Which SEC Powerhouse Will Land Gigantic 6'6", 330-lb OT Cameron Robinson?
By (Featured Columnist) on September 20, 2012
Class of 2014 five-star offensive tackle Cameron Robinson
is a big-time prospect, both literally and figuratively, and it appears
as if he's got his sights set on two big-time SEC schools.
According to Charles Power of 247Sports, Robinson's top two features the Crimson Tide of Alabama and the LSU Tigers, and he's feeling pretty good about both programs:

Leon Halip/Getty Images
Alabama is the AP Poll's
current No. 1 team in the nation, and LSU is right behind at No. 2.
Last year they met up in the National Championship game, and this season
both programs have the same aspirations. The kicker is, those
aspirations are realistic, which goes to show you how good both programs
are.
The question here is not how good LSU and Alabama are though, the question is: Which of these two schools will attract the 6'6'', 320-pound junior from West Monroe, La.?
Rivals has Robinson at 6'6', 320 pounds, while his 247sports profile has him listed at 6'5.5", 330 pounds. I know we sweat the small stuff in the college football recruiting world so I wanted to point out the discrepancy. Either way, it appears as if Robinson has the size intangibles to be a star lineman for either school, but I digress.
Stacy Revere/Getty Images
Right off the bat I feel obliged to give the slight
advantage to the home-state school. LSU is obviously a huge national
power, so the chance to play for such big school, while staying in-state
has to be appealing. It would be much easier for Robinson's family and
friends to watch him play.
That said, the allure of playing for Nick Saban and the very realistic chance of winning a national championship may be too much for Les Miles and the Tigers to overcome, so that basically nullifies the "home field advantage." Saban is an incredible recruiter to begin with, but his on-field product at Alabama basically recruits itself.
With both
programs being so close, I expect this will come down to field. As a
2014 prospect, Robinson has all of this season and next to watch both of
his top schools compete against other schools and each other.
I'm going to go out on a limb here, but with the way Alabama has been playing as of late, and with how talented their roster and depth chart is moving into the future, I'm going to have to give them the edge over LSU.
I see the big five-star offensive lineman choosing the school that will provide him with the opportunity to win the most.
Right now that's Alabama, and until LSU can prove otherwise, I don't see that changing.

According to Charles Power of 247Sports, Robinson's top two features the Crimson Tide of Alabama and the LSU Tigers, and he's feeling pretty good about both programs:
Robinson’s top two has long been comprised of the nation’s top two ranked programs- Alabama and LSU. The five-star prospect notes that hasn’t changed and adds that he’s been impressed by both teams’ performances to date.Is it just me, or does everything nowadays seem to come down to these two SEC powerhouses?
“It’s LSU and Alabama, so that’s pretty much the same. Those are my top two. LSU and Bama are both very strong this year. Bama opened up with Michigan and I think my prediction was pretty dead on. I have the utmost respect for Michigan, but I thought the skill level and speed that Alabama has would be a little too much for them. LSU and Alabama have both looked amazing so far. They both look very impressive.”

