospect in the nation, is not expected to announce anytime soon, but things are really getting interesting. Sources on the LSU side feel good about him being a Tiger, and this video interview by Jimmy Smith of nola.com makes it very clear that he likes LSU a lot. However, there are unconfirmed reports that Nkemdiche has been recruiting for Ole Miss during the Under Armour All-Star practices. At this point I'd say Ole Miss probably has a slight lead simply because of his brother being there, but you never know.
Stay tuned, Tiger Fans, this is when things start to get really interesting on the recruiting front. Read more...http://www.dandydon.

LSU's Les Miles sits at a familiar crossroads after lackluster offensive season: Commentary
Loyalty is an honorable personality trait without question. Something to seek in friendships and professional relationships. In big-time sports, though, sometimes a good trait can lead to a lot of other things, especially stubbornness and sometimes failure.
LSU Coach Les Miles has been down this road several times before. And most of those times, he has made the necessary tweaks and adjustments to get things back on track.
Well, here we go again.
Just a year removed from guiding the Tigers to the cusp of greatness, Miles finds himself at a crossroads with a major component of his program.
LSU Coach Les Miles and quarterback Zach Mettenberger are two keys in whether the Tigers' offense can take a quantum leap forward in 2013. Brett Duke, NOLA.com | Times-Picayune
1. Miles is going to be the Tigers' coach as long as he wants to be their coach. Get used to that.
2. Miles has forgotten more about football than 99% of anybody reading this has ever known, including the writer. If you think otherwise, you might as well stop reading and not waste your time.
3. Placing too much importance (i.e. fretting too much over) on the outcome of the Chick-fil-A Bowl, is really kind of silly. Being upset about a BCS Championship Game loss, OK I get that. Any other bowl, not much of a reason to get worked up one direction or another. If you want to be frustrated, base it on a season worth of problems -- there's no shortage of ammo there.
Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming ...
It's no secret that LSU's offense was a problem area this season. No need to waste any time going into minute detail about that. Miles shouldered that on Monday night after his team's 25-24 loss to Clemson in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.
The Tigers were effective at times running the ball this season, and then went through a three-game stretch where they threw the ball as well as anybody in the SEC. Consistency and balance, well those things were hard to find.
There are some reasons (and no -- not excuses) for the problems. Lots of flux in the offensive line was a primary problem. And junior Zach Mettenberger simply wasn't as good as projected, including by the media.
Mettenberger flashed some of the necessary physical tools at times. But he has a lot to work on, especially and maybe most importantly, he needs to hone his skills as a leader -- something Matt Flynn mastered in 2007 with a championship team around him. Read more...http://www.nola.com/

LSU players shoulder the blame for Chick-fil-A loss

“Definitely want to apologize to the Tiger Nation for letting them down,” consensus first team All-American safety Eric Reid said. “In the most critical part of the game, it was completely my fault.”
Reid helped allow a crucial, 26-yard completion from Clemson quarterback Tahj Boyd to wide receiver Hopkins DeAndre Hopkins that converted a fourth-and-16 play with 1:22 to go and LSU leading 24-22. Cornerback Tharold Simon was also in coverage against Hopkins, who riddled LSU’s secondary all night with 13 catches for 191 yards and two touchdowns.
Six plays later, Clemson kicker Chandler Catanzaro booted a 37-yard field goal as time expired to give the No. 14 Tigers a 25-24 upset over No. 8 LSU at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
“I wasn’t tight enough in coverage,” Reid said. “And they were able to convert.”
Reid got too close to Hopkins two plays after the completion and was guilty of pass interference, which gave Clemson 11 yards and a first down at the LSU 42 with 47 seconds to play.
Defensive coordinator John Chavis did not offer any excuses for the back breaking fourth-and-16 completion.
“We thought it was the right call at the right time,” he said. “Pressure didn’t quite get there, and we didn’t quite stay on top of the route. It stings right now.”
There was quite a bit of blame to go around. LSU’s offense ran all of six plays in the fourth quarter, and five were passes even though the Tigers rushed for 97 yards on 10 carries in the third quarter.
“We had to throw the football,” LSU head coach Les Miles insisted. “We were in a position where they outnumbered us in the run. There were a number of guys in there.” Read more...
