Tail of the tape does not a tiger make, because true LSU tigers are made from deep spirited feeling passed on from generations.

Tinker:

I can just about hear the sounds coming from LSU Tiger Stadium now, even in the moments before early spring the fierce competition displayed down on the spring training football practice field is the excitement that generations of Americans have felt for over 100 years now. From the meager beginning that came from the country neighborhood or city playgrounds American football is a game that keeps thrilling the crowds of people over and over again.

How do you tell other people about how much fun LSU fans have watching the LSU fighting tigers play college football in LSU tiger stadium. Sometimes when the bounce of the ball goes just right, it seem like everything?

BATON ROUGE – Quarterback Zach Mettenberger had another big day, completing 21-of-35 passes for 247 yards and a touchdown, while Jermauria Rasco had five tackles, including three sacks, as LSU wrapped up its third week of spring practice with a scrimmage on Thursday afternoon in Tiger Stadium.

LSU, now nine practices into spring drills, will take next week off for spring break before returning for its final six workouts on April 7. The annual National L Club Spring Game is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 20 in Tiger Stadium. Admission is free to the spring game.

“I think our team is making improvement,” head coach Les Miles said following the scrimmage. “We were sloppy at times on the offensive side of the ball. The offense is really much improved it’s just that they’re shooting themselves in the foot and they have to understand that we are not going to play football that way.

“Again, the offense is much improved, but we just have to eliminate those fundamental things. I think we have talented players who can make big plays. the quarterback is throwing the ball better, but we have to improve on the little things.”

Miles said Thursday’s scrimmage featured a lot of third down situations as well as the 2-minute drill. LSU also spent time on all phases of the kicking, game.

Some of the things that Miles said the Tigers have to correct on offense include penalties, the center-quarterback exchange and protecting the football. Miles noted that the offense scored four touchdowns on the day, including twice against the No. 1 defense.

Other offensive standouts for the Tigers included running back Kenny Hilliard, who led all rushers with 90 yards on 20 carries.  Terrence Magee added 76 rushing yards, including an 11-yard TD run, on seven attempts, while Jeremy Hill had 60 yards on 13 carries. Alfred Blue was again held out as he continues to work his way back onto the field after suffering a season-ending injury last fall.

For the second straight scrimmage, Jarvis Landry led all receivers with seven catches for 77 yards, which included a 7-yard TD reception from Mettenberger, Landry also hauled in a 30-yard catch during the workout.

Freshman Avery Peterson followed with four receptions for 60 yards; Dillon Gordon had four catches for 40 yards and Odell Beckham, Jr. added a pair of receptions for 30 yards.

Other quarterbacks who saw action during the scrimmage included sophomore Stephen Rivers, who completed 3-of-9 passes for 30 yards and Anthony Jennings, who connected on 4-of-9 passes for 18 yards. In all, LSU threw for 295 yards and added another 238 yards on the ground.

Defensively, Rasco had his best outing of the spring with five tackles, three of which were sacks. Two of Rasco’s sacks came during the 2-minute drill against the No. 1 offense. Rasco’s final sack of the day came on fourth-and-long and would have ended the contest had it been a real game.

“Rasco had a nice day,” Miles said “He continues to improve with every practice. It looked like (Craig) Loston had a nice day as well. He made some big plays for that defense.

“Defensively, I thought we improved. The defense lined up and did the right things.”

Other defensive leaders for LSU included Loston with four tackles, including one tackle for loss; linebacker Lamin Barrow with four tackles and a fumble recovery, linebacker D.J. Welter with three tackles and freshman defensive tackle Christian LaCouture with four tackles.

Stock Report: LSU Pro Day

Which Tigers benefited most from Wednesday’s workouts?

By CODY WORSHAM
Tiger Rag Editor

It doesn’t seem that long ago that Eric Reid, Tharold Simon, and Tyrann Mathieu were freshmen at the 2011 Cotton Bowl flashing NFL potential.

But here it is, more than two years later, and all three of those guys are on the verge of realizing those bright futures.

Those three joined 23 of their former teammates Wednesday at LSU’s annual Pro Day event, working out in front of the media and representatives of all 32 NFL teams, as well as a national audience watching on ESPN3.

Of those 23, several stood out most, including a few guys who were not invited to the NFL Combine earlier this month and needed to put their best foot forward.

Here are the biggest winners from LSU’s Pro Day.

1. Tharold Simon

Of the LSU juniors who declared early for this year’s draft, Simon is considered by many to be the rawest. The 6′2 corner had shown flashes of NFL ability, but his time at LSU was anything but steady, with those flashes sprinkled in with droughts of inconsistency.