Email him your comments or story ideas to DallasJ@Yahoo-Inc.com and follow him on Twitter. The past six recruiting classes have included 17 players from Louisiana ranked in the Rivals100; only four did not sign with LSU. In the class of 2014, Louisiana has two players ranked as five-stars and three others in the Rivals100 with four-star designations entering the spring period.
Louisiana has been a state on the rise in terms of top-tier talent as well as quality depth. The ability for LSU to lock up those players has pushed the program to the top of the SEC and into national title contention.
Rivals.com national analyst Mike Farrell said that while LSU is the only major program in the state, the team is not guaranteed to get kids.
| Cameron Robinson is one of two five-star prospects from Louisiana in the class of 2014. |
LSU recruiting coordinator Frank Wilson said steps taken by the staff are the reason for the success.
"Because of our early identification process and how we're recruiting, we're able to withstand the test of time," Wilson told Rivals.com
Wilson was the Rivals.com Recruiter of the Year for 2011 and said that the ability to close has been a reason for the why the team stays on top.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
It would be easier to list those who didn't to go LSU from the Rivals100 since the rankings began with the Class of 2002. Of the 10 players who did not end up staying home, four of them did so in 2002-03. Since the program has been revitalized under Nick Saban and then Les Miles, players are not as inclined to look elsewhere.
The two most comparable classes to this version are the class of 2011 and the class of 2007. Each year had multiple five-star players, as well as at least five members of the Rivals100.
The class of 2011 was headlined by La'El Collins at No. 6, Anthony Johnson at No. 17, and Jarvis Landry at No. 18 -- all three chose LSU. The four-stars in the group were Odell Beckham Jr. at No. 43, Kenny Hilliard at No. 63, and Greg Robinson at No. 90.
Robinson elected to go to Auburn the year after his teammate Trovon Reed also left Louisiana.
BREAKING DOWN THEIR GAMES
Leonard Fournette:
"He's everything you want. He's a complete young man. From the running
back position, he's something you don't see a lot now. He's a first-down
back who can run inside the tackles, he's a third-and-long back where
he zooms out and catches passes. Then he's that guy who on fourth-and-1
is a bruiser. He's very deceptive. He has 4.3 speed, he's 6-2, 225
pounds. He's a very humble young man, so all the accolades he has
received are definitely befitting of him. He's an extraordinary talent."
-- St. Augustine coach Cyril Crutchfield
Cameron Robinson:
"Robinson already has an NFL body and light, quick feet. He has all the
tools college coaches look for in an offensive tackle. I would like to
see him add a little more in the strength department, but he's right on
the verge of being ideal. He has so many positive things going for him
that it is hard not to find something new you like every time you watch
him play." -- Rivals.com Southwest analyst Jason Howell.
The rest of the class elected to stay with the in-state power. Chad Jones was the No. 14 player in the country and a five-star. DeAngelo Benton was at No. 41, Stefoin Francois at No. 63 and Drake Nevis at No. 93.
One of the few significant prospects to leave the state since 2006 was Janzen Jackson, who was scheduled to sign with LSU before flipping for Lane Kiffin and Tennessee in the class of 2009. Jackson was kicked off the Tennessee football team in 2011 and was cut by the New York Giants after signing as a free agent.
The class of 2013 had three players in the Rivals100 from Louisiana. All three signed with LSU.
"We were able to bring the guys we started with to the finish line," Wilson said. "Many of them committed to us a year ago."
WHO STANDS TO GAIN FROM THIS CLASS
Fournette is the top-ranked player at his position and the No. 3 player in the nation.
While coaches are not allowed to discuss players who are not signed, both Wilson and Miles have made what many believe to be veiled overtures to Fournette.
At his signing day press conference, Miles addressed the question about not taking a running back in this class with a description of a player the program would target.
| Five-star RB Leonard Fournette says he believes Les Miles was leaving the door open for him. |
"I take that as a compliment," he said. "I'm feeling the same way. They're waiting on me."
Robinson is the top-ranked player at OT and the No. 7 overall player in the country.
He has said it is a two-horse race between LSU and Alabama.
"Both schools are almost identical, so I can't just point out one thing that one school does different than the other one," Robinson told Rivals.com.
Robinson added that neither school is rushing him to make a decision, and that is how he likes it.
The remaining players seem to be myopic about LSU.
Laurence Jones of Monroe (La.) Neville checks in at No. 25 in the Rivals100.
The 6-foot-2 safety has already been on campus in Baton Rouge and took his mother. He said that she will need to sign off on his decision and he has known only LSU football his whole life.
"Most likely she'll be the main reason I choose a college," Jones said. "Everybody says I'm a momma's boy."
Not disappointing mom might make it easy for LSU in the recruitment of the No. 42 player in the country, Gerald Willis III.
Willis is the younger half-brother of Landon Collins, who was one of the four players to leave the state when he chose Alabama in the class of 2012. His mother, April Justin, expressed her displeasure on national television.
"I feel LSU's a better place for him to be," Justin said. "LSU Tigers. No. 1. Go Tigers."
Willis said he is still open to any school, but he also admitted that LSU is likely the leader.
| Like many Louisiana products, Gerald Willis III admits LSU has a pull for him. |
He also acknowleged LSU plays a major factor.
"I like them, of course," he said. "But I am going to take my time and see some other schools."
Dupre and his teammate Kenny Young, a Rivals250 linebacker, went to UCLA for an unofficial visit and each returned with an offer and a strong impression.
Farrell believes that this group of players could all end up at LSU and that this class may have the makings of the class of 2011, which had six players from the state inside the Rivals100, five of whom chose to sign with LSU.
"When it is a good year in Louisiana, it is just assumed that LSU is going to clean up," Farrell said. "The class of 2011 was really good and could give LSU a real chance at a national championship run.
"I think that if this class all comes together, then we will be talking about it in a couple years as another group that can challenge for the national title."

