“Defensively

Tinker:

I like the words from Bruno Mars song "Locked Out of Heaven,"To express the feeling that happens when LSU is playing great defense down in tiger Stadium. If they can't score they can't win?

Tigers to take week off for Spring Break before returning to practice

BATON ROUGE - Quarterback Zach Mettenberger had another big day, completing 21-of-35 passes for 247 yards and a touchdown, while Jermauria Rasco had five tackles, including three sacks, as LSU wrapped up its third week of spring practice with a scrimmage on Thursday afternoon in Tiger Stadium.

LSU, now nine practices into spring drills, will take next week off for spring break before returning for its final six workouts on April 7. The annual National L Club Spring Game is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 20 in Tiger Stadium. Admission is free to the spring game.

“I think our team is making improvement,” head coach Les Miles said following the scrimmage. “We were sloppy at times on the offensive side of the ball. The offense is really much improved it’s just that they’re shooting themselves in the foot and they have to understand that we are not going to play football that way.

“Again, the offense is much improved, but we just have to eliminate those fundamental things. I think we have talented players who can make big plays. the quarterback is throwing the ball better, but we have to improve on the little things.”

Miles said Thursday’s scrimmage featured a lot of third down situations as well as the 2-minute drill. LSU also spent time on all phases of the kicking, game.

Some of the things that Miles said the Tigers have to correct on offense include penalties, the center-quarterback exchange and protecting the football. Miles noted that the offense scored four touchdowns on the day, including twice against the No. 1 defense.

Other offensive standouts for the Tigers included running back Kenny Hilliard, who led all rushers with 90 yards on 20 carries.  Terrence Magee added 76 rushing yards, including an 11-yard TD run, on seven attempts, while Jeremy Hill had 60 yards on 13 carries. Alfred Blue was again held out as he continues to work his way back onto the field after suffering a season-ending injury last fall.

For the second straight scrimmage, Jarvis Landry led all receivers with seven catches for 77 yards, which included a 7-yard TD reception from Mettenberger, Landry also hauled in a 30-yard catch during the workout.

Freshman Avery Peterson followed with four receptions for 60 yards; Dillon Gordon had four catches for 40 yards and Odell Beckham, Jr. added a pair of receptions for 30 yards.

Other quarterbacks who saw action during the scrimmage included sophomore Stephen Rivers, who completed 3-of-9 passes for 30 yards and Anthony Jennings, who connected on 4-of-9 passes for 18 yards. In all, LSU threw for 295 yards and added another 238 yards on the ground.

Defensively, Rasco had his best outing of the spring with five tackles, three of which were sacks. Two of Rasco’s sacks came during the 2-minute drill against the No. 1 offense. Rasco’s final sack of the day came on fourth-and-long and would have ended the contest had it been a real game.

“Rasco had a nice day,” Miles said “He continues to improve with every practice. It looked like (Craig) Loston had a nice day as well. He made some big plays for that defense.

“Defensively, I thought we improved. The defense lined up and did the right things.”

Other defensive leaders for LSU included Loston with four tackles, including one tackle for loss; linebacker Lamin Barrow with four tackles and a fumble recovery, linebacker D.J. Welter with three tackles and freshman defensive tackle Christian LaCouture with four tackles.