But Simon, one of those who was invited to the NFL Combine, was ready to work on Wednesday. He officially ran a 4.5 40, with some reports moving that speed up to a 4.39 40. Simon also impressed in individual drills, showing great quickness and instinct.

Teams will already love Simon’s size on the outside, so his clocking in at 4.39 — even if it was unofficial — could cause him to move up the board. I could see Simon going as high as the third round of the draft, and I can’t see him falling outside of the fourth.

2. Russell Shepard

Shepard’s stock is up, but mostly because he didn’t have much — if any — before showing up for Pro Day.

There’s no need to rehash Shepard’s collegiate career, but after never settling into a position for LSU, he’s reaching to make an NFL roster at a variety of spots.

That’s why Shepard worked out with not just the wide receivers, but also the defensive backs during yesterday’s session.

Let’s be clear: Shepard is not an NFL-ready defensive back. His technique is non-existent, as you would expect of someone who’s never played the position. Shepard really only worked there because, as he said yesterday, around five or six NFL teams asked it of him.

Even Shepard’s individual drills left some to be desired. His hands are not soft enough to play receiver at the next level, at least not yet. His route running is actually pretty good, though, and of course he’s as shifty and explosive as any athlete not named Tavon Austin that’s on the board.

Shepard did run a 4.5 40 — a pretty nice time — and his shuttle and cone drill times were acceptable. But where Shepard made the most ground yesterday was just getting his name out there and showing a willingness to do anything to get into the league.

I still don’t see Shepard going in the draft, but as we all know, it only takes one team.

3. Kevin Minter

The only real question about Minter going into the draft has been his speed. While not a necessity at the middle linebacker position, elite speed is something all NFL scouts look for, and Minter’s 4.8 40 at the NFL Combine left some feeling as if he were more of a late second, early third round type of prospect.

Then Minter posted a 4.67 40 yesterday, putting to rest questions of his speed. That’s a very good time for a middle linebacker, and it puts Minter back in the first round discussion.

Baltimore at pick 32 remains an intriguing possibility, as they need to replace Hall of Famer Ray Lewis in the middle. Minter has the instinct and tackling skills to play immediately in the league, and with a new 40 in his back pocket, it appears he has the speed, too.

4. Chris Faulk

All Chris Faulk did on Wednesday was go through individual drills, after just doing the bench press at the NFL Combine.

That’s really all Faulk needed to do though, showing he can still move his feet coming off multiple knee surgeries.

Faulk looked something short of 100 percent during those drills. He changed direction well on that bad knee, but his push off was still not where it needs to be.

But that’s just fine. Faulk simply needed to show that his knee is improving, and he did just that.

At full health, Faulk is a first round type of talent, and while he won’t fall there this year, a team could take a chance on him in the second or third if it feels his knee is on pace for full health.

All signs point that way, and if Faulk’s knee keeps healing, he could end up not just getting drafted, but starting for a team in need of a left tackle — Saints, anyone? —  come the 2013 season.

Dandy Don's LSU Sports Report

In other football news, LSU will hold its second scrimmage of the spring today and then will enjoy spring break until April 8. Today's scrimmage is closed to the media, so I won't be driving out to Baton Rouge to take notes and shoot video as I have for the last two Thursdays, but I hope to have some stats for you in the morning from today post-scrimmage press conference.

As was the case last week, there will be several prospects attending tomorrow's scrimmage. One prospect who arrived at LSU yesterday is wide receiver Saeed Blacknell (6'2", 190) of Englishtown, New Jersey. You may recall that Backnell is the receiver that LSU offered a few weeks ago. With so many outstanding wide receivers on my list of Top LA Football Prospects for the Class of 2014, it would be easy to question why LSU is looking out of state to fill their needs at the position, but when you see his highlight video, and consider that he's 6-3 and runs a 4.4 forty, it's easy to see why LSU chose to recruit him in spite of the 1,326 miles between his home and Tiger Stadium. I presume that since Blacknell travelled so far to get to LSU that he probably will stay long enough to attend today's scrimmage. Another prospect who will be visiting today is Kendell Ardoin (TE/WR, 6'6", 202) of Ville Platte, No. 31 on my list. According to his coach, Ardoin has seen his recruitment really pick up lately and is getting attention from Mississippi State, Texas A&M, Georgia and others. If any recruiting news breaks, I'll be sure to let those of you who follow DandyDonLSU on Twitter know as soon as I do, and I'll post it here as well.