3-point stance: Texas to use hurry-up
February, 22, 2013
By
Mark Schlabach | ESPN.c
1. The eyes of Texas will be on the Longhorns' revamped offense this spring. Texas opened spring practice Thursday, and coach Mack Brown and offensive coordinator Major Applewhite are promising big changes for a unit that has struggled the past few seasons. Applewhite plans to employ a hurry-up attack, which will utilize fewer personnel packages than former offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin employed. Brown said he would like to see Texas snap the ball around 85 times a game this coming season; UT averaged 68.5 snaps per game in 2012. Brown also wants quarterback David Ash to make more plays with his legs.
2. Count Brown among the FBS head coaches who are concerned about a proposed rule change that would eject players who deliver a hit to the head of a defenseless player. The proposal was unanimously approved by the NCAA Football Rules Committee earlier on Feb. 13, but still has to be approved by the Playing Rules Oversight Panel next month. If the penalty occurs in the first half of a game, the player would be ejected for the remainder of the game and the first half of the next game. Under the proposed rule, officials can use replay to determine whether the hit was intentional or not. "That's a very, very serious penalty, and it's one that coaches are concerned about and that we are going to have to some consistency in calling it or it could really disrupt some players’ lives," Brown said.
3. High school football coaches might end up being the biggest winners in the recent recruiting rules changes approved by the NCAA's Board of Directors. Proposal 11-2, which was approved by the NCAA Board of Directors earlier this month, allows FBS programs to hire a recruiting coordinator and support staff separate from their on-field coaching staff, which will be permitted to participate in all recruiting activities except off-campus visits. New Auburn coach Gus Malzahn has already hired two high school coaches to help the Tigers in recruiting: Chip Lindsey from Spain Park High School in Hoover, Ala., and Dell McGee of Carver High School in Columbus, Ga. FBS coaches around the country might target high school coaches in talent-rich areas in hopes of getting a leg up in recruiting.

Sources: Big East, ESPN close to deal
February, 21, 2013
By
Matt Fortuna | ESPN.co
The Big East and ESPN are finalizing a seven-year media rights deal worth $130 million through the 2019-2020 school year, league sources told ESPN's Brett McMurphy.
Last
week, the Big East received an official offer from NBC Sports Network,
but since ESPN is currently the primary rights holder it had one week to
match NBC's offer to retain the Big East's rights.
ESPN matched the financial aspect, sources said. However, Big East commissioner Mike Aresco must be satisfied ESPN's deal matches NBC Sports Network's offer in all facets. Once that is concluded, the Big East presidents must approve the new deal. They could vote on accepting the deal as early as this weekend, sources said.
ESPN's deal with the Big East includes seven years for men's basketball (2013-20) and six years for football (2014-20). The deal breaks down to $10 million for the 2013-14 basketball season and $20 million starting in 2014-15 for football and men's basketball, sources said.
ESPN's package includes annually broadcasting 65 football games, 150-plus basketball games, a conference football championship game and the Big East men's basketball tournament on ESPN's family of networks, sources said.
The Big East's current basketball media rights deal with ESPN and CBS expires after the 2012-13 academic year, while the football deal with ESPN will expire after the 2013-14 academic year. The new deal will "sync" both sports through the 2019-2020 academic year.
Sources said CBS will also extend its men's basketball rights with the Big East, paying the league about an additional $2 million annually.
That will bring the Big East's total media rights value to about $22 million annually, starting in 2014 and, based on a 12-team league, worth about $1.8 million per school annually.

Dandy Don's LSU Sports Report
Whoa! How about that LSU baseball team? Trailing 5-4, the Tigers rallied for two runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to defeat BYU 6-5 in a great ballgame. The rally started with a solo home run by Christian Ibarra with one out to tie the game at five, and continued with a walk to Chris Sciambra and singles by Mark Laird and Alex Bregman to load the bases. Raph Rhymes came through with a walk-off single deep to left field to clinch the win.
LSU had taken an early 1-0 lead in the second inning with a solo home run from Mason Katz, his first of the season. BYU quickly answered in the third with four runs of their own to make it 4-1. The four runs included a three-run homer off of Aaron Nola by centerfielder Jaycob Brugman. The Tigers pulled to within one in the bottom of the third with a two-RBI double by JaCoby Jones to make it 4-3, and in the bottom of the seventh Bregman’s high fly ball to shallow right fell just inside the foul line to tie the game at 4-4. BYU would rebound again and regain the lead in the top of the eighth. Right-hander Joey Bourgeois (1-0), who was credited with the win, struck out the side in the top of the ninth, propelling the Tigers to the ninth-inning magic.
LSU starting pitcher Aaron Nola had a rough third inning in which he gave up four runs, but ended the night with six strike outs in six innings of work. Will LaMarch, Hunter Devall and Joey Bourgeois combined for three innings in relief.
LSU was led at the plate by outfielder Mark Laird who had another solid night going 4-for-5. Ibarra finished 2-for-3 including the game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth. Alex Bregman continued to impress at the plate with two hits in five at-bats, as did Jacoby Jones who went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
The Tigers will return to the field today as they take on Southeastern Louisiana (3-1) at 7 p.m. at the Box. The game will be televised by Cox Sports Television and can be heard on the LSU Sports Radio Network affiliates (98.1 FM in Baton Rouge).
In less than three weeks, the LSU football team will begin spring practice. The Tigers will practice 14 times, including two scrimmages, before concluding the spring session with the annual National L-Club Game on April 20. Although I have not heard this officially, there are rumblings of the Spring Game being held at night this year. I sure hope that's the case. There's nothing like a Saturday night in Tiger Stadium, for the players, the fans, and the visiting recruits. With the state of Louisiana being loaded with high school talent this year, and with the excitement of Cam Cameron being hired as offensive coordinator, the spring practice session and Spring Game could be an especially exciting time in recruiting.

The meaning of a Tiger (Posted on 2/22/13 at 2:09 a.m.)
I wasn't raised a LSU fan. I came to LSU in spite of my parents who were from Arkansas and expected me to go to U of A.
My whole family are Hog fans and over the years I have been to 50+ Arky games from diapers to senior year in high school. After coming to LSU and touring other places, let me say there is nothing like being a LSU tiger -- the passion, culture, and pride in this state is something words can't grasp. After being here 3 years, words cant describe the love I have for LSU. Moving to Louisiana has taught me many things about myself and one is that the simple things in life are why we're here on this earth.
I will live in this state the rest of my life and after graduating from LSU i hope to bring something positive back to this great state. I'm proud to say I'm apart of Louisiana and I know we all disagree on many topics and stuff but in the end we all scream...
